“Hand model comin’ through. Don’t touch the merchandise, sister!!”

"I'm just gonna sit here for a while.

“That’s it! I’m just gonna sit here for a while until you all stop stealing the ball from me!!”

They are a scrappy bunch.

As much as they love their photo ops, the Coupeville High School girls’ hoops stars love nothing more than thoroughly beatin’ the crud out of any hapless foe who dares to try and touch a basketball that the Wolf player already had their eye on.

Whether it be a rebound, a steal or a battle for a loose ball — all depicted in the photos above — the Wolves are a pack of marauders let loose.

Which is why both the varsity and JV have winning records and are (by far) the most successful hoops squads on Whidbey Island once again this winter.

Courtney Arnold Kayla Rose

“You can mess with Texas … just not with Miss Rose. She will cut a girl, figuratively speaking.”

"Yoinks!!"

Lauren Rose (22) launches Operation Turnover. ETA — 0.3 seconds.

hhhh

“TOLD YA!!”

The second most radiant person in Coupeville High School cheer squad history is back in town for a few days.

No one is ever likely to take down the Queen herself, former Wolf coach Sylvia Arnold, when it comes to dispensing sunshine out of every pore.

BUT, if someone ever does, it’ll likely be daughter Courtney, former CHS cheer captain extraordinaire.

The living embodiment of joy, junior division, has a few days off from her senior year of college, so she’s been hitting basketball games at her old stomping grounds.

Leaving behind her a trail of never-ending hugs to one and all, Courtney has also found time to support and good-naturedly harass the next generation of Wolves.

The pics above capture her with the Rose sisters, Lauren and Kayla, as she acts like a proud mama shepherding (and roughing up) her flock.

Try and find a bigger, brighter, happier smile. I dare you.

Brisa Herrera

Kailey

Kailey Kellner continued her season-long streak of torrid shooting, dropping in a game-high 15.

The night started off beautifully.

While the varsity game would turn out to be an apathetic disaster, the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball squad looked impressive during their time on the court Wednesday.

Busting out an 11-0 second quarter that sealed the deal, the Wolves strolled past visiting Friday Harbor 38-20 in a game that wasn’t even remotely close.

Twice stretching the lead out as far as 21 points, a much-more aggressive Coupeville squad (now 4-3) benefited from having a confident trio at the forefront of its attack.

Lauren Rose, in the lineup for the first time this season, pumped in eight points in the first half, continually harassing timid Friday Harbor ball-handlers into turnovers.

Then the second half became the Kailey Kellner Show, as the sophomore shooting sensation banged home 14 of her game-high 15 after the break.

She hit three consecutive jumpers in the third to spark a 10-0 run, then swished four more buckets during an 8-2 streak in the fourth.

After almost all of her buckets, she punctuated the made shot with a slight downward wave of her fingertips as the ball hit the bottom of the net, honoring a tradition dear to the heart of all stone cold killers masquerading as outside bombers.

Helping set up the duo was Lauren Grove, who was charged up on defense and nimbly set up numerous fast breaks for the Wolves, who set the pace and never allowed Friday Harbor to get comfortable.

The visitors stayed close for a quarter, trailing just 6-4 after the opening eight minutes.

Then the Wolves picked up the intensity and broke the will of their opponents, holding them scoreless for an entire quarter.

Rose hit for three baskets, two on set-ups from Grove, while the biggest fan cheer went to Brisa Herrera, who banked home her first bucket of the season to cap the run.

Coupeville spread the offensive love around, with six of the eight players who suited getting into the scoring column.

Kellner was backed by Rose (8), Grove (6), Kyla Briscoe (4), Skyler Lawrence (3) and Herrera (2).

Allison Wenzel and Tiffany Briscoe failed to score, but both chipped in with stellar efforts on defense, with Wenzel rising up to swat away a shot as her braided ponytail whipped through the air like Indiana Jones‘ bullwhip.

David King (John Fisken photo)

This photo was shot at a different game, but CHS coach David King wore this expression most of the game Wednesday. (John Fisken photo)

If Saturday was the party, Wednesday was the hangover.

