After 33 years, Island Greens in Clinton will no longer be available for local golfers.

It’s the final round for one of Whidbey Island’s unsung sports gems.

Island Greens, a nine-hole golf course which has operated in Clinton since 1987, has been sold, and the new owners are planning to close down operations.

The news came via an announcement on the business’s Facebook page Thursday:

We regret to inform our community that Island Greens has sold.

From what we know the new owners are not going to keep the golf course operational.

Island Greens will lock up the gate at the end of the day on the 23 of August.

We would like to thank the people who supported the golf course and we wish you all the best.

Any questions you might have call 360-579-6042.

Island Greens offers the only public driving range on South Whidbey, and the nine-hole course, a fun, and challenging series of par-threes, operates dawn to dusk, with payments taken on the honor system.

Back in my Videoville days, there were several of us who golfed, and I played the course numerous times, always enjoying it.

Their Facebook page put it best:

Huge majestic trees, winding hills, ponds, wet lands and wild life.

Island Greens is known for its challenging nature. Narrow fairways and small greens challenge the advanced golfer as well as the beginner.

Perfect for working on your short game or just coming out to enjoy nature at its finest.

Island Greens is about having fun.

It will be missed.

Jacquie Vincent sends her ball towards the hole.

One shot to win the Masters, and save the world. Or at least liven up the day.

John Fisken has been let out of the house.

The intrepid photographer is back to his wandering ways, and Thursday his travels took him to the Whidbey Golf Club in Oak Harbor.

While there he captured some pics of duffers taking advantage of sunny weather, and slightly-relaxed pandemic restrictions.

Bennett Boyles

Thousands of dollars were raised last weekend at the 3rd annual Bennett Boyles Memorial Golf Tournament, continuing to spread the impact the former Coupeville resident has had on his town.

Put on by the Penn Cove Brewing Company, the event raises money for the WhidbeyHealth Foundation’s Pediatric Rehabilitation Services.

Money will also go to scholarships which the Foundation for Coupeville Public Schools will bestow on graduates of the CHS Class of 2022.

Boyles, who passed away after a long fight with cancer, was a vital part of that class.

He was a key member on Coupeville SWISH basketball teams, and one of his former teammates, Hawthorne Wolfe, continues to wear Bennett’s jersey number on his shoes while playing for CHS.

This year’s tourney was held at the Whidbey Golf Club in Oak Harbor, with close to 80 duffers participating.

A team repping Savi Bank won the tourney title, edging out 16 other groups.

This is the third year duffers tee off at the Bennett Boyles Memorial Golf Tournament. (Mitch Aparicio photo)

The early bird gets a better deal.

Registration is open for the 3rd annual Bennett Boyles Memorial Golf Tournament, and, if you get your ducks in a row before July 31, you’ll save some big bucks.

Cost is $100 per player until the first cut-off, then increases to $125 between Aug. 1-24, before hopping to $150 between Aug. 25 and the tourney itself, which goes down Sept. 21.

The event, held at the Whidbey Golf Club, benefits the WhidbeyHealth Foundation, and has raised $11,000 through the first two years.

Put on by Penn Cove Brewing Co. owners Mitch and Marc Aparicio, the tourney honors a late Coupeville Middle School student/athlete who courageously battled against Glioblastoma multiforme.

If you’re not a golfer, you can still help remember Bennett and help in the fight against cancer by being a sponsor or donating.

Charity brought out the duffers.

The 3rd annual Bennett Boyles Memorial Golf Tournament drew a field of 80+ players, while raising $8,000 for The WhidbeyHealth Foundation.

Played at the Whidbey Golf Club, the event, run by the Penn Cove Brewing Company, honored Boyles, a Coupeville Middle School student who passed away in 2017 after an intensive battle with cancer.

The tourney was held in late September, marking what would have been the young basketball star’s 14th birthday.

Money raised goes to support local cancer patients and their families.

With 13 teams vying for the trophy, “He’s With Us,” a foursome comprised of Traci Winn, Laurie Leonetti, Maryanne Kirkland and Marty Winn claimed top honors.

The event was created, and is run, by brothers Marc and Mitch Aparicio, with Lucienne Rivera, Heather Zustiak, Helen Taylor, Shelly Russell, Tami Aparicio and Walton Beverage helping keep things moving forward.
