Rhylin Price and CMS volleyball finally got to play at home Monday, in their third try. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Third time’s the charm.

Nearly three weeks after their first scheduled home match, the Coupeville Middle School volleyball team finally got to play in their own gym against another school.

The original season opener came up empty when Langley never showed, then a second home match — this time against Granite Falls — was bumped due to bus driver issues.

But Monday everything worked, and Northshore Christian Academy arrived ready to rumble with the Wolves.

And while the visitors won both matches, there were still plenty of highlights for Coupeville fans to enjoy.

The biggest came in the final set of the day, when the Wolves top team rode some big serves to a 15-10 win.

Jordaya Dowell got CMS started, smacking several lasers from the line, while Tenley Stuurmans, Haylee Armstrong, and Teagan Calkins also came up big on their serve.

Stuurmans and Dowell also had big hustle plays in the set, with the former diving to the floor and lifting a rapidly-falling ball back up and over the net for a point.

Her teammate delivered the back-breaker to NSA, as Dowell came flying in from the side to drop a perfectly-placed bump between two defenders to stake Coupeville to a lead it wouldn’t lose.

While Coupeville’s Level 1 squad dropped the first two sets, it was competitive with the visitors, who featured a couple of heavy hitters.

Northshore also got a lot of points off of underhand “pooch” serves, while the Wolves, to a player, went overhand each time out, better preparing themselves now for playing at the high school level.

Armstrong, Stuurmans, Dowell, and Heidi Lysene all launched aces on their serve, with Armstrong also connecting on a thunderous spike for a winner.

Calkins, who was lauded by CMS coach Cris Matochi for “really being good at bringing leadership today” also climbed an invisible ladder to the sky before delivering a graceful tip winner.

In the opener, Coupeville’s Level 2 team got strong work from several players.

Capri Anter let fly with a ferocious serve or two, while Willow Leedy-Bonifas bopped a pair of returns which hopped over the net and hit pay-dirt for Wolf points.

The best play in the opening match may have come courtesy the tandem of Stuurmans and Rhylin Price, who teamed up for a beauty.

Successfully holding off match point, Stuurmans went low to make a flawless set, while Price finished off the play with a nicely-angled shot.

For Matochi and fellow CMS volleyball guru Katie Kiel, seeing growth and ever-increasing confidence from their young players trumps the score on the board hanging above the floor.

“The whole team played really well today,” Matochi said. “We saw a lot of improvement, and they are understanding they can win.

“That’s what we want, is for them to show good volleyball skills, to play with solid fundamentals, and have good spirit. And that’s what we saw!”

Chelsea Prescott delivers a kill back in her CHS days. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Another day, another strong performance.

Coupeville grad Chelsea Prescott filled up the stat sheet Saturday at the RIT Volleyball Invitational in Rochester, New York, though it wasn’t enough to save her team.

Medaille College fell in straight-sets to two high-flying teams, dropping to 4-13 on the season.

The Mavericks lost 25-20, 25-16, 25-15 to Nazareth College, and 25-16, 25-12, 25-21 to the tourney host, the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Prescott finished the day with 12 kills, 11 digs, two service aces, two block assists, and 15 points.

The former Wolf star led Medaille in kills, aces, and points in the opener against Nazareth.

On the season, Prescott has started all 17 matches, rolling up 89 kills, 127 digs, 17 aces, 10 assists, two solo blocks, eight block assists, and 112 points.

Medaille returns to action this coming Wednesday, Oct. 20, when it travels to play the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.

The Mavericks have four regular-season matches left on their schedule.

With 10 more kills Thursday, Jill Prince moved into first place in that stat category for Coupeville. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

It was two matches in one.

Sets one and four were blowouts Thursday, sets two and three intense battles, but in the end it all went the way the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad wanted.

Rallying back strongly after a brief letdown, the Wolves knocked off visiting Darrington 25-16 25-23, 22-25, 25-10 in coach Cory Whitmore’s 90th match at the helm of the program.

The win lifts Coupeville to 8-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League action, 8-3 overall, and keeps it a game back of two-time defending state champ La Conner, which sits at 9-0, 12-0.

The Wolves and the Braves play the second of their two regular-season matches next Tuesday, Oct. 19 in Coupeville.

Thursday’s tango with Darrington, which entered play in fourth-place in the seven-school NWL, started off heavily in favor of the Wolves.

Team captain Maddie Georges ran off four straight points on her serve to open things, and CHS never trailed in the opening set.

Darrington did briefly knot things up at 5-5, but then freshman Lyla Stuurmans used her springy legs to climb to the heavens for a gorgeous tip winner, and sanity was restored.

Olivia Schaffeld, who had a very-strong evening, kept Darrington at bay with some crisp serves, while Stuurmans came back around to smash a winner off a sensational one-handed save by Alita Blouin.

Toss in Jill Prince and Grey Peabody stalking the net, Savina Wells unleashing bolts of lightning while serving, and Blouin crafting an extensive personal highlight reel, and things were poppin’ for the Wolves.

Her one-armed save was a crowd-pleaser, but Blouin’s best shot came when she slid across the floor, flicking a return upwards a moment before the ball skidded away.

