With prom just hours away, the Wolves were already dancing Saturday morning.

Raining down goals from every direction — 10 of them in just the first-half alone — the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad had plenty of chances to skip, twirl, jump into each others arms and cavort across the pitch en route to an 11-4 thrashing of visiting Chimacum.

The lopsided win brought the Wolves to 2-3 in Olympic League play, 5-7-1 overall.

It also helped them clinch third-place in the four-team league (they could still tie Port Townsend record-wise, but the RedHawks own the tiebreaker) and punched their ticket to the playoffs.

Coupeville will play a “home” loser-out game Thursday, May 5 at Oak Harbor High School’s stadium against the #4 team from the Nisqually League (either Bellevue Christian or Seattle Christian).

Win there and they hit the road to play Vashon Island May 7 in another loser-out district game.

Taking advantage of a Cowboy squad that had the minimum 11 players in uniform, none of whom were especially sharp on defense, the Wolves jumped on the board early.

Sophomore Ethan Spark punched in a shot from the right side in the game’s 6th minute, then deflected in another ball less than five minutes later.

Next up was senior scoring leader Abraham Leyva, who notched goals #19 and #20 of the season, with a header and then a spectacular shot on which he slid towards the goalie, before flicking the ball up and over his shoulder.

After that it was a virtual parade of goals, with Zack Nall, Zane Bundy, Andre Avila and William Nelson all finding the back of the net.

In between their scores, Spark, who was having himself quite a day stealing the spotlight on Senior Night, banged home two more goals.

His four scores on the afternoon doubled his season output, broke a tie with Bundy and Nelson, who each have five this season, and made mom Kali Barrio scream at an octave previously not heard.

With the game well in hand, CHS coach Kyle Nelson did his best to keep things competitive while not overly embarrassing Chimacum by either piling on more goals or merely playing keep-away.

With freshman Brian Roberts making his varsity debut in goal, senior Connor McCormick moved out of the net and played up front in the second half, as did some defenders like Cody Menges.

With a mandate that any second-half goals had to be set up by a crossing shot, Coupeville added a final score when Leyva set the ball up perfectly for Menges to knock home.

The game was the final one on the CHS pitch for seniors Jose Marcos, Bundy, Leyva, Menges, Avila, Taylor Chiles, McCormick and Loren Nelson.

Fellow seniors Sebastian Davis, Tanner Kircher, Garrett Compton and Beauman Davis were all out for various reasons, but they and senior manager Sebastian Wurzrainer were also honored before the game in a ceremony narrated by junior booter Nick Dion.

Regroup and rebound.

That’s the plan for the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad, which took a hard hit Thursday but still has a lot left to play for this season.

Falling 6-2 on the pitch in Port Townsend, the Wolves slid to 1-3 in the 1A Olympic League, 4-7-1 overall.

That guarantees them they can finish no higher than third in the four-team league.

Defending champ Klahowya (4-0, 12-1-1) and upstart Port Townsend (3-1, 6-5-1) are still vying for the conference title with two games to go in the regular season, while the Wolves need to hold off Chimacum (0-4, 1-10) if they want the league’s final playoff berth.

They’ll have a perfect opportunity to do that Saturday (11 AM), when they host the Cowboys on Senior Night.

Sweep the season series (Coupeville won 10-1 the first time around) and the Wolves clinch third-place and eliminate Chimacum from post-season contention.

As the #3 seed out of the Olympic League, CHS would travel to face the #2 team from the Nisqually League (likely Vashon Island) Saturday, May 7 in a loser-out district playoff match.

Win that one and they advance to the double-elimination portion of districts and play the Olympic League’s #1 seed May 10.

Facing off with Port Townsend, the Wolves were hoping to battle them as closely as they did in the two team’s first meeting — a 2-1 RedHawk win — but it wasn’t to be.

Sophomores Ethan Spark and Will Nelson each rattled home their fourth goals of the season — Spark’s coming on a header and Nelson’s on a free kick — to pace the Wolf attack.

The duo moved into a tie with senior Zane Bundy for second-place on the team scoring chart, behind Abraham Leyva’s 18 goals.

Ethan Spark

The streak lives.

Abraham Leyva bolted in from the right side midway through the second half Tuesday night, beat Klahowya’s goalie and rattled home the 18th goal of his stellar senior soccer season.

The lone score for Coupeville in a 5-1 loss to an Eagle squad with legitimate dreams of competing for a state title, it kept alive Leyva’s streak of scoring in every game this season.

It also added to what is already a single-season CHS scoring record.

That goal, and several brilliant saves by Wolf goaltender Connor McCormick, who was under fire most of the night, were the highlights in a match that was largely controlled by the visitors.

The loss dropped Coupeville to 1-2 in league play, 4-6-1 overall, and, for the moment, puts them in third place in the 1A Olympic League.

Klahowya (3-0, 11-1-1) is out in front as it tries to defend its league title, with Port Townsend (2-1, 5-5-1) a game up on the Wolves with three to play.

Chimacum (0-3, 1-9) is firmly wedged in the cellar and would be odd man out in a league in which three teams will advance to the postseason this year.

Coupeville travels to Port Townsend Thursday for a crucial match-up with the RedHawks, who beat them 2-1 in their first meeting.

Win and they would move back into a tie for second-place, which is huge, as the #2 team out of the Olympic League will host its opening playoff game.

Facing off with one of the state’s premier 1A teams Tuesday, the Wolves, who were missing five varsity players, including three starters, held their own for a very solid opening 15 minutes.

While the Eagles relentlessly pushed the attack, Coupeville scrambled on defense, kept the ball away from the net as much as possible and gave McCormick a chance.

The senior net-minder made several strong saves (though he saved his best, in which he went airborne and punched a shot away, Superman-style, for the second half) and was fairly spot-on.

But, Klahowya has a team chock-full of precision shooters and they eventually broke through, netting a goal in the 15th minute.

A second shot skittered through in the 26th minute when McCormick got wedged in the middle of a scrum right in front of the net and couldn’t get free, then the Eagles tacked on two more scores right before the half.

Making a solid charge in the second half, Coupeville racked up several shots on goal, with Leyva’s goal being the one that found the back of the net, but while Klahowya’s defense bent a bit, it rarely broke.

When he's not fighting for

Andre Avila (left) tallied his first varsity goal in the 10-1 win.

Circle Apr. 30 on your calendar.

That’s when the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad hosts Chimacum, and, if recent history is any indication, it will offer local fans a chance to blast their vuvuzela horns non-stop.

If that’s still a thing..

Oh, it’s not?

Well, it should be.

Facing off with the Cowboys Thursday in Chimacum, the Wolves kept their streak alive, raining down double digits in goals every time the programs have played.

This time out, it finished 10-1 (with Chimacum chipping in with two own goals), after Coupeville scored 11 and 13 last year.

The victory, the fourth in the last five games for the suddenly-surging Wolves, lifts them to 1-1 in 1A Olympic play, 4-5-1 overall.

It slides them into a second-place tie with Port Townsend (also exactly 1-1, 4-5-1), a game off of defending league champs Klahowya (2-0, 9-1-1), which travels to Whidbey Tuesday, Apr. 26.

Chimacum (0-2, 1-8), as you might expect, is firmly in the cellar.

While the two own goals by the Cowboys would have been enough for a narrow Coupeville win, the Wolves decided to help things along by raining down a parade of their own scores, as well.

Abraham Leyva punched in three, giving him 17 on the season.

That breaks the single-season scoring record of 14 goals he set just a year ago, and keeps an amazing streak going.

Leyva has found the back of the net in all 10 games this season.

He got plenty of help from running mate Zane Bundy, who did a bit of everything.

Bundy tallied two goals, doubling his season output to four, and also rang up a season-high four assists.

Coupeville’s other scores came from William Nelson and Ethan Spark, who both connected for the third time this year, and senior Andre Avila, who notched his first varsity goal.

Nelson had two assists, while Leyva, Avila and Cody Menges each set up a score.

The rout gave Coupeville a chance to try out some new looks, which always makes a coach happy.

“Was a good win for us, and gave us a chance to play a number of JV players in a varsity game, since there was no JV game,” said Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson. “Great experience for our younger players, who stepped in and did a great job.”
