South Whidbey fans reading this blog in the early days…

It started with four exclamation points in the first headline and no photo with the story.

And a heck of a lot more frequent open-handed slaps to the South Whidbey fan base back in the early days, when I was feisty and feelin’ my oats.

I’m so much more responsible these days. Or just more tired.

Anyway, exactly 14 years ago, on August 15, 2012, I published my first words on Coupeville Sports with https://coupevillesports.com/2012/08/15/hark-fall-sports-approaches/.

Wolf football coach Tony Maggio was the first person to ever see their name on the blog, with Amanda d’Almeida the first athlete to appear — though it wasn’t until this very morning, 14 years after the fact, that I finally noticed her last name had been misspelled in that debut story all this time.

It’s corrected now, though I did resist the temptation to retroactively add a photo to the story just to mess with people’s memories, Mandela Effect-style.

This is article #12,784 and much remains the same from the moment article #1 hit the internet.

The look of the blog is still very 2012, because it was simple, straight forward and easy to read back then, and remains that way.

No pop-up ads to constantly close, no weird colors or layouts to abuse your eyeballs, as little confusion as possible.

Plus, I’m obstinate in the extreme and have taken great delight in chafing WordPress by ignoring most of their “innovations” over the years, holding on to a background theme which was long ago retired.

When I write and publish, I steadfastly click on the “classic edit” mode, which they had to grandfather in to deal with those of us who refuse to use their “new, improved” editing tools, which are annoying, unhelpful, and a pain in the tush.

As we near the start of another high school sports year — football begins this coming Wednesday, August 19, with everything else kicking off five days later — Coupeville Sports has survived a pandemic, my two-and-a-half-month side trip to my sister’s homestead in West Virginia, and my daily mood swings.

Some days I envision hitting publish on story #20,000. On others, I don’t.

Across the past 14 years, there have been extreme highs, with Wolf supernovas Danny Conlisk and Alex Murdy winning state track and field titles, teams pulling off miracle wins, and the chance to help create things bigger than myself.

If there is a legacy to Coupeville Sports, it is in the Wall of Fame in the CHS gym and the memories from the 101st and 50th anniversary shindigs for Wolf boys’ and girls’ basketball.

And in the enduring words of the low rent grifter who told me I was a “sick human being, a punk, and an asshole” after I wrote a series of articles about a shot-in-Vegas YouTube show which dripped sleaze on our island for a bit.

PS — Still haven’t built that housing development, have you?

There have also been gut-wrenching losses on the field and floor, and much more personal ones in real life.

And there have been a constant flood of numbers.

So, so many track and field times to transcribe over the years, knowing that when (not if) I get that 24th place finisher’s time off by a single half-second, I will undoubtedly hear about it.

So, where do we go from here?

I don’t really know.

Like I said, my moods are fickle, but my typing fingers are (fairly) fast.

The Wolves who will be seniors this fall were three or four when I launched the blog, and it’s been operating virtually every day of their sporting lives.

Put in four more years and we’ll have a graduating class that never lived in a world where Coupeville Sports didn’t exist.

Or don’t and return some anonymity to young lives already beset on every side by modern day social media. Which might not be a bad thing.

We’ll see.

For now, we’ll note today’s milestone while daydreaming about Dairy Queen becoming my first national sponsor and home-delivering a tasty treat to mark the occasion.

And tomorrow?

In the words of the late, great Scarlett O’Hara, “Tomorrow is another day.”

I’m staring into the abyss, and my old friend stares right back at me.

That Coupeville Sports — a free-to-read blog hyper-focused on small-town athletics (and a few other things) going down on a prairie in the middle of a chunk of rock way up in the Pacific Northwest hinterlands — is still alive, is nothing short of a miracle.

Or so I tell myself as I pound out stories at 2 AM on a computer fueled by a very-tired hamster on a wheel.

Somehow, we’re creeping up on 14 years, with the blog having debuted back in August 2012, and this is article #12,762.

We’ve survived a pandemic, me couch-surfing in West Virginia for three months, and a weaselly South Whidbey School Board member trying to get my advertisers to drop me in 2024 — while not realizing those ads were a one-time payment, with most of them having signed up eons ago.

But now, less than four weeks away from the first high school practice for a CHS sports team — football hits the field August 19 — I’m back to playing my old game.

Can I survive long enough to get to the fall, when donations typically rise and I’ll have the chance to seek financial aid from the booster club?

Or being unable to pay rent when August arrives, in a matter of a few days, will I finally achieve my destiny of living in a van down by the river? Just without the van.

I currently have three monthly bills — $600 for rent, $50 for internet (necessary for writing an internet blog), and $35 for phone service — with WordPress expecting $300 in mid-September to keep Coupeville Sports functioning for another year.

Since returning to Whidbey, I haven’t owned a vehicle, using Island Transit, dodging the high price of gas in America, and staring down oncoming traffic while navigating the side of the highway between bus stops.

Some of you are remarkably careful drivers, while a few of you need to focus on staying on your side of the white line a little better. Just sayin’.

I came back from my sisters in West Virginia because I hurt my foot clearing land, got an infection, and needed access to my Washington state health care. My recovery has prevented me from doing the kind of side work which has helped keep me afloat in previous years.

This is a tough time financially for almost all of us, except for maybe the billionaires out there, and I realize people’s generosity can only go so far.

I’m not asking for a handout.

I offer a unique service. No one else is doing what I’m doing, at least in this region.

If wall-to-wall coverage of Cow Town is something which matters to you, if having access to 900+ articles a year, is something you want to keep going, I need a little help.

The foot is almost healed, which would allow me to pick up outdoors work again, and there’s always a .0000001 chance Sports Illustrated or some Canadian media empire will suddenly decide to fully fund my writing.

Sweet pipe dreams are made of this…

If you can help, I greatly appreciate it.

There are a lot of stories yet to tell, if I can hold off the abyss a little longer.

Side note — see my favorite film from the last year. It’s available on Kanopy, the free streaming site offered by your local library!

This is probably the spot where I should put on a suit and slick my hair back, televangelist-style.

Looks in closet … no suits, lots of shorts.

Looks in mirror … no hair, or at least not enough to get that lush Jim Bakker or Kenneth Copeland ‘do going.

See, a receding hairline is why I don’t have that indoor/outdoor swimming pool, with mansion attached, yet.

Anyways.

I won’t take much of your time. Or offer any miracles, ala the fancy-haired dudes rambling on your Grandma’s TV at 3 AM in the morning.

The facts are these:

Spring sports for Coupeville High School teams start Monday, with the first practices for softball, girls’ tennis, track and field, and baseball.

Games begin about two weeks later.

This blog writer has been there, freezing his tush off on the prairie in “spring” weather since 2012.

Varsity, JV, C-Team, middle school, little league, community sports, I cover it all and you can read about it all for free.

We’re pushing 12,000 articles about the sporting life in Cow Town.

But if I’m going to make it through another season and make a run at a 13-year anniversary this August, I need your support.

WordPress wants its annual $107 in mid-March, and I don’t have it.

I also don’t have the money to get the oil change on the car I’ve been borrowing since my own Xterra melted down and joined all the other vehicles I’ve sent to the great auto wrecking lot in the sky.

And I’m fairly certain the landlord’s cats are eyeballing me.

“You’d better not mess with our ability to get wet food, slick!”

So, here we are again.

If you’d like to see the blog make it through another spring, I’m asking for your support. Whether it’s $5 or a new indoor/outdoor swimming pool, everything helps.

If not, I understand.

There will be a time at some point where I will have to hang up the keyboard and go back to a job that likely requires wearing pants. That’s life.

I leave the decision in your hands.