Playing more like a team already on vacation and less like a team returning to the court after pulling off the biggest come-from-behind victory in recent memory, the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad laid an egg against visiting Friday Harbor.

All the positive energy from the weekend upset of 2A Sequim oozed out the gym door as the Wolves staggered through a listless 24-19 non-conference loss that dropped their record to 4-3.

It wasn’t so much that they played badly as they just didn’t do anything all that right.

In a game devoid of excitement — Friday Harbor played like a team quite willing to be rolled, only to find the Wolves surprisingly toothless on this night — the victor was the team who played just slightly less uninspired.

Even after suffering through a seven-minute scoreless stretch in the second half, while getting off precious few shots as they routinely made one pass too many and seemed to have no one willing to step up, CHS had a shot at the end.

Putting together what passed for a rally, the Wolves scored five straight midway through the fourth to cut the lead to 19-18.

Julia Myers banked in a bucket off of an in-bounds pass, Kacie Kiel swished a short jumper and Makana Stone slid a free-throw through the twine.

But, after her second charity stripe shot slid around the rim before falling off at the last second — a team-wide issue as Coupeville shot less than 20% from the field in the game — the Wolves offense was done.

Friday Harbor rolled in a desperation three-point bomb, followed by a basket off of an inside cut, to stretch the lead back out and the Wolves answered with … nothing.

Over the final minute — the time where they had played so brilliantly against Sequim — they came up empty.

Back-to-back shots hit nothing but air, never even grazing the rim, and Coupeville coach David King, who was poised to call timeouts after buckets to set up a defensive plan, could do little but softly shake his head.

The sputter at the end matched the flow of the entire game, as the two squads combined for an apathetic performance that was odd considering both teams entered the game with winning records.

The first half started muted and stayed that way, with the teams tied at four after one and Coupeville clinging to a 10-8 lead at the half.

A lone highlight came from Myers, who, showing why she is a defensive dynamo, rose up and rejected a Friday Harbor shot with not one, but both, hands.

The booming no-no-no briefly sent a surge through the crowd and her team, but then, as soon as it surfaced, it was gone.

Neither team could do anything in the third quarter, going three-and-a-half minutes into the half without adding a single point to the scoreboard.

Friday Harbor finally flipped a switch, running off an 8-0 stretch to essentially put the game on ice.

Coupeville didn’t score until the 1:02 mark in the quarter, and then only when McKenzie Bailey had a prayer answered when she banked in a three-pointer from the side.

Stone, who entered the game averaging almost 16 points a game, paced the Wolves with six, while snagging 12 rebounds. She also had three blocks and three steals.

The rest of Coupeville’s limited offensive attack came from Hailey Hammer (4), Bailey (3), Myers (2), Kiel (2) and Monica Vidoni (2).

Myers had eight rebounds while Kiel collected three assists.

The Wolves will get a chance to rediscover their spark Friday, when they travel to Orcas Island for a non-conference game. After that, they are off until Dec. 29, when Vashon Island visits Whidbey.

This is Kacie Kiel. She is faster than the rest of you. She has my money. Game over, man, game over.

free

The small print.

These free throws are not free, but they are for a good cause.

The Coupeville High School girls’ basketball team is holding a Shoot-A-Thon fundraiser over Christmas break, with each Wolf player taking 100 shots from behind the charity stripe.

CHS fans are being asked to pledge, either per made free throw or a total amount they would be willing to pay for the effort.

Which means Wolf players, varsity and JV, will be coming after your wallet in the days to come.

To which I say:

I PLEDGED TO KACIE KIEL!! SHE GOT TO ME FIRST, SHE WINS!! MOVE ALONG!!!!

Anyway, you should think about supporting the cause, in whatever manner your wallet can handle.

The money directly benefits the best hoops squad in the land (seriously, the Wolf girls have the best record of any Olympic League team, 1A or 2A), plus it helps the Coupeville players work on their accuracy from the line.

Having seen a few games last year where free throws killed the Wolves, paying them to practice is money well spent.
