Christine Fields

Christine Fields

You cannot contain the Fields.

You cannot beat the Fields.

You can only hope they don’t embarrass you so badly you give up golfing.

And frankly, at this point, every other golfer in sight might need to think about taking up knitting or rock climbing, because Austin and Christine Fields are scorching the Earth, one beautifully-placed shot at a time.

Austin, a senior at Coupeville High School, has been the medalist in all three matches he’s played in, and with her win Thursday in Sultan, Christine, a Wolf sophomore, is a perfect 2-for-2.

Playing with her traveling and training compadres from South Whidbey, Fields scored a sizzlin’ 30 in modified Stableford scoring over nine holes at Blue Boy Golf and Country Club.

Her closest competitor was Sultan’s Hannah Pretice at 23. The host Turks fell to the Falcons 81-67, though, as South Whidbey had more balanced scoring.

As a one-woman wrecking crew, Fields was not involved in the team scoring. She was too busy mentally singing along to “We are the Champions” to care.

Spring Break is almost in the books.

School starts back up in Coupeville Monday, and, with the return to the classroom comes a full-bore return to the athletic fields (if it stops raining).

The weather forecast shows sun tomorrow, when CHS kicks off a busy week with three home games in the same day.

Baseball, softball and boys’ soccer are all set to play host, with the Wolves starting a three-game diamond set with league leader Archbishop Thomas Murphy. On the other side of the road, the softball sluggers get a second crack at Island rival South Whidbey.

Both games throw their first pitch at 4 PM.

Across town, the booters will look for their first win of the season against King’s. JV kicks off at 4, varsity at 6.

Girls’ tennis returns Tuesday, with a trip to Granite Falls. Home matches are set for Thursday (Chimacum) and Friday (Lakewood).

Track and golf get back in the swing of things Thursday with trips to Sultan.

Austin Fields, 3-0 in his senior campaign, takes a moment to talk to Tiger Woods about how to fix his game.

Wolf golf ace Austin Fields, unbeaten in his senior campaign, takes a moment to talk to Tiger Woods about how to tweak his game.

There are a lot of photos out there, but a few give you pause.

The two above, featuring a pair of Coupeville High School’s best athletes, are just the sort of eye-catching material you need to start the day.

One shows a young golfer meeting the best in the game, while the other shows the start of a comeback by a Wolf first-baseman with a great sense of humor, even as he faces the loss of his season.

Asked if I could run his photo, Brian Norris responded, “Does a bear sh** in the woods, David?! Yes, you may run it. Run it like Mr. Smith runs the baseball team when he is angry!”

Done and done.

The only way you beat Austin Fields this season — ship him out of town.

Back on the Island by popular demand after a trip to see Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods and the creme de la creme of the golf world, the Coupeville High School senior picked up right where he left off.

Atop the leader board.

Playing his third match of the season, Fields fired a 79 Thursday at the Cedarcrest Golf and Country Club to earn medalist honors for the third consecutive time.

He edged Lakewood’s Christian Case by a stroke, while finishing a solid 10 shots ahead of the best from his traveling companions from South Whidbey. The Falcons trounced the host Cougars 470-529 in the team standings.

Fields? He doesn’t need a team. He’s a one-man wrecking crew.

Fun fact. No Coupeville High School sports team has lost at home this spring.

Baseball, softball and girls’ tennis are all 2-0 in games played in town, while track and boys’ soccer have yet to compete on their home turf.

Overall, the Wolves are 10-5, with undefeated tennis (3-0) and softball (2-0) squads joining CHS golfers Austin and Christine Fields (a combined 3-0).

Baseball is 2-2 with back-to-back wins and soccer … well, the booters (0-3) have been a bit snake-bit so far, with a pair of 1-0 losses in which tying goals were thwarted by dastardly means (a huge muddle, an extraordinary save by a goalie).

Track doesn’t have the numbers to compete for meet titles with the mostly 2A squads that 1A Coupeville faces, but freshman Makana Stone is 10-0 so far in sprints and relay races.
