Time for the big payback.

After wrapping their regular season Tuesday with a hard-fought 4-0 loss to two-time 1A Olympic League champ Klahowya, the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad is postseason bound.

Their first opponent and possibly their second? Both familiar foes.

The Wolves (5-8-1) host Bellevue Christian (5-7-1) Thursday at Oak Harbor’s stadium (6 PM) in a loser-out district playoff game that offers a chance at redemption.

The two schools met in a non-conference game Mar. 30, and while the Vikings won 7-4 in Coupeville that day, the Wolves were playing without starting goaltender Connor McCormick.

The senior was serving a one-game suspension after receiving a red card in a game the day before for an inadvertent handball.

If Coupeville wins Thursday, they’ll advance on for another crack at revenge, with a road game Saturday at Kentridge High School against Vashon Island (8-2-4).

That’s the team the Wolves were playing when McCormick was ejected for preventing “an obvious chance to score,” when his hand connected with the ball as he was scrambling to get back in the goalie box with six minutes to play.

Backup goalies Jose Marcos and Tanner Kircher stepped in and held Vashon scoreless through the end of regulation and overtime as the two teams eventually accepted a 1-1 draw.

If Coupeville knocks off both Nisqually League teams, it advances to the double-elimination round of districts May 10-14. Two wins there would qualify them for state.

While CHS doesn’t charge admission for regular season soccer, the postseason is a different beast.

Prices for Thursday’s game at OHHS:

Adults and students without an ASB — $8

Middle school/high school students (with ASB) — $5

Elementary school students (under 12) — $4

Senior citizens (62 and over) — $5

Preschool (with parent) — free

The offense is clickin’.

The season is not over for the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad, but they have already amassed their most successful goal-scoring campaign in recent memory.

And it’s not even close.

With at least two more games on the schedule — the regular season finale at Klahowya Tuesday and a playoff game Thursday in Oak Harbor — the Wolves have tallied 46 goals this season.

They have also scored in every one of their 13 games this season, unheard of consistency for a program which had been shutout at least five times a season for five years running.

At the center of the attack has been senior Abraham Leyva, who broke his own school single-season scoring record.

After tallying 25 goals combined over his first two seasons at CHS (11 as a sophomore and 14 as a junior) Leyva has 20 this year, having scored in all but one game.

Here’s a look at how this year’s Wolves compare to the last five teams to suit up:

2016 — 46 goals in 13 games, zero shutouts (5-7-1 record)
2015 — 35 goals in 14 games, six shutouts (3-11-0)
2014 — 22 goals in 17 games, five shutouts (5-10-2)
2013 — 15 goals in 17 games, nine shutouts (3-14-0)
2012 — 27 goals in 18 games, six shutouts (10-8-0)
2011 — 30 goals in 17 games, seven shutouts (6-11-0)

Both the 2011 and 2012 teams won playoff games, the last times the CHS boys’ soccer squad triumphed in the postseason.

The ’11 team beat Meridian 3-0, then was nipped 2-1 by Seattle Christian, while the ’12 booters bopped Meridian 1-0 and were eliminated 1-0 by Cedar Park Christian (Bothell).

And a look at this year’s scoring chart:

Abraham Leyva — 20
Ethan Spark — 8
Zane Bundy — 5
William Nelson — 5
Zack Nall — 3
Andre Avila — 2
Sebastian Davis — 2
Cody Menges — 1

“And we’re outta here!”

The season’s not done, but you can’t stay here anymore.

The remainder of the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer season, whether it’s two games or whether it winds all the way to the state championship game, will be played entirely on the road.

Putting a final punctuation on their time running the CHS pitch, a pack of Wolf seniors sparked a huge win over Chimacum Saturday morning.

Before they did so, however, they stopped for a final bow, some words of wisdom, and a mix of hugs, tears and smiles from family and friends.

A whopping 13 seniors, including four-year manager Sebastian Wurzrainer, will depart after this season, one of the biggest groups ever to leave at one time.

As they go, we pause to say thank you and offer up this collection of snappy pics from the camera of Wendy McCormick, mom of goalie Connor.

