Fall sports is on the stage.

The start of school is still several days away, but Coupeville High School cracked the seal on the 2016-2017 sports year Thursday, sending its girls’ soccer squad to Oak Harbor for a four-team jamboree.

While there the Wolves beat 1A rival South Whidbey 1-0 and fell 3-0 to their 3A Wildcat hosts. Lake Stevens rounded out the quartet.

They kicked things off with a bang.

Ushering in the 2016-2017 prep sports year, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer team went into jamboree play Thursday with a thin roster, yet emerged happy with the results.

Despite only having 11 eligible players (four of them freshmen) as everyone scrambles to get enough practices in, the Wolves beat arch-rival South Whidbey and held their own for much of the game with host Oak Harbor.

Sparring with the Falcons, who they will meet in the regular season opener (Sept. 8 in Coupeville), the CHS booters pulled off a dazzling goal en route to a 1-0 win.

Junior captain Sage Renninger crushed the ball which deflated the heart of South Whidbey’s defense, but the play was first set-up by a wild back-and-forth passing effort.

Lindsey Roberts dropped a dead-eye pass to Kalia Littlejohn, who worked a give-and-go with freshman Avalon Renninger.

With the ball back on her foot, Littlejohn, “who impressed the whole crowd with some unbelievable ball skills that would have made David Copperfield blush!!” according to coach Troy Cowan, set up Renninger.

Sage drove a ball that never hit the ground into the back of the net like a Scud missile!!!,” wailed the happily-hyperventilating coach.

Facing off with Oak Harbor, a much-bigger 3A squad, the scrappy 1A Wolves mixed their lineup around and got valuable pitch time for their younger players.

While Coupeville fell 3-0, it showed off “an awesome display of perseverance and never die soccer.”

Cowan hailed the play of veteran Mia Littlejohn, who “consistently made runs and initiated our counterattacks” and fleet-footed frosh Mallory Kortuem, who sizzled in her high school debut.

Capping the night was the performance of sophomore Ema Smith in goal.

“I would be remiss if I didn’t say our jamboree MVP would be Ema,” Cowan said. “This courageous young lady donned the goalie jersey for the very first time in her young career and with really one day to practice!!!

“Well done Ema, you did a terrific job!”

Ema Smith

Sophomore Ema Smith is ready for a big second season.

One step from the top.

After back-to-back second-place finishes in the 1A Olympic League, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad wants to make the big push necessary to upend Klahowya.

“We want to win a title and get our soccer banner up into the gym,” said determined Wolf coach Troy Cowan.

Coupeville is coming off a season when it went 6-7-3 (tying the program record for wins), 4-2 in league.

The Wolves fell 2-0 to Vashon Island in the playoffs, the second straight season the Pirates ended Coupeville’s postseason dreams.

After several seasons of working with predominantly young teams, the CHS coaching staff has some grizzled vets to lean on in 2016.

“Hard to believe, but finally I can say experience and toughness,” Cowan said, when asked about his team’s strengths.

While he lost four-year starter Jenn Spark and fleet-footed Kirsten Pelroy to graduation, virtually everyone else, including the best single-season scorer in program history, is back.

That’s sophomore Kalia Littlejohn, who found the back of the net 10 times her first go-around, often set up by older sister Mia, now a junior.

The pair, who were both First Team All-League picks, lead a pack of veteran players back to the pitch.

Senior Lauren Grove, fresh off a dominating performance at the state track meet in the spring, is back for a second season as the team’s starting goaltender.

“I expect her to have a fantastic year in the box,” Cowan said.

Other big-timers include senior midfielders Bree Daigneault and May Rose, junior midfielder Sage Renninger, junior defenders Mckenzie Meyer and Lauren Bayne and sophomore defender Lindsey Roberts.

Supplementing the returning players is a strong batch of incoming freshman, some of whom could play key roles right off the bat.

“I am really excited to see what Avalon Renninger, Sage’s little sister, can bring,” Cowan said. “I am hopeful she can make an immediate impact with the team.

Tia Wurzrainer, Mallory Kortuem. Megan Thorn has also had a very impressive camp as well.”

Whichever players end up on the pitch, the Wolf coaches want to see them take the next step in their evolution.

“We are always working on transition and possession,” Cowan said. “To meet our goals we will need to improve both these categories.”

After playing six league games in each of the first two seasons in the Olympic League, Coupeville will see that number jump to nine this year.

That brings soccer even with other sports like basketball, softball, baseball and volleyball.

That means three games apiece against Port Townsend, Chimacum and Klahowya.

The Wolves are a combined 7-1-1 against the first two foes, but 0-4 against the Eagles, who won a state title in 2014, before being knocked out in the first round of state last year.

Coupeville opens its season at a four-team jamboree in Oak Harbor this Thursday (6 PM), along with Lake Stevens and South Whidbey.

The season’s first “real” game is set for Sept. 8, when the Wolves host South Whidbey in a non-conference tilt.

Sage Renninger: She's kind of a big deal. (John Fisken photos)

Sage Renninger: She’s kind of a big deal. (John Fisken photos)

Ready since day one.

Sage Renninger, who will be a junior at Coupeville High School this year, has been at the forefront of Wolf athletics since her very first day as a freshman.

From the moment she stepped on the soccer pitch and tennis court to rep the red and black, Renninger, who also happens to celebrate a birthday today, has been a leader.

Sage is not a screamer, but her teammates gravitate to her anyway.

She leads by example, by busting her rear on every play, regardless of the score, and by projecting a calm coolness at all times, which always centers those around her.

Renninger’s coaches recognize this rare talent, having given her leadership responsibilities and captain honors at a fairly young age.

That she always responds to the added scrutiny, raising her own game, and helping her teammates lift their own, is a testament to her strength and drive.

Renninger is skilled (she’s a natural athlete, also superb as a runner and, back in the day, a hoops star), she is committed and she is classy.

She’s also smart as a tack, a fixture on the school’s honor roll, and seems to be universally well-liked by all those around her.

A pro at being caring to those she holds close in real life, while also being able to drop the boom on any fool who would dare invade her territory during competition, Sage is a winner, in every way.

So, as she celebrates her cake day, with a season-opening soccer jamboree in sight, we just want to take a quick moment to congratulate her on being supremely awesome and wish her all the best.

Happy birthday, Miss Renninger. May the best be yet to come.

Lauren Grove

The start of a new season brings a smile to Wolf goalie Lauren Grove’s face.

They can wander, but the beautiful game always calls them home.

As summer winds down, the Coupeville High School booters are back it, prepping for a new season and another run at Klahowya.

Coming off of back-to-back second-place finishes in the 1A Olympic League, the young ‘n hungry Wolves are eyeing the top prize this season.

To get there, they’ll have to put in work, which is why they were toiling away under the sunshine Wednesday, when wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken strolled by, camera in hand.