Not only did she put the ball back into play, it plopped over the net, then evaded several Darrington players, giving Coupeville an unexpected point.

Ryanne Knoblich closed the first set with an explosive kill which drew a nod of approval from big bro Gavin, and Coupeville was on the move.

But Darrington had grit to spare, and bore down big-time in the next two sets.

The second frame featured 17 ties, the final one at 22-22, with Coupeville rallying from behind in the final moments to pull out the win.

Trailing 20-18, Georges flipped a ball sideways while hovering in the air, surprising the Loggers, who were expecting her to set the ball for one of Coupeville’s big hitters.

Unable to adjust, the Darrington spikers could only watch in silent frustration as the ball dropped in for a winner, sparking the comeback.

Maddie Georges doled out 28 assists on her home floor.

Wells and Schaffeld followed up George’s dynamite play with one of their own, combining to stuff a Logger kill, and it was looking like a straight-sets sweep was on the menu.

Not so fast, however.

Cue a third set which had just eight ties, with CHS seemingly in control, until the end.

Schaffeld and Stuurmans were painting the backline with kills, while Taygin Jump chipped in with a nice run on serve, but Darrington found a bit of a miracle to keep things interesting.

Down 21-17 after Wells let loose with a wicked slicer from the left side, the Loggers suddenly surged, closing the set on an 8-1 run.

While Darrington celebrated, Coupeville got right back down to business.

The Wolves could have deflated or pulled back within themselves after unexpectedly dropping the set.

Instead, they rolled.

Jump went off again at the service stripe, while Prince was everywhere, punishing the ball and the Loggers in equal measure as Coupeville blew out to a 15-5 lead and never slowed down.

The match ended with Schaffeld — who has had a huge impact for the Wolves during her sophomore season — raining down nasty serves, and Prince and Peabody working together for one final big block.

Watching his team bounce back so strongly pleased Coupeville coach Cory Whitmore.

“It was exciting to see us dig out of a couple slumps,” he said. “We responded really well after timeouts and between sets. That was excellent.

“We had a lot of energy and, when we needed it, we were able to build it back up.”

While he praised his entire team, Whitmore gave a special shout-out to Schaffeld and Prince, who have stepped up to become ultra-dependable players.

Jill is a cerebral player who is really beginning to tap into her physical side, while Liv has always been a physical player who is really paying attention to the details now, settling in to hit her spots.”

Katie Marti delivered another solid all-around performance Thursday. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Ball meets fist. Game over.

Showcasing their power Thursday, both at the net and at the service line, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball spikers chopped down visiting Darrington with ease.

The Wolves rolled to a convincing 25-13, 25-8, 25-10 win on their home floor, rising to 8-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play.

Now 9-2 overall, best record of any CHS fall sports team, the JV crew is off until an all-Island rumble next Monday, Oct. 18 at South Whidbey.

Coupeville only trailed once in Thursday’s match, and that was a brief 1-0 burp to start the second set.

Other than that, the Wolves dominated in every facet of the game, making coach Ashley Menges smile (under her mask).

CHS seized control early in the opening set, thanks to a thunderous winner delivered by Grey Peabody and a soaring tip by Mia Farris which split the Logger defense.

Issabel Johnson, Gwen Gustafson, and Taylor Brotemarkle were nearly flawless at the service stripe, spinning the ball, then lashing lasers.

The biggest blow came off the fingertips of Katie Marti, however, as she blew an ace right down the middle of the court at one point, the ball leaving a divot in the floor as it tore by the Loggers.

Madison McMillan cracked a winner to close the set with a bang, then came back around to rip off her own string of sweet serves in set #2.

When Darrington did get the ball into play, the Wolf heavy hitters soon brought an end to things.

Whether it was Aby Wood pasting a winner while elevating on the right side of the floor, or Farris slicing off kneecaps with a wicked kill, the joy was spread around amongst the Coupeville mighty mashers.

Gwen Gustafson and Co. brought the power all night long.

Brotemarkle, who was an assassin on her serve all night, unleashed an especially-wicked ace as the second set closed, with teammate Jada Heaton notching the 25th point with a note-perfect tip.

While the match was decided after two sets, the teams played a quick third set for practice, with Coupeville pulling away after a close start.

Up 6-0 to start the final frame, the Wolves took a brief nap, then roused themselves when their lead was sliced back to 10-8.

Lifting her team on her back, Brotemarkle went on a run of six-straight points on her serve, before McMillan and Johnson closed things out with their own barrage of aces.

Wood and Heaton delivered crackin’ kills, with Johnson ending the match in the most appropriate way possible, by whistling an ace past a Logger defense which was both bent and broken by that point.

Thursday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 1 kill, 3 assists, 8 aces
Mia Farris — 4 kills, 2 digs, 1 assist
Gwen Gustafson — 4 aces
Jada Heaton — 2 kills
Issabel Johnson — 5 aces
Katie Marti — 2 kills, 8 assists, 4 aces
Madison McMillan — 3 kills, 6 digs, 6 aces
Grey Peabody — 2 kills
Aby Wood — 3 kills