With prom just hours away, the Wolves were already dancing Saturday morning.

Raining down goals from every direction — 10 of them in just the first-half alone — the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad had plenty of chances to skip, twirl, jump into each others arms and cavort across the pitch en route to an 11-4 thrashing of visiting Chimacum.

The lopsided win brought the Wolves to 2-3 in Olympic League play, 5-7-1 overall.

It also helped them clinch third-place in the four-team league (they could still tie Port Townsend record-wise, but the RedHawks own the tiebreaker) and punched their ticket to the playoffs.

Coupeville will play a “home” loser-out game Thursday, May 5 at Oak Harbor High School’s stadium against the #4 team from the Nisqually League (either Bellevue Christian or Seattle Christian).

Win there and they hit the road to play Vashon Island May 7 in another loser-out district game.

Taking advantage of a Cowboy squad that had the minimum 11 players in uniform, none of whom were especially sharp on defense, the Wolves jumped on the board early.

Sophomore Ethan Spark punched in a shot from the right side in the game’s 6th minute, then deflected in another ball less than five minutes later.

Next up was senior scoring leader Abraham Leyva, who notched goals #19 and #20 of the season, with a header and then a spectacular shot on which he slid towards the goalie, before flicking the ball up and over his shoulder.

After that it was a virtual parade of goals, with Zack Nall, Zane Bundy, Andre Avila and William Nelson all finding the back of the net.

In between their scores, Spark, who was having himself quite a day stealing the spotlight on Senior Night, banged home two more goals.

His four scores on the afternoon doubled his season output, broke a tie with Bundy and Nelson, who each have five this season, and made mom Kali Barrio scream at an octave previously not heard.

With the game well in hand, CHS coach Kyle Nelson did his best to keep things competitive while not overly embarrassing Chimacum by either piling on more goals or merely playing keep-away.

With freshman Brian Roberts making his varsity debut in goal, senior Connor McCormick moved out of the net and played up front in the second half, as did some defenders like Cody Menges.

With a mandate that any second-half goals had to be set up by a crossing shot, Coupeville added a final score when Leyva set the ball up perfectly for Menges to knock home.

The game was the final one on the CHS pitch for seniors Jose Marcos, Bundy, Leyva, Menges, Avila, Taylor Chiles, McCormick and Loren Nelson.

Fellow seniors Sebastian Davis, Tanner Kircher, Garrett Compton and Beauman Davis were all out for various reasons, but they and senior manager Sebastian Wurzrainer were also honored before the game in a ceremony narrated by junior booter Nick Dion.

Zane Bundy

Regroup and rebound.

That’s the plan for the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad, which took a hard hit Thursday but still has a lot left to play for this season.

Falling 6-2 on the pitch in Port Townsend, the Wolves slid to 1-3 in the 1A Olympic League, 4-7-1 overall.

That guarantees them they can finish no higher than third in the four-team league.

Defending champ Klahowya (4-0, 12-1-1) and upstart Port Townsend (3-1, 6-5-1) are still vying for the conference title with two games to go in the regular season, while the Wolves need to hold off Chimacum (0-4, 1-10) if they want the league’s final playoff berth.

They’ll have a perfect opportunity to do that Saturday (11 AM), when they host the Cowboys on Senior Night.

Sweep the season series (Coupeville won 10-1 the first time around) and the Wolves clinch third-place and eliminate Chimacum from post-season contention.

As the #3 seed out of the Olympic League, CHS would travel to face the #2 team from the Nisqually League (likely Vashon Island) Saturday, May 7 in a loser-out district playoff match.

Win that one and they advance to the double-elimination portion of districts and play the Olympic League’s #1 seed May 10.

Facing off with Port Townsend, the Wolves were hoping to battle them as closely as they did in the two team’s first meeting — a 2-1 RedHawk win — but it wasn’t to be.

Sophomores Ethan Spark and Will Nelson each rattled home their fourth goals of the season — Spark’s coming on a header and Nelson’s on a free kick — to pace the Wolf attack.

The duo moved into a tie with senior Zane Bundy for second-place on the team scoring chart, behind Abraham Leyva’s 18 goals.
