Whidbey's best (Austin Fields) meets golf's greatest (Arnold Palmer).

Read the man's lips. He's saying "You ... are ... the chosen one."

Read the man’s lips. He’s saying “You … are … the chosen one.” I’m 71.4% sure of that!

The torch has been passed.

Far away from the snow on Whidbey, Coupeville High School senior golfer Austin Fields and his dad, pro linksman Mike Fields, are in Orlando, Florida for the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

As part of the festivities, Fields got to meet the greatest player in the history of the sport (yeah, you heard me the first time, Nicklaus!).

Rumors that Palmer whispered “You are the chosen one” to the Wolf golfer, who is undefeated so far this year, are just that, rumors.

Very, very believable rumors. But rumors.

Left to right, Austin, Christine and Mike Fields. Their family business: thumping you on the golf course.

You don’t beat the Wolves in golf. You just don’t.

We’re three matches in to a new season and it’s three wins for the Fabulous Fields Family.

Following hot on the footsteps of older brother Austin (2-for-2 this year) Coupeville High School sophomore Christine Fields tore up the course at Useless Bay Golf and Country Club Tuesday afternoon.

Playing nine holes and using modified Stableford scoring, Fields rang up a 28 — way, way, way out in front of the best South Whidbey and Lakewood could offer.

While both those schools have full teams, they offered little resistance to the Lone Wolf. Chelsea Schultz was the runner-up with a 22, helping the host Falcons beat the Cougars in team scoring.

"Listen up, gentlemen, as I tell you a tale of the world's most awesome golfer. Spoiler alert ... it's me!!"

Coupeville only needs one player to kick your butt.

Austin Fields 2, private school golfers 0.

Kicking off his senior year in dramatic fashion, Coupeville High School’s lone male golfer won his second straight tourney Monday afternoon.

Making it sweeter, he not only beat all of his training partners from South Whidbey, but he crushed the dreams of the upper crust as well, spanking the best King’s could throw at him.

At this rate, the only golfer with a chance to take him down might be younger sister Christine. The sophomore Wolf kicks her season off this week.

The elder Fields fired a 58 over 12 holes, the only player in a field of 21 varsity players (from five schools) to crack 60.

K.C. Spencer of Granite Falls and Jeffrey Coats of King’s were the closest to the Lone Wolf, finishing two strokes behind the unflappable one.

"That's just how we do it in the 'Ville, gentlemen."

“That’s just how we do it in the ‘Ville, gentlemen.”

Who needs teammates?

Making his season debut Thursday, the one-man wrecking crew that is the Coupeville High School boys’ golf team — Austin Fields — crushed all of his rivals, and it wasn’t close.

Carding a 39 over nine holes at Jackson Park, Fields was three strokes better than any golfer King’s could throw at him and five strokes ahead of the best of his traveling companions from South Whidbey.

Playing with pin-point precision, he threw down the gauntlet with a three on the third hole, while most of the competition settled for six or seven strokes on the hole.

From there he rolled, not allowing the soggy conditions to deter him from laying down a beat-down.

The Lone Wolf howls tonight!

In less than 200 hours, the Coupeville High School baseball team will defend its home diamond for the first time this season.

Friday, March 15 is the date, 4 PM is the start time, Lakewood is the opponent, in case you were wondering.

But even before then, spring sports will kick into gear. The first action of the new season (barring a lot of rain, of course) is Tuesday, March 12, when the girls’ tennis and boys’ soccer squads travel to Friday Harbor.

The next day, Archbishop Thomas Murphy comes to the Island as the Wolf netters play the first home event of spring.

After that the home debuts roll in, with baseball and softball (Tuesday, March 19 against South Whidbey). Boys’ soccer plays its first three matches on the road, but finally comes home to play South Whidbey Tuesday, March 26.

Track and field? Yeah…

With only one home meet (Thursday, April 18 against South Whidbey), track fans will have to cool their heels for a bit. Or learn to drive a lot.
