Well played, Mr. Edwards!! Well played!!

Joey Edwards

He was a tough guy with a soft center.

During his days at Coupeville High School, Joey Edwards took hits with the best of them, whether it was allowing himself to be drilled with a fastball to get a crucial runner on base or cracking a runner coming across the field on the gridiron.

Off the field, the avid biker and car buff could still be seen as a tough guy. But one with a huge smile seen frequently gracing his face.

He came across as a genuinely nice guy, someone who fit in with his teammates and was well liked.

A transfer from South Whidbey midway through his high school days, Edwards became a valued part of Wolf Nation, graduating from the school this past year.

Now he’s off in the Army, serving his country and making his family proud of the young man he has become.

Today he’s far from Whidbey (the military doesn’t give you an off day for your birthday), but those of us back here on The Rock send him our best wishes on his big day.

Keep on keepin’ on, Mr. Edwards.

Loud ‘n proud.

“Ooh, when I get off this bench, I’m coming for you all!!”

Sweetest smile, nastiest elbows in the biz.

Jai’Lysa Hoskins was born to be a cheerleader. Bright, personable, friendly, outgoing, full of spirit, with a laugh that could be heard across the gym.

But she was also a tough-as-nails competitor on the basketball court and track oval.

Blessed with lightning bolt speed, Hoskins helped Coupeville High School’s relay teams blitz to state medal-worthy times.

When it came to hit the hard-court, she laid down the wrath of her elbows on anyone stupid enough to get between her and a rebound.

Jai’Lysa would always pick up her opponents after they hit the ground, but she would make sure they often found that floor first.

You DID NOT try and take the ball away from her.

As the former Wolf great, one of the most joyful of CHS alumni, celebrates her 19th birthday today, we send Jai best wishes and turn to her close friend, Nicole Becker, for a few words on what Miss Hoskins means to her:

Today happens to be my best friend’s, partner in crime, jelly to my toast, milk to my cereal, laces to my shoes, my sister’s birthday.

17 years ago I was blessed to have her come into my life and amazingly today she’s stuck it out with me.

19 years ago you appeared in this world and have changed lives little by little.

Jai, I am so excited for what this year of life has in store for you and I love you ’til death do us part.

You’re my person. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Now let’s have fun!!

Throwback Thursday: Birth of the smile!!

Sylvia Hurlburt (center) is not quite 100% sure about this whole horse thing.

She’s a wee bit more confident these days.

Spreading joy on a trip to Mexico with her church youth group.

Sylvia Hurlburt is a bright, shining star.

Whether operating on the track oval, as a Wolf cheerleader, or as a ballet dancer, the Coupeville High School junior excels at about a billion and a half things.

Plus, she does most of it while sportin’ a mega-watt smile of epic joy.

But there were a few moments, early on, when the smile was just barely beginning to creep out around the edges.

One such sliver of time is depicted in the first photo above, which captures Miss Hurlburt when she was still Lil’ Miss Hurlburt.

You can see the smile coming, but there’s a wee bit of “what was I thinking getting up here in the first place” also on her face.

No worries. The smile won out in the end.

Two Wolf legends were born today, a few years apart.

One, Tony Maggio, patrols the sidelines, guiding the CHS football squad on to gridiron glory, a mischievous grin usually on his face.

Except for that one time when, frustrated by incompetent refs, he just about wore out his baseball cap taking it on and off his head and waving it in frustration.

Eventually the hat sat by itself, alone, in the middle of the field, at which point the blind refs mistook it for an extra player on the field and called a penalty on Coupeville.

Still, Maggio was able to chuckle about the incident later, and he remains one of the most easy-going of coaches. A near-constant presence at CHS sporting events, he meets and greets with the best of them.

Our second Wolf is Mckenzie Meyer, who will be a freshman at CHS in the fall.

Basketball and track are but two of her many talents as Meyer keeps the athletic legacy of her family going strong.

The granddaughter of longtime Videoville/Miriam’s Espresso owner Miriam Meyer (who paid me to goof off for 12+ years, bless her heart!), Mckenzie is following a trail laid down by her aunts and uncles — Jennifer, Mike, Kathryn and Megan.

The first time I saw her play — during her 7th grade basketball season — it took me a moment or two to realize that yes, she was THAT Mckenzie Meyer, since my memories of her were when she was much younger and hangin’ around Videoville.

Now, I realize I’m old and I’ve adjusted to Mckenzie being an athletic superstar and not a lil’ girl getting gumballs from the store machine.

I still want to get paid to goof off, though.

Someone get Miriam on the phone. It’s time to put the store back together!

Anyone, anyone, Bueller, Bueller…

Yeah, well, happy birthday to the M & M twins, while I sit over here in the corner and wait for the phone call.

All hail the birthday boys!!

Some days are just bigger than others.

In terms of Coupeville High School sports, June 26 is the real deal.

Two current Wolf stars, junior-to-be Jared Helmstadter (tennis, basketball, track) and just graduated Wade Schaef (football, baseball) celebrate birthdays today.

Topping the list is the patriarch of one of Coupeville’s legendary sports families — the one, the only, the Santa, Paul Messner.

Daughters Barbi (Messner) Ford, Christi Messner and Aimee (Messner) Bishop have all had their moments in the athletic spotlight, and granddaughter Breeanna Messner was just named as the CHS Female Athlete of the Year to cap her senior season.

Whether you’re celebrating your 17th birthday, or your 67th, it’s a good day to be a Wolf.

Well played, gentlemen. Well played.
