Young guns, having some fun.

That’s not just lyrics from an extra-bouncy 1982 song by Wham, but also an apt description of Saturday’s track and field meet.

Coupeville High School sent its young bunch on the road for the Stanwood Freshman/Sophomore Showcase, returning with 26 PRs and a win in the 110 hurdles from Axel Marshall.

Competing against a packed field of bigger schools, the Wolves claimed seventh place in the freshman boys’ team standings and eighth among sophomores, while the CHS girls were ninth best in both competitions.

Lake Stevens (boys) and Stanwood (girls) finished atop the reader board for freshmen, with Arlington coming out on top in both sophomore battles.

Marshall narrowly missed a double dip, finishing 2nd in the 300 hurdles, while Wyatt Fitch-Marron was 2nd in the freshman high jump.

Toss in some third and fourth-place finishes, plus a lot of personal bests, and the young Wolves made their mark in the big time.

“Great showing by our freshman and sophomore athletes today, well done!” said CHS coach Bob Martin. “The future is looking bright!”

With Spring Break upon them, the Wolves, young or old, don’t have another meet for a bit.

Coupeville returns to action as a complete team Thursday, April 10, when it travels to Shoreline to join Archbishop Thomas Murphy, Shorecrest, and Shorewood for an afternoon of competition.

It’s an event so big it takes two trips to Lakewood to complete.

Coupeville Middle School track and field athletes officially wrapped their season Wednesday at Day #2 of the Cascade League Championships.

The seven-team royal rumble started May 25, with a ton of prelims and a couple finals, then athletes came back to finish things off on the final day of the month.

The big highlight for Coupeville Wednesday was a win in the high jump from 7th grader Wyatt Fitch-Marron, who soared to an even five feet.

But his triumph wasn’t the only bright spot, as numerous Wolves captured PR’s and CMS nailed down a pair of 2nd place finishes.

Wolf 6th grader Collin Mirabile was runner-up in the shot put, a feat matched by a 4 x 100 relay squad made up of 7th graders Nick Laska, Beckett Green, Roger Merino-Martinez, and Nathan Niewald.

Regardless of where they placed in the standings, every Wolf in competition earned some praise from their coaches.

“Our athletes continued to perform well during our district finals today,” said Jon Gabelein.

“Our 8th grade athletes will be strong additions to the high school track program next year,” he added.

“While the majority of our athletes are 6th/7th grade students this year and provide our program with a great foundation next year.”

While the season is done, the future is a bright one for the young Wolves.

“We are proud of all they accomplished this season,” said fellow CMS coach Amber Wyman. “And I am sure they will continue to improve.”

Tamsin Ward is not messing around.

The Coupeville Middle School 6th grader won three events Thursday in her home track and field debut, giving her five victories across her first two meets.

Ward romped to wins in the 100, shot put, and long jump, setting PR’s in the latter two of those events.

Facing off with South Whidbey and Lakewood, the Wolves won 10 events and set 86 PR’s on a cold, wet “spring” afternoon.

Joining Ward on the victory stand was fellow 6th grader Hyley Farrell, who won the 200 and led off a victorious 4 x 200 relay unit.

That team also included 6th graders Kennedy O’Neill, Elizabeth Marshall, and Sage Stavros.

CMS 7th graders Lillian Ketterling (Discus), Wyatt Fitch-Marron (High Jump), Roger Merino-Martinez (Long Jump), and Nick Laska (Discus) came out on top as well, with Kayla Crane (1600) the lone Wolf 8th grader to win an event.

Coupeville’s 6th/7th grade girls won the team title, joining Lakewood (6th/7th boys) and South Whidbey (8th girls, 8th boys) as front-runners.

Pulling off a successful home meet, especially on a dank day, took the work of many, with high school coaches and athletes helping their middle school counterparts.

CHS alum Jaylen Nitta, who has worked with both the middle and high school teams, stepped in to be the starter, and kept everything moving smoothly.

The young Wolves return to action next Wednesday, May 10, when they host South Whidbey for the final home meet of the season.

No more road trips.

Wednesday’s trek to Everett to face Northshore Christian Academy was the final time this season the Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball squad will bounce across the backroads of America.

After this the Wolves cap the 2022 season with a pair of home rumbles, welcoming Sultan to The Rock Monday, Dec. 12, before hosting South Whidbey two days later.

Those games will put a bow on a season of learning and improvement, as CMS coaches Craig Anderson, Jon Roberts, and Jaylen Nitta continue to finetune the collective skillsets of their assembled players.

How the final off-Island excursion went:

Level 1:

Northshore played a “staggering press” and drove the Wolf ballhandlers bonkers in a lopsided 45-8 win.

The hosts went up 34-0 at the half, as Coupeville struggled to adapt while missing leading scorer Jayden McManus, who was out sick.

“Missing Jayden again is a true bummer,” Roberts said. “He is a KEY competitor on our team.

“His inside presence on defense keeps the other team off. On offense his inside game opens up our outside game. Alas that didn’t happen.”

Roberts was pleased, however, with how his team responded in the second half.

Instead of hanging their heads and accepting the loss, the Wolves manned up and fought Northshore virtually even across the third and fourth quarters.

“What I did see was a team after halftime that used the anger of being nearly beat to pulp to find a lower gear and the result was far better defensive play,” Roberts said.

“Steal attempts, riding players hard to the bucket and picking up fouls. Getting rebounds and going HARD back to the bucket.

“Coaches emphasized grit, toughness in practice on Tuesday. We saw some of this today.”

Riley Lawless paced CMS with four points, while Davin Houston and Chayse Van Velkinburgh each popped for a bucket.

Carson Grove, Sage Arends, Mahkai Myles, Joshua Stockdale, and Nic Laska helped round out the Wolf roster.

Level 2:

Northshore is the only Cascade League school not to field three teams, so Coupeville combined players from its second and third squads in a 47-14 loss.

Wyatt Fitch-Marron had the hot hand for the Wolves, rattling the rims for a team-high six points, while Roger Merino-Martinez (4), Jacob Barajas (2), and Liam Lawson (2) also scored.

Lawson had the shot of the afternoon, as Katie Smith’s nephew knocked down a long jumper where he was mere inches away from getting credit for a three-ball.

Hunter Atteberry, Nathan Niewald, Brantley Campbell, Charles Hart, Zach Blitch, Dylan Robinett, Kenneth Jacobsen, and Khanor Jump also saw floor time for CMS.
