Kyle Bodamer: American Rebel

Kyle Bodamer: Rebel, Legend, Hero.

There’s a movie, one of the true American classics, a little gem known as “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure.”

Midway through this all-time great (which I may have seen more times than is reasonable), there’s this exchange between our hero and his wannabe-girlfriend.

“There’s a lotta things about me you don’t know anything about, Dottie. Things you wouldn’t understand. Things you couldn’t understand. Things you shouldn’t understand.”

“I don’t understand.”

“You don’t wanna get mixed up with a guy like me. I’m a loner, Dottie. A rebel.”

Take out the loner part (he has too many friends) and keep the rebel part, and you have Coupeville High School junior Kyle Bodamer.

Sure, he’s a baseball and tennis player for the Wolves, and a pretty darn good one, but Bodamer, who celebrates his birthday today, is more than that.

Much more.

He’s the guy who tempts the wrath of the Fun Police by dressing up as a nun and ticking off stuffy, over-privileged rival private schools with his antics during volleyball matches.

That’s a legend right there.

He’s one of the dudes who finishes the tennis season with partially-healed burns on his legs because he dives on CEMENT courts like he’s still wearing a baseball uniform and he thinks the court will be as soft as the infield.

Or because he doesn’t care that it’s hard. It’s just in his way.

He does it all, this American rebel.

Swatting killer bees with Brian Norris on the tennis court.

Macking on baseball mom cupcakes.

Or, coming really, really close to nailing CHS baseball coach Willie Smith in the head with a line drive double a moment after Smith yelled at him to “Pull your head out of your butt and concentrate, Bodamer!!”

They both had mega-watt smiles as Bodamer gave him the stare-down from second, two showmen on the same crazy wavelength.

He is one of the most entertaining people to pull on the Wolf uniform and we, his fans, hail him.

Never let the Fun Police win.

Shine on, you crazy rebel. Shine on.

The machine rolled through town.

The names may change, but the South Whidbey High School girls’ tennis team remains a fairly flawless, match-winning beast year in and year out. Little has changed in 2014.

Despite no longer having any Newman sisters to head up the roster, the Falcons are still the premier program in the district, a fact they reinforced with a crisp 5-0 win at Coupeville Tuesday.

The Wolves did take a set from South Whidbey at second doubles, pushed two other sets to 7-5 and accepted no bagels (6-0) on the afternoon. So, positives.

Now 3-5 on the season, CHS travels to Granite Falls Wednesday, then hosts Lakewood, a team they beat earlier in the season, Thursday.

Complete Tuesday results:

Varsity:

1st Singles — Allie Hanigan lost to Isla Dubendorf 7-5, 6-1

2nd Singles — McKenzie Bailey lost to Bayley Gochanour 6-1, 6-1

1st Doubles — Samantha Martin/Sydney Aparicio lost to Tess Radisch/Amelia Weeks 6-1, 6-1

2nd Doubles — Wynter Thorne/Sydney Autio lost to Colleen Groce/Lindsay Oppelt 2-6, 6-3, 10-8

3rd Doubles — Valen Trujillo/Micky LeVine lost to Brea Gaugen/Katrina Layton 7-5, 6-1

JV:

4th Doubles — Ana Luvera/Ivy Luvera lost to Sophia Nilsen/Kendra Warwick 8-1

The rivalry still rages.

Even as more Cascade Conference foes picked up tennis the last two seasons, Coupeville’s most enduring battle has been with non-conference opponent Friday Harbor.

The two schools have gone back and forth for years, and nothing looks like that is going to change anytime soon.

Monday, it was the host Wolverines time to pull out a barn-burner, nipping Coupeville 3-2 to avenge a loss on Whidbey back in March.

Now 3-4 on the season, CHS has a busy week ahead of it, weather permitting, as the Wolves host South Whidbey Tuesday, travel to Granite Falls Wednesday, then host Lakewood Thursday.

Complete Monday results:

Varsity:

1st Singles — Allie Hanigan beat Yasmin Sarah 6-1, 1-6, 10-7

“It was a weird match, to say the least,” said CHS coach Ken Stange. “I don’t quite know what happened to Allie in the second set, but she was able to pull out the third set tiebreaker.

“It’s not easy coming back from losing a 6-1 set,” he added. “Allie is my toughest player, and she never gives in.”

It was the third straight win for Hanigan (5-2 on the year), who earned Player of the Match honors.

2nd Singles — Sydney Autio lost to Roxanne Bormann 6-1, 6-0

Autio, who has been playing doubles after missing the first chunk of the season with an injury, stepped in for Jacki Ginnings, who was ill.

Sydney is developing a singles game,” Stange said. “She could be a formidable opponent next season. She has all the basic tools in her tennis toolbox. We just have to finish putting it all together.”

1st Doubles — Sydney Aparicio/Samantha Martin lost to Maddy Marinkovich/Ashton Timmons 6-1, 7-5

“Tough match for my 1’s,” Stange said. “Considering that neither had played a regular season varsity match before the start of this season, they are both developing improved games.”

2nd Doubles — Wynter Thorne/McKenzie Bailey lost to Meagan Anderson/Kendall Calvert 6-3, 6-3

3rd Doubles — Micky LeVine/Valen Trujillo beat Sophie Dillery/Summer Fox 6-1, 5-1 (match called a game short due to ferry)

“This was a fun little match,” Stange said. “Valen and Micky are a pair of Energizer bunnies, so to speak.

“They were flying around the court, chasing down loose balls. The other team didn’t even know what hit them!”

JV:

4th Doubles — Ana Luvera/Ivy Luvera beat Samantha Hopkins/Morgan Timmons 6-4

5th Doubles — Haleigh Deasy/Jazmine Franklin beat Zoe Kromer/Sydney Wilson 6-1

6th Doubles — Bree Daigneault/McKenzie Bailey (CHS) beat Crystal Gao/Isabel Brown 6-0

Did Beyonce’s world tour come through Coupeville?

At the very least, Coupeville High School tennis practice was put on hold for a bit Wednesday while auditions for a sequel to “Single Ladies” was held.

Don’t hide behind those sunglasses, Wolf coach Ken Stange. Everyone knows you have moves like Swayze.
