A local institution is changing owners after almost 70 years, but otherwise, things are expected to remain virtually the same.

Seattle Pacific University publicly announced Friday it entered a purchase and sale agreement with the YMCA of Snohomish County in September to sell the Camp Casey Conference Center and Fort Casey Inn.

The change becomes effective Jan. 1, 2025.

SPU has owned the property since purchasing it in 1956.

Camp Casey served “as an extension of Seattle Pacific’s educational mission and character formation through hosting classes and retreats as well as serving external groups like sport camps, churches, (and) educational groups,” SPU officials said in a statement,

As part of the announcement, SPU also released a FAQ list covering topics such as whether current reservations will be honored, what happens to the Camp Casey staff, and why the sale was made.

One last time in the boat with her girls.

Coupeville grad Lucy Sandahl capped her collegiate rowing career Saturday, operating as the coxswain for Seattle Pacific University’s 8+ team as it competed at the NCAA D-II Championships in Ohio.

The Falcons raced three times in two days, vying in a heat and a repechage Friday, before rowing in the Petite Final on day two.

Meanwhile, SPU’s 4+ boat made off with a national title, winning their race Saturday.

Overall, the Falcons, who were making their third consecutive appearance at the national championships, finished 5th in the team standings.

Western Washington University claimed its ninth team title, and first since 2017.

Sandahl, who played volleyball and track and field during her CHS days, put together a stellar career during her run at SPU.

She was a three-time First-Team All-Academic pick, earning the honor in every year she was eligible, and became a driving force for the Falcons in her leadership position.

During her first three years in the Falcon program, Lucy was joined by big sis Sophie, who graduated in 2023.

Lucy Sandahl is returning to the big dance. Or, more appropriately, the big splash.

Seattle Pacific University was one of six schools chosen Tuesday to fill the field at the NCAA D-II Rowing Championship, which goes down May 31-June 1 in Bethel, Ohio.

The Falcons, with Coupeville grad Sandahl directing traffic in the 8+ boat, have been ranked in the top five nationwide all season.

SPU joins Cal Poly Humboldt, Central Oklahoma, Embry-Riddle (Florida), Mercyhurst, and Western Washington.

Cal Poly is defending champs, while Western Washington, which won seven consecutive titles between 2005-2011, is the winningest program in DII women’s rowing history.

Each school will send an 8+ boat and a 4+ boat, with racing done on East Fork/Harsha Lake.

Marietta College and the Cincinnati USA Sports Commission are hosts.

Sandahl, a standout volleyball and track athlete during her days in Coupeville, is a senior coxswain at SPU.

She was recently named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic team for a third time, making her a perfect three-for-three, as freshmen aren’t eligible for that honor.

It might have been her finale, but it also might not have been.

Coupeville grad Lucy Sandahl was directing traffic for the Seattle Pacific University 8+ boat Saturday at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Rowing Championships on Lake Notama in Gold River, California.

With the former Wolf calling the shots as the coxswain, the Falcons finished fourth in their race.

SPU also competed in the 4+ race, winning that one.

Now, Sandahl and company await the selection process for the NCAA D-II Championships, which go down May 31-June 1 in Bethel, Ohio.

The six-school field will be announced this coming Tuesday, May 21.

The Falcons are very likely to get a return trip to the big dance, as they’ve been ranked in the top five nationally all season.

Sandahl is a senior who was recently tabbed to her third-consecutive GNAC All-Academic team, keeping her perfect for her collegiate career.

Check out the big brain on Lucy Sandahl.

The Coupeville grad is capping her run as a senior coxswain with the Seattle Pacific University crew program, but still has time to hit the books.

Sandahl was one of 14 Falcons named Wednesday to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic team.

Currently pulling a 3.21 GPA in Physiology, she’s the only one on her squad to be a three-time All-Academic team honoree.

Since freshmen are not eligible for the team, that means Sandahl made it every season she was able to.

“We are so proud to have 14 individuals make the GNAC All-Academic team,” SPU coach Caitlin McClain said in a statement.

“Our seniors and juniors with multiple years of recognition show how the sport and the people produce excellence on the water and in the classroom.”

Sandahl and the Falcons will be back on the water this weekend, competing at the GNAC Championships Saturday in Gold River, California.
