Color me genuinely shocked.

If you need proof that any team can beat any other team on a given day, look no further than Vashon Island football stunning Port Townsend 27-21 Friday in overtime.

The Pirates, who started the season 0-6, entered that game having been outscored 303-60, while the RedHawks, even after a one-point loss to Klahowya, entertained playoff hopes.

To which I say, no more.

Over here in Coupeville, where we continue to lose football players to injuries at a staggering rate, there was no miracle on the gridiron.

But our other sports are looking pretty good, so life is balanced out.

Wolf volleyball, in particular, is flying high, needing just one win in its final three matches to clinch back-to-back league titles.

Plus, if you add up the varsity (9-2), JV (9-1) and C-Team (3-0) records, the Coupeville spikers are an astonishing 21-3 under the guidance of Cory Whitmore, Chris Smith and Ashley Herndon.

Regular season play wraps up in both volleyball and soccer this coming week, with postseason action for tennis and soccer kicking off.

The Coupeville booters host their playoff opener Oct. 28 in Oak Harbor, while weather issues have jammed both the league tourney and districts into the same week for the netters.

As we head down the stretch run for fall sports, a look at the league standings, through Oct. 22:

Wolf seniors Hunter Downes (3) and Hunter Smith have been a potent pass-and-catch duo.

With help from big play from Jakobi Baumann, CHS tennis has won five of its last six matches.

Wolf volleyball coaches (l to r) Cory Whitmore, Chris Smith and Ashley Herndon have their squad hot on the trail of back-to-back league titles.

The week ahead is … the biggest week ever!!

Well, maybe not, but the schedule does present Coupeville with a chance to make a solid splash in the league standings, and largely at the expense of their top rival.

Wolf volleyball and soccer travel to Klahowya Tuesday and welcome Port Townsend to town Thursday, while CHS football hosts Klahowya Friday.

Sweep both volleyball matches and Coupeville moves within a whisker of clinching its second-straight spiker league title.

Of course, on the flip side, if the Eagles win Tuesday’s soccer match — and they’ve won 26 consecutive league bouts — the booter conference title officially stays in Klahowya for the fourth straight year.

So, win some, lose some. Potentially.

You never know what will happen, though, as last week showed when Chimacum soccer knocked off Port Townsend, earning the Cowboys their first win of the season, followed by a Friday the 13th shocker on the gridiron.

That came courtesy Klahowya, which used a 99-yard pick-six to unseat unbeaten PT 7-6.

So, my best advice — realize just about anything can happen and stay tuned.

It was a good week to be a Wolf.

Plowing into the heart of league play, Coupeville High School varsity teams won five of six contests, with volleyball, football and boys tennis emerging undefeated from the week.

Exiting Sept., the Wolves are a combined 15-12 overall this school year, 8-3 in league play.

Toss in the undefeated JV and C-Team volleyball squads and the numbers get even glossier, with all of Coupeville’s fall teams combining to go 22-12 (a .647 winning percentage) and 12-3.

In the race for varsity supremacy, the Wolves have tightened their annual race with Klahowya, closing the early gap in total team wins to 9-8.

Coupeville edged the Eagles 51-48 during the 2016-2017 school year.

In the 3+ year history of the 1A Olympic League, the schools with the biggest size disparity (Klahowya is the second-biggest 1A school in the state, Coupeville the sixth-smallest) have dominated.

Varsity league wins (2014-2017):

The coming week is huge.

It’s still early in the fall season, but Coupeville High School will have an opportunity to make a substantial move in the standings over the next five days.

Both the Wolf volleyball and soccer squads have match-ups with Klahowya and Port Townsend Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.

Those opening clashes with the Eagles will decide who’s in first place in the Olympic League as we slide into Oct. and go a long way towards setting the tone for both sports.

Coupeville, led by a deep senior class, is chasing back-to-back volleyball crowns, while Wolf soccer would love to be the team to shatter Klahowya’s 23-game league winning streak.

Meanwhile, CHS tennis, two-time defending league champs, hosts Chimacum Wednesday, then travels to Klahowya Friday.

Win both and the Wolves are back in a first-place tie with the Eagles.

Wrapping up the week to come will be the Wolf football squad, which takes a long trek Friday to Vashon Island.

While the trip will be an epic one, it could likely have a pleasant ending, as the Pirates sit at 0-4, having been outscored 206-14 (not a misprint) this season.

We’re a week or two into year four of the 1A Olympic League and one thing remains consistent — it’s still a two-team race.

Klahowya, the biggest of the league’s four schools by far, and Coupeville, its smallest, are the heavyweights.

Port Townsend and Chimacum? With a couple of exceptions, cannon fodder.

Take 10 of the 11 varsity sports Coupeville fields a team in (we skip track, since team records are a moot point) and the win totals from 2014 to spring 2017 are:

Klahowya – 145
Coupeville – 133
Chimacum – 74
Port Townsend – 70

After the Eagles were top dogs the first two years, Coupeville (which has raised its win total each year) took the crown in 2016-2017.

As of end of play Saturday night, the early fall totals have Klahowya clinging to a 4-3 lead on Coupeville, while the other schools have yet to notch a league win.

Counting non-conference games, the Wolves (8-6) and Eagles (8-5) are tied (with Coupeville the only school to have at least one victory in each sport).

Meanwhile Port Townsend (1-9) is taking a major hit in its biggest sport, football, while Chimacum (2-8), is struggling in everything except football.

Current standings through Sept. 17:

Bellevue Christian 0-0 0-3
Klahowya 0-0 0-3
Port Townsend 0-0 0-3
Vashon Island 0-0 0-3
