Big putts, big hearts!!

Tee it up for a good cause.

The Penn Cove Brewing Company is back at it, planning for the 3rd Annual Bennett Boyles Memorial Golf Fundraiser.

The event, which will be held Sept. 29 at the Whidbey Golf Club in Oak Harbor, is named in honor of a Coupeville Middle School basketball star who lost a courageous fight with cancer.

Proceeds from the day are donated to the WhidbeyHealth Foundation and are used to assist Whidbey Island families.

If you sign up before Aug. 19, it’s $100 per player. After that date, registration kicks up to $125.

Your day includes a box lunch, green fees, cart rental, prizes and use of the practice facilities.

Event organizers are also looking for individuals or businesses who would be interested in sponsoring holes.

To sign up, swing by the Penn Cove Taproom at 103 S. Main in Coupeville.

   He’s paying his way to college by collecting and reselling golf balls. At least that’s the rumor.

Every swing was a winner.

Whether they were setting up for an eagle or spending time chasing their ball through the brush, local golfers came together this past weekend to raise $2,800 for the WhidbeyHealth Foundation.

The Bennett Boyles Memorial Golf Tournament, put on by Mitch and Marc Aparicio, owners of the Penn Cove Brewing Company, honors the memory of a late Coupeville Middle School athlete who fought courageously against brain tumors.

The tourney drew 12 four-player teams and numerous local sponsors, and the Aparicios plan to continue expanding the event each year.

They’d like to emulate a similar golf fundraiser on the South end of Whidbey Island, which went from $4,000 raised in 2013 to $33,000 raised in its most recent incarnation.

Audette Construction nipped defending champs Papa Bear & the Kids to win the team scoring title. Both teams finished at nine under par, but Audette prevailed on a tiebreaker.

Start getting limbered up.

Penn Cove Brewing Company’s second annual golf tournament is right around the corner, and discounted registration is available for the next nine days.

The tourney, which is raising money for the WhidbeyHealth Foundation and its work with cancer patients, is set to tee off Sunday, Aug. 13, at the Whidbey Golf Club in Oak Harbor.

Through July 28 the cost is $100. That covers green fees, lunch, cart rental, prizes and use of the practice facilities.

Wait until the day of the event and you’ll be paying $125.

Tee off to help Bennett!!

Beer and golf are teaming up to help an ailing Coupeville basketball player.

The Penn Cove Tap Room is hosting a golf tourney Aug. 13 at the Gallery Golf Course in Oak Harbor, with the proceeds to benefit Bennett Boyles.

The 11-year-old is in week three of a six-week treatment program as he battles tumors on his brain stem.

The tourney will be a four-person best-ball competition, with the winning group being awarded control over a tap handle at the Tap Room for a year.

Cost is $120 for single players, $220 for doubles and $400 for a foursome. Players need to be signed up by Aug. 5.

The most successful golfer in Coupeville High School history has swung her last club as a Wolf.

CHS senior Christine Fields fired an 86 Thursday at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco and exited her fourth, and final, 1A state tourney with a 6th place finish.

It’s the third time she went Top 10, having finished 8th as a freshman and 5th as a junior. She was 15th as a sophomore.

Fields two-day score of 169 put her right in between two of her training and traveling partners from South Whidbey.

Tarra Moore rode a late surge to claim 5th at 168, while Rosie Portillo finished 7th at 170.

Fellow Falcons Kolby Heggenes (176) and Grace Stringer (186) finished 13th and 19th and the Langley links masters finished second in the team competition.

Cascade Conference power King’s repeated as team champs, sparked by Charis Tsai and Hannah Roh finishing 2nd and 3rd.

Elma’s Lauryn Keating rolled to back-to-back titles as well, holding off Tsai by six strokes to win the individual title.

Fields final moments as a high school golfer came on mom Debra’s birthday.
