The sun will come out tomorrow, or maybe today if you wait long enough.

Getting the better of Mother Nature and weather forecasters alike Tuesday, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad managed to get its match played at South Whidbey.

And while the Wolves ultimately fell 4-1 to the perennial powerhouse Falcons, it was the first on-court action against a rival for CHS in two weeks.

Better to play the best and get tested than sit on the sidelines.

Now 1-3 on the season, with all of its losses coming to bigger schools, Coupeville will try and make it two Island rivalry duels in one week.

South Whidbey is slated to travel to Central Whidbey Friday, allowing the 2B Wolves and 1A Falcons to finish off their non-conference home-and-away clash for 2023.

After that, CHS plays Friday Harbor — the only other Northwest 2B/1B League foe which fields a tennis program — three straight times.

Tuesday’s results:

1st Singles — Helen Strelow beat Baylie Kuschnereit 6-1, 6-0

2nd Singles — Djina Radenovic lost to Carlie Kuschnereit 6-2, 6-1

1st Doubles — Hayley Fiedler/Vivian Farris lost to Pearl Buck/Mikaela Nelson 6-0, 6-0

2nd Doubles — Skylar Parker/Lucy Tenore lost to Cate Beech/Katya Schiavone 6-1, 6-4

3rd Doubles — Kaitlyn Leavell/Brynn Parker lost to Natalie Olson/Alyssa Staats 6-0, 6-0

The dance continues.

Keeping a tennis schedule in place during “spring” is always a tricky game, and 2023 is no exception.

Friday’s scheduled home match between Coupeville and Friday Harbor has been postponed because of weather, as liquid sunshine returns to the weather scene.

The match, which is a rumble between Northwest 2B/1B League foes, will be rescheduled, said Coupeville Athletic Director Willie Smith.

As the schedule sits now, the Wolves will be off for a bit, with spring break bearing down.

Currently, CHS is set to return to action Tuesday, Apr. 11 with a road trip to South Whidbey.

Dangerously close.

Facing off with 1A Granite Falls Monday, the 2B Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad came within a handful of points of toppling the Tigers.

But, for the second time in as many matches this season, the Wolves were edged 3-2 by their bigger school rivals.

The non-conference road loss drops Coupeville to 1-2 on the year, with a home match against Northwest 2B/1B League foe Friday Harbor set for this Friday, Mar. 31.

Mother Nature willing.

Monday’s match featured wins by #1 singles ace Helen Strelow and #1 doubles duo Hayley Fiedler and Vivian Farris, with all three Wolf seniors getting to a pristine 3-0 on the campaign.

The sun is out in Coupeville, but no tennis balls will fly in Langley Thursday afternoon.

The girls’ tennis rumble between the Wolves and host South Whidbey has been postponed, and CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith will look to reschedule.

Coupeville, which is 1-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play and 1-1 overall, has two matches scheduled for next week.

The Wolves travel to Granite Falls Monday, Mar. 27, then host Friday Harbor Mar. 31.

The score remains 0-0 Thursday afternoon. Or 1-0, in favor of Mother Nature. (Lucy Tenore photo)

Advantage, Coupeville.

The Wolf girls’ tennis team went island-hopping Tuesday and pulled out a 3-2 win against archrival Friday Harbor in the first of four meetings between the Northwest 2B/1B League rivals.

The match was knotted at 2-2 when Lucy Tenore and Skylar Parker teamed up to win a fierce fight at second doubles.

With the victory, Coupeville gets to 1-0 in league play, 1-1 overall, with a non-conference road match at South Whidbey set for Thursday.

Friday Harbor and CHS are the only schools in the seven-team NWL to field tennis programs, and the Wolverines and Wolves will clash three more times this season.

Coupeville is slated to host matches Mar. 31 and Apr. 21, then will hop back on the ferry May 2.
