Valen Trujillo went down swinging for the stars.

The Coupeville High School junior won three of four matches Thursday at the district tennis tourney in Spanaway, falling just a slot shy of advancing to state.

Trujillo claimed third place in an eight-player field dominated by private school girls who play year-round on indoor tennis courts.

Wolf sophomores Payton Aparicio and Sage Renninger finished fifth on the doubles side of the draw after winning one of three matches.

Coupeville also had three seniors along for the trip — singles ace Sydney Autio and doubles tandem Jazmine Franklin and McKenzie Bailey — but the trio were knocked out after two matches.

Olympic League singles champ Valen Trujillo poses with Wolf coach Ken Stange.

Top of the world, ma! Valen Trujillo sailed through three matches Tuesday en route to a singles title.

If there was any doubt the 1A Olympic League tennis scene belonged to Coupeville, scratch that.

On the heels of their second straight unbeaten stroll to a league title, the Wolf netters dominated play Tuesday in Chimacum at the league’s postseason tourney.

Junior Valen Trujillo swept to a singles title, while sophomores Payton Aparicio and Sage Renninger matched her with a title in doubles play.

Three seniors — doubles duo Jazmine Franklin and McKenzie Bailey and singles player Sydney Autio — finished fourth at the league tourney and also advance to districts.

That will be Thursday, May 19 in Spanaway.

After winning her opening match Tuesday, Autio was leading late in her semifinal and on her way to facing off with Trujillo, when she suffered an injury.

She gutted it out and remained on the court to finish a three-set duel, then defaulted her next match and went home to heal.

“I bet she’ll be OK next week,” said a confident CHS coach Ken Stange.

Ken Stange 3, David King 2.

Coupeville High School claimed its fifth league title banner in the short history of the 1A Olympic League Tuesday, and the Wolves did it in style.

Swatting host Chimacum 6-1, the CHS girls’ tennis squad improved to 4-0 in league play (8-3 overall) and sealed the deal on back-to-back crowns.

With the Coupeville boys having claimed a title this fall, that gives Stange three championships in the two years the league has existed.

King and the Wolf girls’ basketball squad have also won back-to-back titles.

The netters took the court Tuesday not sure what to expect, having edged Chimacum 4-3 the first time around on a day when the Cowboys were shorthanded.

Stange had nothing to worry about, however, as top to bottom, the Wolves came out ready to rumble, or, in some cases, get a bit of revenge.

They were especially effective in tiebreakers, which was a good thing, since five of the seven matches were decided that way.

Coupeville won four of the five, with Bree Daigneault pulling out the most suspenseful one at third singles.

Down a set, she rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 12-10 win that brought a huge grin to her coach’s face.

Bree played the most exciting match,” Stange said. “Amelia (Breithaupt) was running all over the place, but Bree persevered.

“It’s not easy to win after dropping the first set,” he added. “She was so darned focused. She was also quite nervous. I’m happy that she won, but I’m proud of her for putting forth such effort.”

Twice the wins. Twice the statement.

Bringing home two victories Tuesday, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad moved a huge step closer to defending its 1A Olympic League title.

Knocking off host Klahowya twice, the Wolves improved to 3-0 in league play, 5-3 overall.

That puts them a game-and-a-half up on Chimacum (1-1, 3-6) and three up on Klahowya (0-3, 4-8).

Beat the Cowboys Apr. 26 on their home court and Coupeville clinches its second straight league title banner.

The Wolves effectively eliminated Klahowya from title contention Tuesday by finishing off a win from a match that was left unfinished Mar. 24, before rolling to a second win in the day’s regularly scheduled match.

The earlier match had been frozen at 3-3 for close to a month, with Valen Trujillo and Sydney Jackson locked at 5-5 in the third set of their singles bout.

Trujillo came out loaded for bear Tuesday, winning eight of nine points as she polished off a 6-7(0-7), 6-4, 7-5 victory.

After that, she and her teammates rolled to a 4-2 win in the nightcap.

“It was a very businesslike win for Sydney. She was in control the whole way.”

Hailed by Stange as “the match of the day,” the Wolf sophomores battled back from down 5-4 in the final set to knock off a highly-regarded duo.

With two wins in two matches against Klahowya’s top dogs, Aparicio and Renninger have clinched the league’s top seed heading into the postseason.

“The goal: win league, win district … and beyond,” Stange said.

2nd doubles — McKenzie Bailey/Maggie Crimmins lost to Mary Ann Marker/Maddy Reinks 6-1, 6-2

Everything went to plan.

Playing on its home courts Monday, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad enjoyed sunny skies, warm weather, no breeze and a chance to paddle an opponent.

Facing a Friday Harbor team that was very young and very much in the development stage, the Wolves romped to a 6-1 win, their first official victory of the season.

Coupeville now sits at 1-1, with two matches (a 3-1 lead over Granite Falls and a 3-3 tie with Klahowya) still waiting to be finished later in the season.

The Wolves hit the road Wednesday to face Island arch-rival South Whidbey in Langley, then sit until Apr. 12.

Facing off with a green Wolverine squad (more than half its players are newcomers and the coach is in his first season), Coupeville put them down quickly.

Only two varsity matches resembled anything close to a battle.

Playing pro sets instead of the normal best two-of-three sets format to allow Friday Harbor time to ankle to the ferry, Coupeville dropped two or fewer games in five of seven contests.

Best moments:

Valen Trujillo dropping a series of lobs over her opponents head, artfully using her shot-making skills to baffle her foe.

Bree Daigneault rolling her eyes way into the back of her head and moaning “Moooooooooooommmmm, you’re making me nervous,” and then immediately proving she wasn’t really all that nervous by whipping a winner down the line.

The entire CHS squad proving once again it is the kindest, politest, most considerate tennis squad I have ever witnessed, stopping to compliment their opponents on almost every shot, even when the Wolves were rolling.

When I played at Tumwater High School back in the day, we took great delight in hitting our own teammates during practice and once set off a near-riot while in Aberdeen.

Monday, almost to a girl, the Wolves went out of their way to personally thank the Friday Harbor girls for making the trip to Whidbey.

Kids today, so much classier than we ever were…
