We’ve come for all your PRs! All of them!!

“It was a perfect, beautiful day for some PRs!”

Listening to the words of coach Elizabeth Bitting, the Coupeville High School track and field squad set 68 personal bests Wednesday at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships in Mount Vernon.

Toss in 10 wins and a team title for the Wolf boys, and it was a great day all around for those reppin’ the red and black.

The CHS boys held off La Conner 148.5-126 to claim top team honors, while Mount Vernon Christian (104.5), Orcas Island (73), and Friday Harbor (65) rounded out the field.

On the girls’ side, MVC claimed first with 174.5 points, with La Conner edging Coupeville 132-131. Friday Harbor tallied 51.5, with Orcas sitting at 46.

The Wolves were led by junior Carson Field, who won the 800 and 1600, while also sweeping both boys relay races and both pole vault titles (Carly Burt and Cael Wilson).

Lyla Stuurmans (800), Zane Oldenstadt (Shot Put), Aleera Kent (1600), and Zac Tackett (Discus) also won as CHS kicked off its postseason run.

Next up is the district meet Saturday, May 11 in Coupeville. Finish in the top two there and you qualify for state, which is May 23-25 in Yakima.

Fight for glory, every meet

A teensy-tiny bit of movement.

The Coupeville High School track and field team competed at two meets this past week, closing out the regular season, while retaining its presence on the individual top 10 performance lists.

All five Wolves who were on the chart a week ago are still there, with Lyla Stuurmans appearing twice.

She got bumped down one rung in the 400, as did Katie Marti in the shot put.

Meanwhile, Reese Wilkinson held her spot, but set a PR, lobbing the discus 15 inches further than ever before.

Up next? The Northwest 2B/1B League Championships this Wednesday, May 1 in Mount Vernon.

As the Wolves prep for that meet, with an eye on districts and the state meet after that, a look at where CHS athletes pop up on the top 10 chart for 2B through April 29:

CHS track hits first finish line

One thing is done, another about to begin.

The Coupeville High School track and field team reached the end of the regular season Saturday, competing at the Sunny and 70! Invitational at Lakewood High School.

Vying with 29 other schools, the Wolves won in an event in which they hadn’t previously competed — the steeplechase.

CHS unleashed nine boys and one girl in the event, in which athletes traverse a 2000-meter obstacle course full of barriers and water jumps.

Standing tall at the end was junior Lyla Stuurmans, as “The Franchise” beat her closest rival by 8+ seconds.

Now she and her teammates begin their postseason journey with an appearance at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships next Wednesday, May 1 in Mount Vernon.

The district meet is May 11 in Coupeville, with state set for May 23-25 at Eisenhower High School in Yakima.

CHS grads take it to another level

If it’s the weekend, a former Wolf is likely competing somewhere.

Coupeville High School grads are attending college all across the USA, with a fair amount of them participating in athletics.

From track and field to baseball, here’s what’s gone down the past two days:

 

Taygin Jump:

The Plattsburgh State freshman had herself quite a day Saturday in Canton, New York.

Competing at the St. Lawrence Twilight Invite, Jump finished 2nd in both the javelin (97 feet, one inch) and hammer throw (119-10), while earning 7th in the shot put (29-6.50).

She racked up 14 points across the three events, helping her squad roll to a team title win, as well.

 

Joey Lippo:

A senior at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, he was busy on the baseball diamond Saturday as the Owls split a doubleheader with Vermont State-Lyndon.

In the opener, Lippo singled, cranked an RBI double, walked twice, and scored as UMPI rallied for a 5-4 win.

The nightcap went to Vermont State by a 7-1 score, but the two teams get back at it Sunday for another twin bill.

 

Logan Martin:

The Central Washington University sophomore competed in two events Friday at the Oregon State High Performance Meet in Corvallis.

Martin claimed 10th in the hammer throw (out of 27 competitors) with a throw of 162 feet, 11 inches, while finishing 23rd (out of 37) in the discus with a launch of 133-00.

 

Tate Wyman:

A freshman at Oregon Tech, he was at the same meet as Martin, running both Friday and Saturday.

The first day out Wyman hit the tape in 23.74 seconds in the 200, then came back around the next day to clock a PR of 16.36 in the 110 hurdles.

It’s hammer time for Wolf trio

It was the little rumble before the big battle.

Three Coupeville High School track and field athletes traveled to Snohomish High School Friday to take part in the hammer throw at the Sunny and 70! Invitational.

The remainder of the meet, which has 30 teams signed up, goes down Saturday at Lakewood High School.

Friday it was just about tossin’ the hammer, and CHS had juniors Katie Marti and Mason Butler and senior Erica McGrath in the field.

Marti finished 9th with a throw of 75 feet, three inches, while McGrath was 11th with a chuck of 59-10.

Butler placed 16th among the male competitors at 67-08.

Sophomore Kimberly Beard of King’s and senior Calvin Gutierrez of Mariner won individual titles.
