Brotemarkle bashes, McMillan mashes

The season opened with a bang.

Or several bangs.

Playing in a three-team jamboree Friday in Oak Harbor, the Coupeville High School softball squad brought out the big bats, bashing the ball under cloudy skies.

The Wolves started against South Whidbey — the team they face Wednesday in their regular-season home opener — and rolled to an 11-0 win.

“We got off to a fast start,” said CHS coach Kevin McGranahan. “Seemed like everyone was hitting and hitting it hard.”

Sophomore Madison McMillan delivered the game’s biggest bash, launching a two-run triple down the left field line, while the Wolves were effective in all facets of the game.

“We were aggressive on the bases and at the plate, something we have been working on,” McGranahan said. “So it was good to see them translate it to a game.”

In the nightcap, Coupeville squared off against their hosts, but the teams were only able to put up an inning and a half of play before darkness sent everyone home.

The Wolves got just one round of at-bats in the bottom of the first inning, but made it count, with sophomore slugger Taylor Brotemarkle tagging a two-run inside-the-park home run to kick things off.

Coming on a line drive to deepest, darkest (for real) center field, it bodes well for the season ahead.

Coupeville opens the regular season Monday on the road against always-tough Meridian, then plays eight of its next 10 at home, offering Wolf sluggers plenty of opportunities to send balls screaming down towards Prairie Center.

As he prepares for his seventh season at the helm of the Wolves, McGranahan is ready and rarin’ to get going.

“All in all, very happy with how we played and are gelling as a team,” he said. “Everyone is contributing, and the girls are excited for the season.”

No more spikes, just awards

Another successful season in the books.

Coupeville High School varsity volleyball coach Cory Whitmore made it seven straight winning seasons, guiding the Wolves to a 10-6 mark this fall.

That includes a third-consecutive 2nd place showing in league play — behind just four-time defending 2B state champ La Conner — and a strong showing at the bi-district tourney.

Coupeville thunked Northwest Christian in straight sets, then put together their best performance against the Braves in a tough championship match.

Next year promises great upheaval, with La Conner coach Suzanne Marble having retired after 30 seasons, and the District 1/2 tourney set to send two teams, and not just one, to state.

While the Wolves lose key seniors, they can return four letter winners, plus several other players who were vital to the JV going 12-2 and beating La Conner under the guidance of Ashley Menges.

But the future is the future, and the present was what was honored Tuesday, as the Wolf spikers capped the 2022 campaign with an awards banquet.

Coupeville’s five All-League players — Maddie Georges, Alita Blouin, Grey Peabody, Ryanne Knoblich, and Jill Prince — were acknowledged, while both the varsity and JV handed out multiple honors.

JV spikers fill up stat sheet

No one won like they did.

The Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad cruised to a school-best 12 wins this fall, including taking down previously untouchable La Conner in the season finale.

Along the way, third-year coach Ashley Menges got action for 11 girls, with 10 of them recording stats as the season unspooled.

Wolves, Braves rumble on hardwood

One point.

That was all that separated La Conner and Coupeville Tuesday night, as their JV volleyball teams waged an epic battle.

In the end, the host Braves pulled out a 25-23, 22-25, 15-13 win, keeping alive their streak of dominance.

But don’t overlook the Wolves, who are getting closer and closer to knocking the league powerhouse off its throne.

Now 6-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 10-2 overall, Coupeville’s JV has forced La Conner to a hotly contested third set the last two times the schools have met.

Tuesday’s match was ultimately a one-point affair, with La Conner holding a 62-61 edge, and upset rumblings are getting louder and louder.

Next up is a rematch in Coupeville Oct. 25, and Wolf fans will want to show up early that night.

Reflecting on Tuesday’s loss, CHS coach Ashley Menges can see where her team had La Conner’s number, and where the Wolves let the Braves slip away.

“It was a night full of ups and downs,” she said. “At some points, we were really on, and other points, we were very off.

“The first set started with a lot of point breaks going our way, and they started off with great energy and execution, but once it came down to crunch time, we let one point lost equal three points lost.”

Coupeville rebounded, however, getting stronger as the match unfolded.

“The girls recovered late in the second, playing catch up,” Menges said. “But you could tell they wanted it.

“Third set, it came down to who made less errors, and who recovered better, and we were right there. Luckily, we get redemption #2 next week.”

JV spikers serving up winners

They came ready to crack Concrete.

Roaring out of the gate Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad obliterated the visiting Lions 25-3, 25-13, 25-13.

The sixth-straight win for the Wolf young guns, it lifts them to 5-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 8-1 overall.

Coupeville was relentless from the service stripe all night, piling up 36 aces, and the winners started flying early.

Katie Marti opened things with six quick points on her serve, Issabel Johnson dropped a couple of nasty offerings Concrete had no chance of hitting, and then Taylor Brotemarkle went to work.

The Wolf sophomore stepped to the line with a 10-2 advantage and ran the lead up to 20-2 in the span of about 17 seconds.

Concrete only managed to return one of Brotemarkle’s first 10 serves, and that brief rally was quickly crushed when Aby Wood delivered a spike winner at the net.

The Wolves closed the opening set with Grier Mooney peppering Concrete’s would-be serve returners, and the rout was on.

While the second and third set were closer than the first frame, Coupeville quickly regained control each time, earning a nod of approval from coach Ashley Menges.

Teagan Calkins and Jada Heaton each cracked gym-shaking winners while patrolling the net, while Johnson also brought the thunder when Concrete managed to briefly force a back-and-forth.

Menges got solid play from across her roster, with all 10 girls in uniform contributing.

Chloe Marzocca, Carly Burt, and Oktober Frost also saw action, with Marzocca thumping a dramatic service ace on her first swing at the line.

The league victory marked the start of a busy week for the Wolves, who travel to Mount Vernon Christian Thursday, then host non-league foe Neah Bay Saturday.
