Their swan song was a sweet one.

A week after a mud-encrusted triple-overtime loss to Friday Harbor ended its playoff hopes, the Coupeville High School football team wrote a better ending Thursday night in Burien.

Facing off with Evergreen (Seattle), a 2A Kingco school, the 2B Wolves punched upwards and threw some haymakers in a 28-13 win.

The non-conference victory raises Coupeville’s final record to 3-5 and sends seniors Brian Casey and Isaiah Bittner out on a high note.

While the Wolves had a sizable disadvantage in terms of bodies, with Evergreen’s roster sporting 50 names to Coupeville’s 20 or so players, that didn’t dictate Thursday’s result.

“They were a bigger team roster and size wise, but we were the more physical team,” said CHS coach Marcus Carr.

The game was won on the ground, with CHS taking a 14-13 lead into the halftime break, then stretching the margin out in the second half.

Jonathan Valenzuela punched in a touchdown for the Wolves, his second score of the season.

The headliner, however, was junior Scott Hilborn, who hit pay-dirt three times, notching his 10th, 11th, and 12th touchdowns.

Those 12 scores, tallied across eight games, are the third-most scored by a Wolf in a single season during the Coupeville Sports era, which runs from 2012 to today.

Hilborn trails just Josh Bayne (25 in 2014) and Hunter Smith (14 in 2016), who both had 10 games to work with.

Cameron Breaux and Logan Downes rounded out Thursday’s scoring effort, with both Wolves breaking the line on successful two-point conversion attempts.

Breaux was the tenth Coupeville player to score during a season when the team tallied 190 points, which breaks down to a tidy 23.75 per game.

Dominic Coffman has reached the end zone five times during his junior season.

Is this the end?

We’re not sure, to be honest.

Thursday’s Senior Night game against Friday Harbor was the final one on the original schedule for the Coupeville High School football team.

But, now that the Wolves know they won’t be playoff-bound, there’s a chance CHS will pick up one more game against another school on the outside looking in.

As we wait for the scheduling dance to play out in the office of Coupeville Athletic Director Willie Smith, we can take a look at the team’s scoring stats.

Might be final. Might not be. Only time will tell.

Furious tackles. A few raindrops. And a lot of clicking cameras.

The end zone calls.

Coupeville High School running back Scott Hilborn has scored eight touchdowns across his team’s first five games this season, which puts him in good company.

The junior, who’s also had multiple scores called back thanks to penalties by his teammates, is the sixth Wolf to score that often during the Coupeville Sports era, which runs from 2012-2021.

Josh Bayne tops that chart, bashing his way to 25 TD’s in 2014, with 15 on the ground, and 10 through the air.

And yet he doesn’t hold the school’s single-season record for rushing or receiving touchdowns, as Ian Barron (16) and Hunter Smith (11) do.

Hilborn, who has regular-season home games against Cascade (Leavenworth) and Friday Harbor left on the schedule, is on the cusp of moving up on the scoring list.

Here who he’s chasing from the last decade:

Josh Bayne (25 TDs) – 2014
Hunter Smith (14) – 2016
Sean Toomey-Stout (10) – 2018
Jake Tumblin (10) – 2012
Bryce Fleming (9) – 2012
Jake Tumblin (9) – 2013

Fall 2021 scoring stats (5 games):

Touchdowns:

Scott Hilborn – 8
Dominic Coffman – 5
Logan Downes – 2
Daylon Houston – 2
Tim Ursu – 2
Cole Hutchinson – 1
Johnny Porter – 1
Jonathan Valenzuela — 1

Coupeville football crunched La Conner for a second time this season, winning 40-0 Friday night. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Back on the field, back in the win column.

A week after cancelling a game due to a lack of healthy players, the Coupeville High School football team travelled to La Conner Friday and blitzed the winless Braves for a second time this season.

Pounding away on the ground, the Wolves ran away with a 40-0 win, keeping alive hopes of sharing the Northwest 2B/1B League title.

Coupeville sits at 2-1 in conference action, 2-3 overall, a half game back of Friday Harbor (2-0, 3-4), and two up on La Conner (0-3, 0-4).

While the Wolves play non-conference foe Cascade (Leavenworth) Oct. 22 during Coupeville’s Homecoming game, La Conner will travel to Friday Harbor that night.

CHS then wraps its regular season Thursday, Oct. 28, when it hosts Friday Harbor in what should be a showdown between teams with league marks of 2-1 and 3-0, respectively.

Win that finale, and Coupeville shares the crown with the Wolverines.

Friday’s clash in La Conner was much like the first time the two schools met in late September, when Coupeville waxed the Braves 51-0 at Mickey Clark Field.

The Wolves moved the ball with ease, scored with ease, and never allowed La Conner to get much of anything going.

Forcing and recovering fumbles on the first two Braves possessions, Coupeville didn’t allow their foes to get a first down until the final minute of the opening quarter.

And that only happened because of a questionable face mask call on the Wolves.

Overall, La Conner spent most of the first half on its own side of the field, rarely generating positive yardage on consecutive plays.

CHS, which also had two first-half interceptions, including a pick-six from Daylon Houston, added to a season in which La Conner, a traditional heavyweight, has yet to score a point in four games.

The Braves are looking at a 175-0 deficit with two games remaining on their schedule.

By contrast, Coupeville’s offense quickly found its groove after a week off, punching in five touchdowns in the first half, with Scott Hilborn and Dominic Coffman each scoring twice on runs.

Jonathan Valenzuela added another run to pay dirt, before Houston, who also walloped four PAT tries through the uprights, picked La Conner’s QB off less than a minute before halftime.

The ball securely in his hands, Houston sliced ‘n diced his way downfield, taking the ball back 70+ yards to cap the first-half scoring.

With a running clock in place after the break, and Coupeville taking its foot off the gas pedal, the Wolves didn’t add to their already-impressive point total in the second half.

Valenzuela did pick off a La Conner pass in the third quarter, however, giving his squad five takeaways in the game.
