Stuurmans slices ‘n dices in big win

She showed ’em how it’s done.

Playing Wednesday on “High School Night” — where teen players were given free admission — Coupeville grad Lyla Stuurmans sparked the Skagit Valley College volleyball squad to a straight-sets win.

The Cardinals, playing on their home floor in Mount Vernon, whacked visiting Green River 25-20, 25-17, 25-18, improving to 3-2 on the still-young season.

Right at the forefront was Stuurmans, a former CHS Athlete of the Year winner, who produced a team-high 13.5 points by racking up nine kills, two service aces, four digs, one solo block, and three block assists.

Through the first five matches of the year, the former Wolf supernova, now an SVC sophomore, has tallied 21 kills, two assists, 10 aces, 40 digs, four solo blocks, six block assists, and 38 points.

Skagit returns to action September 1, facing off with Columbia Basin in a match set to go down in the Pasco region.

Stuurmans and Co. will be on the road for quite a while.

The Cardinals have 12 matches scheduled for the month of September, but don’t play at home again until they host Shoreline on the 30th.

Wolf grads kick off college spiker season

The alumni are launching kills and aces once again.

Coupeville grads Lyla Stuurmans and Mia Farris kicked off their second season of college volleyball with a busy weekend on the courts.

Skagit Valley College and Whatcom College both played four matches to open the 2026 campaign, with two each on Friday and Saturday.

Stuurmans and SVC went 2-2 at the North Region Invite, knocking off Pierce and South Puget Sound, while being edged by Highline and Rogue.

Meanwhile, Whatcom College, sparked by Farris, also split its four tilts while playing the same opponents.

The Orcas bounced Rogue and Pierce but came up just short against SPS and Highline.

Farris, who has moved to the libero position as a sophomore, piled up a team-high 64 digs to go with 11 assists and four service aces across her opening weekend.

Stuurmans racked up eight kills, two assists, seven aces, 26 digs, three solo blocks, and one block assist during her games.

Both former Wolves return to action next week, with SVC playing next on August 26 while Whatcom hits the floor again on August 28.

Spiker sensation revs up for new campaign

She’s smart, she’s ferocious, and she’s back for more.

Coupeville grad Lyla Stuurmans, who was recently honored along with her Skagit Valley College teammates for their academic prowess, has kicked off season #2 of her collegiate volleyball career.

The photos above and below capture the former CHS Female Athlete of the Year winner during a recent media day for the Cardinals, who are busy preparing for the new campaign.

Stuurmans (far right, back row) and the Cardinal crew are ready to flex on fools.

SVC opens play August 21, with matches against Whatcom College, featuring Stuurmans former CHS teammate Mia Farris, slated for Oct. 7 and 30.

The first time around, Stuurmans played in 30 of 32 matches as a freshman, helping the Cardinals to a 17-15 record.

She piled up 175 kills, 73 digs, eight solo blocks, 41 block assists, and 21 service aces last season.

Stuurmans shares in academic honors

Lyla Stuurmans was part of a landmark team.

The Coupeville High School grad is heading into her sophomore season of playing volleyball at Skagit Valley College, but first the former Wolf and her fellow Cardinal spikers can bask in the afterglow of last year.

For the first time in program history, SVC volleyball earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award, which is given to squads who maintain a year-long 3.3 GPA or higher.

Stuurmans and crew finished the 2025-2026 academic year with a team GPA of 3.52, soaring well above the requirements.

While they were showcasing their big brains, the Cardinals also did well on the court, finishing 17-15.

Stuurmans played in 30 of 32 matches, racking up 175 kills, 73 digs, eight solo blocks, 41 block assists, and 21 service aces.

SVC kicks off its new season August 21, with matches against Whatcom College, which features former CHS star Mia Farris, set for Oct. 7 and 30.

Big hits, big brains.

Wolf grad impresses on college diamond

When she sees the field, she has a big impact.

Playing for a very-deep Edmonds College softball squad, Coupeville grad Madison McMillan has had to be patient during her freshman campaign, sharing duties at third base.

But when the former Wolf is in the lineup, she rakes.

Wednesday night was another example, as McMillan started in the first game of a doubleheader sweep against host Skagit Valley College, collecting two walks, a hit, a run, and an RBI in a 19-4 win mercy-ruled after five innings.

The nightcap went even faster, with the Tritons bouncing SVC 15-3 in just three innings as Coupeville’s progeny cheered on her teammates from the bench.

The sweep pushes Edmonds winning streak to 20 games, with the squad sitting at 20-1.

On the season, McMillan has played in 15 of 21 games, starting nine.

She’s hitting at a .429 clip — fifth-best on the team — with 11 runs, 12 hits, three doubles, two home runs, 15 RBI, and six walks.

McMillan’s stellar play at Edmonds follows on the heels of a superb four-year run at CHS, where she was a key player for Wolf volleyball, basketball, and softball teams, helping both the spikers and diamond women advance to the state tourney.

UPDATE:

McMillan actually smashed her third home run of the season, only to be officially denied by an extra-picky ump.

Flexing her muscles, she sent a shot which one fan noted was “to deep, deep center field … one of the longer home runs I’ve seen her hit.”

But…

After a 10-15 minute discussion between the umps, it was ruled McMillan “touched the orange safety bag, NOT the white first base bag when rounding to second,” which is an automatic out under Northwest Athletic Conference rules.

In the postgame shuffle, the home plate ump remarked it was “the farthest jack he has seen this year,” and Instagram gave her some props, even if the home run will never exist in the “official” stats.
