Wolf hoops teams take different paths

One team is done, one plays on.

The Coupeville High School boys basketball squad reached the end of the road Saturday, falling a game shy of a playoff berth.

But dreams of postseason glory are still alive for the Wolf girls, who open the double-elimination district tourney Monday at Lynden Christian.

As they exit, a look at the final scoring totals for the CHS boys reveals several things.

The Wolves got three guys into triple digits this time around, after settling for two last year.

But, at the same time, scoring was down, with 158 points from the team’s top scorer being the lowest total by a squad leader since the 2012-2013 season.

Closing on a positive note, that leading scorer was freshman Hawthorne Wolfe, who was the highest-scoring 9th grader in 102 years of Coupeville boys basketball.

Only four other CHS boys, and five girls, have topped 100 varsity points during their freshmen season, and eight of those nine went on to finish their careers in the top 10 for career scorers.

So, based on history, and Wolfe’s own strong work ethic, we can reasonably expect his point totals to trend upwards in the coming years.

Over on the girls side of the ball, seniors Lindsey Roberts and Ema Smith continue to chase individual achievement alongside team glory.

Roberts passed three former Wolf greats in her last game, and now sits at #20 on the girls career scoring chart, while Smith is just four points from cracking the top 50.

As we leave the regular season behind and head into the playoffs, a look at where we are, through Feb. 3:

One week to decide fate of the hoops universe

Five days from now, everything will be settled.

Maybe.

Friday, Feb. 1 is the final night of the regular season for high school basketball, but it might not be the absolute cut-off.

While the Coupeville girls know exactly what their postseason route will be, having clinched the #3 seed from the North Sound Conference, the fate of the Wolf boys is still up in the air.

Brad Sherman’s squad holds a one-game lead on Granite Falls in the chase for the #5 playoff spot on the boys side, but the week ahead looms large.

The Wolves travel to South Whidbey Tuesday, while Granite hosts Cedar Park Christian the same night.

Then comes the regular season finale Friday, with CHS on the bus to visit Granite.

A Coupeville win Tuesday would likely clinch a playoff berth, while one Friday will absolutely achieve that goal.

However, if Granite wins both games next week, and the Wolves lose both, there’s no postseason bid for Whidbey’s team.

And then there’s our final scenario, with a Granite win over Coupeville Friday leaving both schools with the same record in league play, having split the season series.

If that happens, the Tigers have to get on the bus and travel to Cow Town Saturday, Feb. 2 for a play-in game for the final postseason slot in the double-elimination district tourney.

Tip-off would be 5 PM in the CHS gym.

While the Wolf boys sweat out their fate, their female counterparts will host King’s Tuesday, then travel to Granite Friday, all while knowing they open districts Feb. 4 against Meridian.

Not that there’s nothing left to play for, as the CHS girls need another victory to clinch a winning record in league play, while seniors Lindsey Roberts and Ema Smith chase individual scoring marks.

With 418 career points, Roberts is just eight shy of passing Cassidi Rosenkrance (423), Mika Hosek (424), and Sarah Powell (425) to become the #20 scorer in Wolf girls hoops history.

Meanwhile, Smith is a single point shy of becoming the 55th CHS girl to record 200 points, and needs 18 to pass Beth Mouw and Lisa Roehl (216) for 50th place all-time.

As we head into the final week of the regular season, a look at where we are, through Jan. 27:

Hoops teams jockey for playoff positioning

One team is in, one team is still fighting.

Coupeville High School’s varsity basketball teams are in different spots in the standings, but both have their eyes firmly set on the playoffs.

The Wolf girls swept a pair of games this past week, rising back into a tie for second-place in the six-team North Sound Conference, while also clinching a postseason berth.

Meanwhile, the young CHS boys put together their best performance of the season Friday, pushing South Whidbey hard into the fourth quarter.

While they came away with a loss, their second of the week, the Wolf boys still control the battle for the fifth, and final, playoff bid.

A game and a half up on Granite Falls, which it beat the first time around, Coupeville has four games left on the schedule as it looks to KO the Tigers from the playoff race.

This coming week, the Wolf boys play their final regular-season home games, hosting King’s Tuesday and Cedar Park Christian Friday night.

The CHS girls, who have played a game more than their male counterparts, play just once, tangling with CPC at home Friday as the opener in a doubleheader.

As we head into the next-to-last week of the regular season, a look at where we are, through Jan. 20:

Wolves primed for playoff push

If the playoffs started today, both Coupeville High School varsity hoops teams would be postseason-bound.

That being said, there’s still a lot of games to played over the next three weeks.

The Wolf girls, who are solidly camped in third-place in the six-team North Sound Conference, have five games left on their regular-season schedule.

Meanwhile, the CHS boys, who are hanging onto the fifth and final playoff berth right now, still have six more rumbles.

Both teams play twice this coming week, with three of the four games live in the Coupeville gym.

The girls kick off a four-game home-stand Tuesday against Granite Falls, then go for the season sweep of South Whidbey Friday night.

Coupeville’s boys will be back on the bus Tuesday, traveling to Bothell to face Cedar Park Christian.

After that, they also return to Whidbey, with a Friday match-up against their next door neighbors a biggie.

As we head into a new week, with the fate of teams starting to be decided, a look at where we are, through Jan. 13:

Every coach and commentator and fan and player says the same thing – basketball is about more than just scoring.

And, it’s sort of true, until it isn’t, cause the only way you win a game is by having more points on the scoreboard than the other team.

The people doing the dirty work in the trenches — rebounding, scrapping for loose balls, setting picks with authority — are super important.

In that they set up people making baskets.

Which is why we tend to remember the players and teams who scored the most. Since they tend to be the most successful.

When you look back at the history of Coupeville High School basketball, there is no question as to the greatest offense to ever hit the hardwood.

It’s the 1969-1970 Wolf boys, who torched the nets for 1,836 points, without the help of the three-point shot.

No other CHS team, boys or girls, has come close to toppling that mark in the past 50 years, and, like Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak, it’s as close to an unbeatable record as we have.

I’ve written my fair share of stories about the 69-70 team, which was led by Jeff Stone, whose 644 points in 24 games remains the gold standard for not just Coupeville, but all of Whidbey Island.

But I just realized if you asked me which Wolf girls team was the best offensive machine in school history, I couldn’t tell you that off the top of my head.

So, off I scampered to my records, and, after scanning from 1974 to 2019, I found my answer, and I can’t say it’s much of a surprise.

The 2001-2002 CHS girls won a league title, then advanced to the state semifinals before finishing 6th – best finish in program history – and featured a mix of stars from top to bottom.

It’s the only Wolf girls team in school history to have six different players top 100 points during the same season, a feat Coupeville boys have accomplished 12 times in 101 seasons, most recently in 2009-2010.

So, as we continue to wade through the 45th season of CHS girls hoops, here’s the top five scoring teams all-time:
