(John Fisken photos)

In 2014, Brandon Kelley and Breeanna Messner took home scholarship money. In 2015 it was Aaron Trumbull and Julia Myers. This year it could be you.

Every time the camera clicks, you could get richer.

If everyone does their part.

The way it works is this:

John Fisken, in between shotgunning cases of Diet Coke to keep his trigger finger jittery, can be frequently seen at CHS and CMS athletic contests, various cameras whirring away.

He shoots a variety of action and behind-the-scenes photos, then sends a selection my way to use here on Coupeville Sports.

In return, I post links to where parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles and coaches and the athletes themselves and whomever can buy high-quality copies of Fisken’s images.

Now, anything that appears here on this blog is fair game. That’s how we’ve set it up.

Right click to your heart’s desire and snatch the glossy images up.

Post them on your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or a billion other obscure new apps my brain pan doesn’t want to know about.

Send them to relatives. Use them as screensavers. Print them out and fill the bird cage with them.

Whatever makes you happy.

But take notice. NONE of the pics here on Coupeville Sports have a big copyright “C” marring them. That’s intentional.

Now, when you pop over to where Fisken’s work is up for sale, the place where ALL the photos are, and where they will be available in a HIGHER quality, they do have that copyright “C” smack-dab in the middle.

You post those with the “C” on them, you just look like a cheapskate, frankly.

Either ask me if I have a pristine copy of said photo (if I do, I’ll shoot it to you) or spend the few bucks Fisken charges and get the high-quality stuff.

Either way, you look like less of a dork than you do if there’s a giant “C” marring your pic.

Plus, when you buy photos from Fisken (either straight from the site or by contacting him at johnfisken@comcast.net to set up a personalized order), part of the money goes to college scholarships he gives out at the end of the school year.

This will be the third time he’s graced CHS grads with his kick-back, and the successors to Brandon Kelley, Breeanna Messner, Julia Myers and Aaron Trumbull will see their dollar amount rise in direct correlation to photos sold.

It’s simple. You buy, you help. You don’t, you don’t.

With that being said, it’s also a great time to remind current seniors to get your rear to the counselors office at CHS and pick up the scholarship form, which needs to be back in before spring is done.

To be eligible for Fisken’s scholarship(s), you should have played at least two sports for all four years (consideration is given to students who moved to Coupeville during their high school career), have a 3.0 or better GPA and not be receiving any financial aid for playing sports from a college program.

If you will be getting that sweet, sweet college sports money, congrats, you already won.

For everyone else, you just need to fill out the form, write an essay (the particulars can be found on that form we just mentioned) and, eventually, have a one-on-one interview with the always-chatty Mr. Fisken at a later date.

If you bring a can of Diet Coke with you to that meeting, so much the better, but you didn’t hear that from me.

Wait! I want to buy photos now!! Remind me where to go!!!

Janesah and Janeah Goheen

Janesah and Janeah Goheen

Local runners can help transform a day of mourning into a day of hope and love, building something beautiful in memory of two transcendent young women.

Halloween night of 2013, twin sisters Janeah and Janesah Goheen of Oak Harbor were badly injured in a car accident caused by a driver who was convicted on three counts this week.

The bright, outgoing, musically talented sisters both died from their injuries.

Now, family friend Dena Royal is hoping to turn that tragic day around a bit, by launching a 5K run in Coupeville which will raise funds for a music scholarship which will honor the Goheens and their love of the arts.

The Goheen Twins Memorial 5K Run/Walk will kick off at 10 AM Saturday, Oct. 31.

Entry will be $10 per person, with t-shirts $15 each. Entry forms are expected to be available by Sept. 25.

Money raised from t-shirt sales will go towards education regarding aggressive driving on Whidbey Island.

There will also be prize drawings for those who make extra donations on race day.

The race will start at Coupeville Elementary School, then head out along the paved Kettles Trail before winding its way back.

Finishing times will be provided, but it’s not a competitive race.

Bicycles and dogs (except for service animals) will not be allowed and children under the age of 13 will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

If you’re not able to take part in the race, but would like to donate to the music scholarship, you can send a check to PO Box 1092, Coupeville, WA, 98239.

Make checks payable to Goheen Twins Memorial 5K and write “donation” on the check.

