Sizzlin’ in San Antonio!!

They may never lose again.

Fueled by another breakout performance from sophomore sensation, and Coupeville grad, Makana Stone, the Whitman College women’s basketball squad roared to its ninth-straight win.

The Blues, ranked #8 in NCAA D-III, scorched Schreiner University 93-47 Wednesday in the opening game of the Trinity University Classic in San Antonio.

Now 9-1 on the season, Whitman returns to the floor Thursday to face the tourney hosts.

That should provide a tougher challenge, as Trinity is ranked #19 in the nation.

Wednesday it was all about putting a whuppin’ on the Mountaineers, as Whitman exploded out to a 26-14 lead after one quarter and never slowed down.

Stone went off for 16 points in just 18 minutes, on sweet 8-11 shooting from the floor, while snatching five rebounds and dealing out two assists.

She was one of the sparks which lit Whitman’s fire, tossing in eight of her points in the opening quarter.

The Blues had three gunners crack double-digits scoring, with All-American Casey Poe (18) and Emily Rommel (10) joining Stone.

With the game getting out of hand early, Whitman went to its bench liberally, with none of the Blues starters logging more than 22 minutes.

Through 10 games, Stone leads Whitman with 145 points, while adding 57 rebounds, 21 assists, six steals and a blocked shot.

She is pacing the Blues in field goal percentage at 66%, hitting 63 of 95 shots, while also knocking down 73% (19-26) at the free-throw stripe.

Another day, another honor.

Coupeville High School grad Makana Stone has been busy adding to her trophy room (if she has one) this past week.

After playing two superb games over the weekend for Whitman College, the former Wolf hoops star was tabbed as the MVP of the Whitworth Holiday Classic.

Monday, she picked up another honor, with the Northwest Conference hailing her as its women’s basketball Athlete of the Week.

Stone scored 29 points and hauled down seven rebounds this weekend, as Whitman pounded on Carroll (Mont.) College and Colorado College.

For the season, the sophomore sensation is averaging 14.3 points and 5.8 rebounds a night. She leads the Blues in points, field goal percentage and free throw percentage.

Whitman, which is ranked #7 in the most-recent NCAA D-III poll, is 8-1.

The Blues carry an eight-game winning streak to San Antonio, where they will play in the Trinity University Classic Dec. 20-21.

Hoops get hoppin’!!

The first shots have been fired.

Week two of the basketball season featured the first showdown between Olympic League foes, with Port Townsend and Chimacum getting together for a doubleheader.

The RedHawks and Cowboys split the twin-bill, leaving, for the moment, two different schools atop the very-early league standings.

For Coupeville, it’s all been about non-conference play so far, but that’s about to change.

The Wolves get a taste, but just a taste, of league action Tuesday when they face off with Port Townsend.

Then they don’t return to conference play until Jan. 6.

For the CHS girls, the match-up with the RedHawks gives them an opportunity to kick off a bid for a fourth-straight league title.

The Wolf boys, meanwhile, would like to fire an early warning shot at Port Townsend, which is the defending champs on that side of the ball.

Double your hoops pleasure!!

Winner, winner, chicken dinner for Wolf grads everywhere.

Both of Coupeville’s college basketball-playing whiz kids came away with victories Saturday, while playing in different states.

Makana Stone and Whitman College rolled to a tourney win in Spokane, their eighth-straight triumph.

Meanwhile, out in Pennsylvania, Kailey Kellner and D’Youville College snapped a losing skid and go into a nearly month-long break flush with a conference win.

Stone: 

Whitman, ranked #7 in the most-recent NCAA D-III women’s basketball poll, bounced Colorado College 75-42 to sweep through the Holiday Classic presented by Red Lion River Inn.

The Blues improved to 8-1, and will take a week-and-a-half off before playing in the Trinity University Classic in San Antonio Dec. 20-21.

Saturday, Whitman leaned on All-American Casey Poe and their sophomore sensation, Stone, who made for a very-effective one-two punch.

The duo dropped 14 points apiece, while Stone added four rebounds, four assists and a steal.

After a quick start (Whitman rolled out to an 18-9 bulge after one quarter), the Blues put it on cruise control for the rest of the afternoon.

The second half was a thing of beauty, as Whitman rolled up a 43-18 advantage after the break.

Through nine games, Stone, who was voted tourney MVP for her work this weekend, leads the Blues in scoring, tallying 129 points.

She also has 52 rebounds, 19 assists, six steals and a blocked shot.

A key to her success this season has been her sizzlin’ shooting touch. Stone is hitting 65% from the field, on 55 of 84 shots, and 73% from the free throw line (19-26).

Kellner:

The freshman Spartan snagged two rebounds, as D’Youville held off a furious fourth quarter rally in a 53-50 win at Pittsburgh-Greensburg.

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak and lifts the Spartans to 3-6 overall, 2-1 in league play.

Up by three at the half, D’Youville crushed it in the third, rolling up a 22-9 advantage.

Then, the Spartans almost gave it all back, allowing their hosts to go on a 19-6 run in the fourth which fell just short of a miracle comeback.

D’Youville is now off until Jan. 4.

Through the first nine games of her college career, Kellner has made four starts and is averaging 3.3 points and 2.2 rebounds a night.
