Cassidy Moody is one to watch.

The Coupeville High School freshman has thrown her name into state title contention in the past week, setting a PR in the high jump at Thursday’s home track meet.

Clearing an even five feet, she vaults all the way into a tie for the third-best performance by a 1A girl this spring, just four inches off state leader Sienna Swannack of Lakeside (Nine Mile).

Moody’s charge into the top 10 gives CHS eight athletes (five girls and three boys) who currently sit in the top 10 in at least one event among all 1A athletes this spring.

The Wolves narrowly miss out on having nine, as sophomore Danny Conlisk sits at #11 in the 400 and #12 in the 800.

Coupeville’s top 10 performances as of Sunday morning:

Girls:

100 Hurdles — Lindsey Roberts (3rd) 16.30

4 x 100 — Roberts, Mallory Kortuem, Maya Toomey-Stout, Lauren Grove (5th) 52.69

Makana Stone can beat you a billion ways.

So far this spring, the fleet-footed Coupeville High School junior has chosen to focus on five ways, with her performances in each of those events putting her among the 13 best among all 1A competitors.

Stone sits third in the 400 and ninth in the 200, while helping anchor relay teams that currently have the second, fourth and thirteenth fastest times.

Her five top times puts her atop the Wolf team, but Sylvia Hurlburt, Marisa Etzell and Lauren Grove are hot on her heels, all boasting four Top-50 performances.

On the boys side, Lathom Kelley and Dalton Martin lead the way with three Top-50 finishes each.

OK, calm down, there are still two months to go, but … right now, this moment … Makana Stone would be a state champion.

The Coupeville High School sophomore has run the fastest 400 time of any girl in 1A, 2B or 1B this season, clocking in at 61.46 at the Seattle Academy Relays Mar. 22.

Three meets into the season, Stone appears four times on the 1A girls Top 10 lists, with top-five times in the 200, 400 and as a member of the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay teams, where she’s joined by Marisa Etzell, Sylvia Hurlburt and Lauren Grove.

None of those four Wolves are seniors, either, with Etzell the oldest as a mere junior. Continued good times should be ahead.

The CHS boys don’t have any athletes in the Top 10 currently, but they do have a fair amount making the list if you take one step down and look at the top performers in District 1.
