JV boys romp to rivalry win

The young guns were firing on all cylinders.

Peppering host South Whidbey Wednesday, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team romped to a 62-46 win in the season opener for both teams.

Under the watchful eye of head coach Hunter Smith, the Wolves roared out to a big lead, before coasting home for the Island rivalry triumph.

With six different players knocking down buckets in the opening frame, CHS surged to an 18-3 lead by the end of the first quarter, driving a stake through the heart of Falcon Nation.

South Whidbey rallied a bit after that, (slightly) cutting the margin to 27-14 at the half, but the Wolves had an answer at every turn.

A 17-16 edge in the third quarter kept the lead at 44-30, before sophomore sensation Hunter Bronec threw down 10 of his game-high 20 points in the final period to seal the deal.

Seven Wolves etched their names in the scorebook, with Chase Anderson banking in 11 points and Hurlee Bronec rippling the nets for 10 more.

Aiden O’Neill (9), Johnny Porter (8), Carson Field (2), and Jack Porter (2) rounded out the offensive attack, while Yohannon Sandles, Mikey Robinett, and Malachi Somes also saw floor time for Coupeville.

The young Wolves get right back at it Saturday when they host Lakewood in another non-conference tilt, with the JV boys tipping at 5:15 PM.

Wolves feast on Falcon meat

They’re pretty much untouchable.

The Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad has the best record of any Wolf fall sports team, and it can slay you in multiple ways.

Thursday night the young guns showed they had grit, rallying to topple visiting South Whidbey 18-25, 25-20, 15-12.

The non-conference victory lifts the Wolves to 7-1 on the season and gives them a season sweep of the two matches with their archrivals from Langley.

“Pretty good!” said CHS coach Ashley Menges. “I was glad the girls were able to pull out the win.

“We don’t see many tests throughout the season, so I was pleased to see they can handle the pressure as well as they did.”

The Falcons claimed the early advantage, but the Wolves, who got stats from all nine girls to see the floor, never folded.

“We had a few up and down moments, getting rattled at times, especially in serve receive, but they were able to pull it together when it was needed,” Menges said.

“We definitely are going to start fine-tuning some skills getting towards the second half of the season,” she added. “But so far the girls have made great progress, and, as always, I’m very proud of them.”

Next up for the JV spikers is a return to Northwest 2B/1B League action.

The Wolves put their 4-0 conference record on the line Tuesday, Oct. 11, when Concrete visits Whidbey.

“I was proud of the girls”

Not all losses are created equal.

Case in point, Thursday night’s titanic volleyball showdown between Coupeville High School and archrival South Whidbey.

The Wolves, a scrappy 2B squad who didn’t get the audience they deserved thanks to a rescheduled football game pulling fans to a different part of town, left it all on the floor.

But the 1A Falcons, who have been playing superb ball of late, were able to fend off CHS, pulling out a 25-27, 25-12, 25-23, 25-18 non-conference win.

The loss drops Coupeville to 5-3, with all three of the team’s losses coming against schools from bigger classifications.

Two of those defeats have been to South Whidbey, which is 7-3 on the season.

While his squad wasn’t able to overcome the Falcon big hitters, CHS coach Cory Whitmore was pleased with the grit his players showed.

“Besides our second set, I thought we played really tough defensively and found ways to generate points when needed,” he said. “We just came up short with the amount of points generated.

“It is tough to be strong in the back row for so long, but I was proud of the girls for continuing to focus there.”

Coupeville got big performances from several players, with Grey Peabody notching a career-high 17 kills on a .500 hitting percentage.

“Madison McMillan was phenomenal on serve receive,” Whitmore said. “While Ryanne Knoblich really turned it up on her swing, taking aggressive swings, paying off to generate 13 kills.”

McMillan paced the Wolves with five service aces, while collecting a career-best 14 digs after coming into the night with 10 at the varsity level.

Coupeville has a couple of days to fine-tune things in practice before getting back into league play.

The Wolves, who sit atop the Northwest 2B/1B League with a 4-0 mark, host Concrete Tuesday, Oct. 11.

Whidbey gridiron teams highly ranked

They’re starting to notice us.

First came some respect from the computers, and now the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association is chiming in when it comes to high school football on The Rock.

Both 2B Coupeville (4-1 on the season) and 1A South Whidbey (5-0) are ranked #7 in their respective classifications in the latest RPI rankings from the WIAA.

That’s big, as the Rating Percentage Index is a key component used by seeding committees when they set up first round bracket pairings for the state tourney.

Coupeville, whose only loss came to South Whidbey, is 2-0 against fellow 2B schools, and 2-1 when playing up against 1A programs.

The Wolves host 2A Bellingham Thursday, then travel to Leavenworth the next Friday to play 1A Cascade, which is currently ranked #8 on the RPI chart.

The final two regular-season games are against 2B league rivals La Conner and Friday Harbor.

The current RPI rankings have Okanogan, Raymond-South Bend, and Napavine atop 2B, followed by Liberty (Spangle), Lind-Ritzville/Sprague, and Columbia (Burbank).

Coupeville slots in at #7, with Lake Roosevelt, Adna, and Jenkins (Chewelah) rounding out the top 10.

While Whidbey’s smaller schools are ruling the gridiron, things are not as fancy in the big city.

Oak Harbor, a 3A program, is 0-5 this season and not allowed anywhere near the RPI rankings.

Big brawl, narrow loss

It was a brawl on the hardwood.

In the first of two regular-season clashes between next-door neighbors, the South Whidbey High School varsity volleyball squad eked out a tough four-set win Monday, rallying to top visiting Coupeville.

The non-conference loss drops the Wolves to 1-1, though they’ll have an immediate chance to bounce back thanks to a Tuesday trip to Bothell to face Cedar Park Christian.

Coupeville came out strongly in Langley, winning the opening set 25-15.

After that, however, South Whidbey found a winning strategy, capturing the next three sets 26-24, 25-22, 25-17.

Which means, even in a loss, the Wolves were only outscored by three points, with the Falcons holding a 91-88 advantage at the end.

CHS coach Cory Whitmore is already looking ahead to the rematch in Coupeville, which arrives Oct. 1.

“I’m excited that we get another chance to face them again, and I know the girls are too,” he said.

Monday’s match started out as one thing, then took a detour, with the Wolves not quite able to get the car fully back on the road.

“We played lights out in the first set and let them crawl back into the game in the second,” Whitmore said. “With some untimely errors and them taking care of the ball, they overtook in the second.

“We fought hard and kept it competitive in the third set, but our four service errors and a few attacking errors gave them chances to keep their three-point lead on us.

“In the fourth we had a lot of fight but lost gas, as again, some serves and attacks that had worked all night, weren’t there.”
