Turning pain into positivity

Family and friends of Brandon Graham, a 2007 Coupeville High School grad who died last summer, are starting a foundation to assist others.

The goal is to “honor Brandon by bringing awareness of suicide to the community, so no other family must go through the pain Brandon’s family has gone through.”

The foundation, which is being started by Coupeville grads Debbie Vescovi and Michelle Armstrong, will offer support for Coupeville and Oak Harbor schools, with a focus on mental health awareness, suicide prevention, and anti-bullying efforts.

Money raised will be used to provide resources for students and training for teachers and parents, with an emphasis on bringing together local law enforcement, chaplains, and motivational speakers to assist.

Foundation organizers are launching things with a fundraiser Aug. 6.

A luau dinner and silent auction is set for the Nordic Lodge in Coupeville (63 Jacobs Rd.), with things starting at 4 PM.

Tickets are limited and can be obtained either in person at Polished Studio in Oak Harbor (861 SE Pioneer Way) or by emailing thebrandongrahamfoundation@gmail.com.

Cost is $30 for single admission, or $50 for a couple.

The plan is to make the dinner a yearly fundraiser.

The foundation is also in the process of obtaining 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and will launch a website where people can donate to the ongoing work.

“Mental health wellness needs to be a number one priority for our children,” foundation organizers said in a statement.

“We, as a community, can provide our youth with tools to be able to work through the problems they have, and know that the community has their back.”

Wildcats (and friends) tee it up

Some tee shots, a few divots, and a whole lot of purple.

Whidbey Golf Club was hoppin’ Saturday, as Oak Harbor High School’s athletic department held its big fundraiser for the year.

The event drew a lot of Wildcats, a handful of Coupeville duffers, and wanderin’ photographer John Fisken, who kept his camera clickin’ all day.

Help ease family’s burden

Time moves on, but some people remain with you forever.

After Videoville and Miriam’s Espresso went away, I saw a lot less of most people that I worked with there.

We all found different paths — some here on Whidbey, others far away.

But we remain connected by our time spent together in the store, and while I may have seen Wendy (Frost) Mikos just a handful of times since 2006, she has never been far from my thoughts.

Wendells is one of the special ones, a warm-hearted, whip-smart young woman who was one of Coupeville’s favorite baristas as she navigated high school and college.

Yes, she once spread Crisco over every inch of my car — effectively “winning” a store-wide prank war in savage fashion.

And yet, I still snuck down to the store at 5 AM to clock her in on the computer on days when she struggled to break free from the comforts of her bed.

Wendy is one of the loveliest human beings to grace this world, so, while managers aren’t supposed to play favorites, of course I did.

The day she married her high school sweetheart, Matt Mikos, was a win for all involved.

He was always, for want of a better description, a righteous dude, and seeing them grow together, eventually building a family of six, made my heart happy.

The news of Matt’s sudden passing, at age 38, is a shock.

Wendy’s children, who range in age from 11 to nine months, have lost a huge part of their lives, as she has also.

The coming days, months, and years will not be easy to navigate, but, with the help of family and friends, I hope they find some peace.

In the moment, every bit of support from the community helps.

Wendy’s brother, Tad, has set up a GoFundMe to ease some of the immediate financial burden, and I hope, if you’re able, you consider helping.

Step up for Sarah Leavell

A Wolf Mom is in need.

Sarah Leavell, whose daughters Anya and Kaitlyn are scholar/athletes at Coupeville High School, has been diagnosed with breast cancer at age 38 and faces an uphill battle.

While the cancer was detected early, she may require multiple rounds of chemotherapy, as well as surgery.

Along with always being in the stands for her daughter’s games, Sarah has worked for a decade at The Seaside Spa & Salon.

Her boss, Aaron Wiley, has launched a GoFundMe to allow the community to reach out and help the Leavell family, which also includes husband Joshua (and his truly remarkable beard).

“While Sarah’s team of doctors are optimistic, there is no doubt that she is facing the fight of her life,” Wiley said.

“Now, if you know Sarah, you know she has a quiet strength and determination that does not quit until the job is done.

“She lives her life like that and will be treating this cancer journey the same way. She’s not going to quit.”

The GoFundMe will help cover medical bills, gas to get back and forth to doctor appointments, and Sarah’s loss of income.

“Please help lift her spirits,” Wiley said. “Relieve some of the stress, so she can focus on what she needs to … beating cancer!”
