OHHS seniors cruise in the rain

Through rain and pandemic, the show must go on.

While Coupeville High School opted not to hold its annual senior parade this year, Oak Harbor soldiered on, and local photo whiz kid John Fisken was on hand to snap pics.

No parade for Class of 2020

Everyone loves a parade, but they’ll have to do without one this graduation season in Coupeville.

Normally, the CHS seniors pile into cars and trucks and take a tour of downtown in the buildup to diploma day, but the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic will prevent that this spring.

“The town, in compliance with state and county guidelines, has asked us not to hold any parades to avoid gatherings,” said Coupeville Schools Superintendent Steve King.

“We are doing a modified in-person graduation on the 13th instead.”

Countdown to Diploma Day for CHS seniors

Graduation is different, but not erased.

As Coupeville High School deals with the COVID-19 pandemic, it will honor the 79 members of the Class of 2020 next week, but with some restrictions in place.

Graduation, set to go down in the CHS gym Saturday, June 13, will be limited to family members who live in the graduate’s house.

All who enter the gym for the 5 PM event are required to wear a mask, and the school is providing seniors with commemorative decorated masks.

The school district also asks anyone in a high-risk health category, including those over age 60, to stay home.

Rebecca Robinson, always a winner

Rebecca Robinson has been a high-flying superstar for quite some time now.

So it comes as little surprise that one of Coupeville’s best and brightest is being hailed once again for her scholastic achievements.

Robinson, who graduated from Central Washington University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with a specialization in Marketing Management, didn’t just pick up her diploma.

The former Wolf cheerleader was named a Dean’s Scholar, for finishing in the top 5% of all CWU College of Business grads, while also being honored as the Marketing Student of the Year.

Robinson, who is engaged to fellow CHS Class of 2016 grad Zane Bundy, would like to eventually open her own marketing agency in Ellensburg.

Back in her Coupeville days, the daughter of Salon Blue owner Naomie Welshans was already a high-achieving whirlwind of talent.

In between her time cheering on the CHS football sideline — where she won the team’s Spirit Award as a senior — Robinson acted in numerous plays with the school’s theatre troupe.

A member of the National Honor Society, she volunteered with the International Order of Rainbow Girls, helped with Northwest Harvest food drives, was a team captain for a Relay for Life team, and volunteered as a teacher’s assistant.