There will be a meeting for volunteers at 6:30 PM this Wednesday, Sept. 23 at Whidbey Isle Yarns (12 Front Street in Coupeville).

For more info and updates on entry forms, pop over to the event’s Facebook page:

Breeanna Messner, back in the day, (Shelli Trumbull photo)

Breeanna Messner, back in the day, workin’ hard for that scholarship money. (Shelli Trumbull photo)

There’s money to be made. Scholarship money.

For the second year, rovin’ photo man John Fisken will be handing out a pair of $250 college scholarships to Coupeville High School student/athletes.

The scholarships are funded by sales of photos that he takes at CHS and CMS games. So, when you buy a photo, you are part of the solution.

Applications can be picked up in the counselor’s office at the high school. The deadline to apply comes in mid-April.

Breeanna Messner and Brandon Kelley took home the inaugural awards last year.

To be eligible, athletes should have played at least two sports for all four years (consideration is given to athletes who didn’t attend CHS all four years) and have a 3.0 or better GPA.

There is no requirement the winners be one boy and girl. Fisken can do that or go with two boys or two girls. Up to him.

Just off the top of my head, names like McKayla Bailey, Madeline Strasburg, Hailey Hammer, Monica Vidoni, Kacie Kiel, Joel Walstad, Matt Shank, Aaron Curtin and Aaron Trumbull jump to mind. And that’s just a start.

Go! Apply! Even if you don’t 100% fit the criteria, Fisken is flexible.

Wow him in the one-on-one interview (and maybe bring him a can of Diet Coke as a subtle bribe…). Knock him out with your essay.

Earn your spot just like you did on the athletic field. You’re all champs, whether I named you or not.

Don’t leave money on the table.

McKayla Bailey, blinded by Bayne’s star power, or just taking a nap? She’ll never tell.

Think about the future.

Thinking about playing more than one sport this school year? Do it.

Thinking about you or your family buying photos taken by Olympic League clicker John Fisken? Do it.

Both choices can benefit you, if you’re a Coupeville High School student/athlete.

Today and in the future.

For the second year, Fisken will be awarding up to two college scholarships to Wolf seniors. And, with the money coming directly from photo sales, local fan and parent support is key.

The scholarships, which went to Breeanna Messner and Brandon Kelley in their inaugural go-round, have been renamed the Olympic League.com Scholar-Athlete Award, to reflect Coupeville bouncing into a new league.

Up to two $250 awards will be handed out. The number of scholarships and dollar amount are directly tied to photo sales.

You can find pics at the league’s website, http://www.olympicleague.com , and links to Fisken’s work are frequently posted here on Coupeville Sports.

To be eligible, Wolf seniors need to have participated in at least two sports for all four years of school.

Exceptions may be granted in cases of injury or for students who came to CHS midway through their high school careers.

Seniors also need to have a cumulative 3.0 GPA or better and submit a 500-word essay on “How Sports Made Me A Better Person.”

Applications are available in the CHS counseling center.

Brandon Kelley

Brandon Kelley

Every time you buy a photo, you send a kid to college.

Sort of.

All school year, travelin’ photo man John Fisken has been snapping pics of Coupeville High School athletes at play, as well as middle school and community athletic events.

Many of these photo shoots have ended up here on Coupeville Sports, since he’s nice enough to donate his pics to me in exchange for me tossing up links to where folks can see more photos and possibly purchase some.

And, just as he has done in Oak Harbor for years, this year Fisken set up a deal where a percentage of the money raised by photo sales would revert back to CHS in the form of scholarships for senior student/athletes.

To be eligible, a student had to play at least two sports for all four years and the inaugural winners, announced Tuesday night at the school’s awards ceremony, were Breeanna Messner and Brandon Kelley.

Messner was a four-sport athlete during her time as a Wolf, playing volleyball, basketball and softball while also cheering during the fall.

She was a team captain and claimed several All-Cascade Conference honors along the way.

Kelley played tennis and ran track, where he was a standout hurdler and member of several CHS relay squads, where he often teamed with younger brother Lathom.

The duo received $325 apiece.

Fisken plans to continue the scholarship, so keep that in mind as you peruse his photos going forward.

The dollars you send his way can come back to help Wolf athletes, including, possibly, your own sons or daughters or nieces or nephews or grandchildren.

Circle of life and all.
