Lauren “Munchkin” Rose: “Fool, if you even think about running on me, I will make your entire family cry!!”

The final score was deceptive.

Though a look at the record book will show the Coupeville High School softball squad fell 2-1 to visiting Klahowya Wednesday, every other part of the game felt like a win.

“We were 100% better of a team then how we played on Monday (in a loss at Chimacum) and I feel like this is one of those losses we can feel good about,” said Wolf coach Deanna Rafferty. “The girls had a great defensive game.”

Wolf hurlers McKayla Bailey (4) and Katrina McGranahan (1) combined to whiff five Eagles, and when the ball was put in play, their defense sparkled.

Lauren Rose, the fireball-flingin’ frosh catcher who will not be run on (ever!) nailed one who dared to test her arm, cracking off “an excellent throw to second base.”

Hailey Hammer was her usual slick-fielding whiz at third, knocking down hard hits and gunning out runners, while Hope “The Surgeon” Lodell and Tiffany Briscoe pulled off sprinting catches in the deepest reaches of the outfield.

“Overall we had a perfect defensive game and I am incredibly proud of how the girl played their defensive game,” Rafferty said.

Both of Klahowya’s runs were hard-earned ones coming off of “legitimate hits,” as the Wolves never shot themselves in the foot with errors.

At the plate, however, Coupeville struggled a bit.

“It’s the same tune,” Rafferty said. “We’re lacking on offense and need to pick it up.”

The Wolves scratched out their solo run off of a single from Bailey, a beautiful sacrifice bunt from Briscoe and a resounding double from Hammer.

Unfortunately, the batters coming up after the senior slugger left Hammer stranded.

The loss dropped the Wolves to 4-8 overall, 3-3 in Olympic League play.

Coupeville travels to Port Townsend Friday (“We are looking forward to going and getting a win”) and has a busy schedule as it heads into May.

A string of rain-outs early in the season put a crimp in the schedule, but most of those games have now been moved to the end of the season.

The restructured final stretch:

May 1 @ Port Townsend (league game)
May 4 Bellevue Christian
May 5 Chimacum (league game)
May 7 @ Klahowya (league game)
May 15 @ South Whidbey
May 18 @ Meridian
May 19 La Conner

Ron Wright

Ron Wright imparts some wisdom.

Coupeville’s big bashers were locked and loaded.

Both Sarah Wright and Veronica Crownover launched thunderous extra-base hits Wednesday, but it wasn’t quite enough to lift their South Central Sox softball squad to a victory.

Playing on a day that saw a rain delay, followed by a rainbow settling over the field, the mix of Central and South Whidbey sluggers were eventually nipped 13-10 by host Oak Harbor.

Trailing late in the game, the Sox turned to their Wolf rock-em-sock-em girls, with Wright lashing an RBI triple, followed by Crownover crunching an RBI double of her own.

That rally sent the Sox ahead, but, after the rain delay, a string of errors allowed Oak Harbor to rally for the win.

“There was a rainbow over the field, but no Skittles in store for the Sox today,” said softball mom Kelly Crownover.

The future of Wolf softball played like champs.

As travelin’ photo man John Fisken clicked away, the Diamond Dusters, a Central Whidbey Little League majors softball squad sponsored by Bailey Dirt Works, pounded the North Whidbey Gold 12-9.

The squad, coached by Ian Somes (with help from Rusty Bailey, Adam Caveness and Ken Martin), has a varied roster.

Some players are in their first year, while a chunk played for last year’s 9-10 District All-Star champs, who were coached by Mimi Johnson.

Headlining the team are four veterans who will move up to the next level after this season — Scout Smith, Marenna Rebischke-Smith, Emma Mathusek and Emma Somes.

McKayla (John Fisken photo)

A week-and-a-half ago, the Coupeville High School softball squad pulled off a weird, wild, walk-off 22-21 victory over Chimacum.

Monday, a combination of poor hitting and worse defense doomed the Wolves, allowing the host Cowboys to garner some revenge with a 15-2 win.

The two teams will settle the matter May 5, when Chimacum comes back to Whidbey for the finale in the three-game series between the Olympic League rivals.

The first meeting was a back-and-forth affair.

Monday’s rematch, which dropped Coupeville to 4-7 overall, 3-2 in league play, was decidedly more one-sided.

Chimacum scored four in the first, four in the second, took a breather with a two-spot in the third, then put the game on ice with a five-run fourth.

The Wolves were unable to answer, striking out eight times — including five in a row at one point — while scratching out just a handful of hits.

“We had little bats on the ball today and it for sure set the tone,” said CHS coach Deanna Rafferty. “Our offense was nowhere near where it was last time we played Chimacum.”

McKayla Bailey, Katrina McGranahan and Hailey Hammer all collected singles, with McGranahan pilfering a stolen base.

Bailey, trying to get something started, had poor luck with the umps, who twice called her out on close plays.

The first time came on an attempted steal of second, with the other a play at the plate.

Wolf hurlers McGranahan and Bailey combined for four strikeouts, but their defense let them down more than once.

“The game today was riddled with errors and incomplete plays made by our defense and the pitching suffered as a result,” Rafferty said. “Once our defense goes down, our pitchers get stressed and it shows.”

Coupeville will look to rebound Wednesday, when Klahowya visits Whidbey.

It’s the middle game during a week in which the Wolves will play all three of their league foes, with a road game at Port Townsend Friday wrapping a busy schedule.

“OK, bye now. I got work to do.”

Madeline Roberts is fillin’ up the stat sheet.

The former Coupeville High School softball star is deep into her freshman year at Shoreline Community College, and among the team leaders in several categories.

Through 22 games (the school’s web site hasn’t added stats for Sunday’s games, which is where these photos came from), Mad Dog is hitting .254 with a home run and 10 RBI.

Roberts has tallied 17 hits, 17 runs, walked seven times and stolen eight bases.

Plus, she’s enough of a camera magnet to get John Fisken to travel down to Shoreline to snap these pics.

So she’s doing alright.
