Big cuts, big stats!!

The bats are hummin’.

As it preps for Friday’s rivalry game with South Whidbey (4 PM in Cow Town), the Coupeville High School softball squad continues to pile up the offensive numbers.

The Wolves, who sit at 9-4 and shellacked the Falcons 12-0 the first time they played this season, are a well-oiled machine.

The big boppers — Katrina McGranahan, Sarah Wright and Veronica Crownover — are delivering in style, but CHS is also getting major contributions from young guns like Scout Smith, Chelsea Prescott and Emma Mathusek.

The latter, who hits out of the #9 hole, has torn the cover off the ball in the last week-and-a-half, running her batting average up to a sizzlin’ .360.

Sluggers fill up stat sheet!!

Everyone is playing a part.

11 of the 12 players to see varsity action for Coupeville High School softball have already gotten a hit, and 12 of 12 have scored at least one run.

With contributions coming from every player in uniform, it’s not a huge surprise the Wolves are off to another hot start, this time sitting at 5-1.

As CHS preps for a busy weekend (it hosts Meridian Friday and Forks Saturday, with Saturday being a doubleheader), a look at season-to-date stats, as recorded on MaxPreps.

The Gazelle is too fast for the stat-keepers.

We know super sophomore Maya Toomey-Stout has been tearing up the volleyball court for Coupeville High School this fall — she torched Chimacum for five service aces alone.

But she’s nowhere to be seen when you look at the CHS stat sheet on MaxPreps, which is a surprising (and probably completely accidental) oversight.

To make up for that, she gets to grace our first volleyball stats story with her picture.

We know you exist, Maya, even if MaxPreps tries to insist otherwise.

Bergeron made it rain (buckets)!!

Anthony Bergeron wasted no time.

In his first year as a varsity player, the Coupeville High School senior became the go-to scorer for the Wolves in 2013-2014.

Swooping to the hoop with a variety of silky-smooth moves, he twice broke 20 in a game (topping out with 23) and led CHS in scoring.

Six of the team’s 10 scorers, including three of the top five (Wiley Hesselgrave, Aaron Trumbull and Joel Walstad) were underclassmen, leaving behind a strong core as the Wolves make the transition from the 1A/2A Cascade Conference to the 1A Olympic League.

An entire season, compiled neatly into one graph.

That’s what looking at season-ending stats is like, though, of course, just viewing the numbers doesn’t begin to tell you the tale of the highs, the lows, the big moments, the triumphs and heartbreak that go into every year of basketball.

But we’re here to look at stats, and stats for the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball team, which won on a consistent basis in 2013-2014.

Twice they held opponents scoreless for an entire half (once they stretched that to three quarters) and the Wolves outscored their foes 456-454 this year (359-350 in Cascade Conference play).

Looking through the stats, some leaders pop out.

Kailey Kellner, despite joining the team late after moving to Whidbey from England, hit more three-point bombs (5) than the rest of her 14 teammates combined (4 — Emily Coulter hit two, while Skyler Lawrence and Mattea Miller each hit one).

Carlie Rosenkrance netted the most free throws (16), while Wynter Thorne and Jenn Spark had the best percentage at the line, each knocking down 67% of their shots.

When it came to playing rough and tumble, no one was more effective than defensive standout Lauren Grove. She was whistled for a team-high 33 fouls, edging out Tiffany Briscoe (29) and Kellner (23), but that’s because:

A) She was always on top of the ball and frequently made off with steals, kick-starting the Wolf offense

and

B) The refs are blind.

All 15 girls to pull on the red and black scored this year, which is always one of Wolf JV coach Amy King’s goals.
