Dodging rain, racking up wins

Spring has fully sprung.

Maybe not in the weather category, as Mother Nature keeps everyone guessing as to her intentions, but enough games have been played that it’s time to once again kick into running weekly standings stories.

The week ahead adds another level of intrigue, with Northwest 2B/1B League teams squaring off against each other for the first time.

Coupeville High School baseball and softball clash with Friday Harbor twice — at home Tuesday, then on the road Thursday.

After that, the hardball squad wraps the week by hosting South Whidbey Saturday for a non-conference tilt.

Meanwhile, Wolf girls’ tennis is slated to (finally) host its first match on its new home courts Tuesday, with East Jefferson coming to town.

Then the netters hit the road Friday for a trip to Friday Harbor for the first of four clashes with the only other NWL school to play the sport.

Wrapping things up, CHS track is on the road twice, with a trip to Mount Vernon Wednesday for a league meet, and a trek to Stanwood Saturday for a freshman/sophomore showcase.

As we head into the great unknown, here’s where things sit as of Mar. 23:

Borderites power past Wolves

They left their offense at home.

Unable to generate much of an attack Saturday, the Coupeville High School baseball squad was blanked 12-0 by host Blaine, leaving the young Wolves winless on the season.

The non-conference defeat, which came against an always strong 1A hardball program, drops CHS to 0-3 on the campaign.

Up next is a return home, with the first Northwest 2B/1B League game of the season on the docket.

The Wolves host Friday Harbor Tuesday, before island-hopping for a rematch with the Wolverines two days later.

Coupeville will then close a busy week with a non-conference home game Saturday, Mar. 29 against Island rival South Whidbey.

Saturday’s game was originally set to be the season opener but was rained out.

This time around, the liquid sunshine remained at bay, but the host Borderites stayed hot all afternoon.

Blaine pushed one run across in the first, four more in the second, then tossed a five-spot on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third.

Two more runs in the fourth set the final margin, with the game mercy ruled after five frames.

Coupeville only put three baserunners aboard in this one, with the lone hit being a two-out single from Camden Glover in the top of the first inning.

Other than that, the only brief fire ignited by the Wolves came in the fourth, when Glover and Coop Cooper drew back-to-back one-out walks.

Unfortunately for CHS, the next batter popped up into a double play, with the Blaine catcher snagging the airborne ball for out #2, then nailing a straying runner at second for out #3.

Senior Landon Roberts and freshman Carson Grove teamed up on the mound for the Wolves, with Roberts picking up two strikeouts.

While they were outhit 10-1 on the day, one bright spot for Coupeville’s hardball warriors came on defense, where the visitors committed their fewest errors of the still-young season.

Hardball squad falls in road opener

Improvement, if not yet a win.

Game #2 for a rebuilding Coupeville High School baseball program was a definite step in the right direction.

While the young Wolves fell 7-2 to East Jefferson Thursday in Port Townsend, nearly everything across the board was trending upwards for the visitors after a blowout loss in their opener.

This time around, Coupeville put runners on base in every inning and was a base knock or two away from really making a surge.

The pitching was still electric at times, with three Wolves combining to rack up 11 strikeouts, and the game was close for a good chunk.

But one problem from opening day still lingered — too many errors on defense — and that ultimately undid CHS and sent it to 0-2 on the season.

The Wolves struck first Thursday, plating their first run of the campaign in the top of the first, after Camden Glover ripped an RBI double to right to send Carson Grove sprinting home.

Starting pitcher Coop Cooper retired five of the first six batters he faced, and the lead held up until East Jefferson scratched out a run in the bottom of the second thanks to a pair of Wolf miscues.

Coupeville stranded a pair of runners in the third, then got stung hard for the only time in the bottom half of the frame.

The host team only racked up four hits all day, but they all came in the same inning, and combined with a pair of Wolf errors and a passed ball, East Jefferson built a 5-1 lead.

CHS continued to put runners on board but was unable to bring any of them around to score.

Glover rocketed a two-out triple in the fifth, while Trent Thule and Riley Lawless both walked in the sixth, but all to no avail.

Two more Wolf errors and two more East Jefferson runs in the sixth moved the deficit to 7-1, before Coupeville rallied to push a runner across in its final at-bats.

Walks to Roberts and Glover started things off, a Cooper single kept the bags jumpin’, and a fielder’s choice RBI off the bat of Jayden Little scored his team’s second run.

Cooper (5 K’s), Grove (5 K’s), and Roberts (whiffed the only batter he faced) combined to give Coupeville’s pitching staff a second-straight game of 10+ strikeouts.

The Wolves hit the road again this Saturday, traveling to Blaine to makeup a game rained out last weekend.

Diamond men launch new campaign

There’s bound to be some bumps in the road.

After back-to-back trips to the 2B state playoffs, the Coupeville High School baseball squad finds itself in a rebuilding year.

The Wolves have just 11 players total, with four freshmen and two 8th graders, while only three guys in the lineup were letter winners a season ago.

So, Tuesday’s season opener, an 18-0 loss to visiting Meridian, a tough 1A foe with a history of excellence, is not completely unsurprising.

The trick for Steve Hilborn’s very raw Wolf team will be to let things go, learn from the loss, and bounce back quickly with a road trip to Port Townsend to play East Jefferson coming up Thursday afternoon.

The tilt with Meridian was supposed to be game #2 on the season, but a weekend road trip to Blaine was washed away by Mother Nature.

The weather on the prairie was fairly tranquil Tuesday, but the visiting Trojans were a rough and tumble bunch.

Meridian outhit Coupeville 10-1 and took advantage of eight Wolf errors to jump out to a big lead and never look back.

Up 6-0 after the top of the first inning, the Trojans methodically tacked on runs in each frame, forcing the mercy rule to be enacted after the bottom of the fifth.

Coupeville’s best offensive output came in the bottom of the first, but the hometown hardball heroes couldn’t keep a brief rally going.

Senior Landon Roberts lashed a leadoff single, but it would be the only base knock for the Wolves on this day.

Walks to Carson Grove (who was hit by a pitch) and Jayden Little filled the bags, but Meridian escaped without surrendering a run.

Coupeville’s offense sputtered through the next three innings, with the Wolves going 1-2-3 in each frame.

Down to their final at-bats, the Wolves put two runners aboard in the bottom of the fifth, with Phin Rhodes reaching on an error and Roberts eking out a walk, but that was where things ended for CHS.

One definite positive for Coupeville came via the strikeout, as four Wolf hurlers combined to record 13 K’s.

Roberts led the way with six, while Grove whiffed three and Camden Glover and Coop Cooper each recorded two.

Meridian’s other two outs came on fly balls to the outfield, as the Trojans didn’t record a single out on a groundball.

Riley Lawless, Trent Thule, Chris Zenz, Leo Rodriguez, and Jesus Madrigal rounded out the Wolf roster, joining Rhodes in making their CHS baseball debuts.

Blaine rain the main pain

Mother Nature has entered the chat.

The season opener for Coupeville High School baseball was washed away Saturday, as a planned trip to Blaine was called off before the Wolves could hit the road.

The official prognosis: a night of steady rain left the Borderites field unable to host a game.

No word yet on whether the non-conference clash will be rescheduled.

For now, the Wolf diamond men turn their attention to their planned home opener, which is set for Tuesday, Mar. 18.

Meridian is slated to come to Cow Town for that rumble, with the first pitch set for 4:00 PM.

If Mother Nature agrees.
