There be boats, big boats, in the waters off Whidbey Island. (John Fisken photos)

It’s not the size of the boat, but the motion in the ocean (that it makes).

The boats, and the onlookers, crowd for position.

Let the guns rip.

The waters off Whidbey were hoppin’ Tuesday afternoon.

A rare parade of tall boats sailed through Admiralty Inlet on their way to the Festival of Sail in Tacoma.

The boats, which regularly plied the waters in these parts in the 19th century, brought out gawkers galore.

One of those onlookers was local paparazzi John Fisken, who brought his camera to the show and was kind enough to pass on the pics seen above.

They’re not prom dresses, but it’s not like I have a lot of dress-related photos sitting around, so this works. (John Fisken photo)

There’s only one sports blog to turn to when it’s time to get serious and discuss … dresses.

Yep, Coupeville Sports, ever on the front-lines of the frock movement.

Prom is bearing down, just a week away it turns out, and if you’re a CHS student in need of clothing for the big night, yet don’t want to spend a ton of your parents money, I have the answer.

My Fairy Godmother provides dresses for a nominal rental fee, and thanks to the tireless efforts of Amy Briscoe, the selection is incredibly deep.

“I try and get another dress in the house and my husband disowns me!,” she laughed while dodging wind and rain at Saturday’s Wolf softball game.

If interested, contact Briscoe at (360) 632-2229 and she’ll set up an appointment.

Thus endeth my PSA.

And, if I see cookies or fudge or some such treat in my mailbox in the future, well, no one ever said I was above taking “bribes.”

If you know something, call or email today.

If the community works together, the little coward who killed a dog in Oak Harbor Monday will be caught and punished.

Let’s not be too gentle here — throwing a dog out of a moving vehicle, leading to that animal being hit by multiple vehicles and having to be euthanized — means you’re a scumbag.

There is no explanation which will change my opinion.

If you disagree, go blow it out your ass and stop reading Coupeville Sports. You won’t be missed.

Personally, I would prefer the guilty party be tossed out of a moving vehicle themselves.

If you are of the 99.9% of the world which is rightfully pissed off at this, please read the info in the picture above.

And, if you know anything, drop a dime.

Whether you do it for the money or because you’re a good person, just do it.

Boasting a 16-student roster, up from 10 in its first year, Coupeville Elementary School’s Combined Robotics team is headed to the First LEGO League Regional Qualifiers Saturday, Dec. 3 in Mount Vernon.

While there the team, comprised of the “Wizard Piggies” and “Brick Vikings,” will compete for a slot in the state competition.

If they do so, it will be the second straight trip to the big dance for CES.

While in Mt. Vernon, the two teams will compete with research projects and on a robotics challenge course centered around the theme “Animal Allies.”

Dr. Sandi Farris of Harmony Veterinary helped the teams identify issues that arise during interaction between humans and animals.

The Wizard Piggies are dealing with the problem of deer and vehicle collisions, while the Vikings looked into the often expensive problems of horse tack.

Both teams worked cooperatively to program LEGO Mindstorm robots to run a tough challenge course, completing as many missions and racking up as many points as possible in the three-minute heats which determine robot rankings and test robot designs under pressure.

At regionals, the students will present their research findings and prototypes to a judges panel, then explain their programming and building decisions.

They’ll also have to work a surprise challenge that tests team communication, cooperation, and self-discipline without coaches or mentors to help them.

This year’s teams (last names included if provided):

Grey Rische wants the shirt off your back.

Well, not really. He’d actually prefer it if you gave him a brand new one.

Rische and other members of Coupeville’s Leo Club are running a clothing drive the first two weeks of Dec. and need your help to make it a success.

They want to collect NEW clothing items such as pants, socks, jackets, etc. and will donate everything to the Holiday House in time for the items to be distributed for Christmas.

Donations can be dropped off at the main office at Coupeville High School (501 S. Main) during school hours.
