Summer soccer tourney returns

The booters are back.

After being knocked down by the pandemic, the North Whidbey Soccer Club’s annual Rock On! 3 v 3 tournament lives again this summer.

The popular event, which ran for 12 years prior to the Covid-19 shutdowns, is set for May 27-28 this year.

The tourney is open to players from age seven and up, with teams from on and off Whidbey joining.

Cost is $150 for a youth team and $175 for an adult team.

Youth teams play to the oldest player’s age group, while co-ed teams play in the boys’ division.

Trios don’t need a coach, but youth teams need an adult willing to “be in charge.”

Registration deadline is May 12.

Pitch stars try new game

Ava Mitten joined Martin on the pitch.

Pitch action was on tap Saturday, but with a twist.

Taking a break from regular games, the three Northwest 2B/1B League schools currently playing girls soccer gathered in Mount Vernon for a 3 v 3 tourney.

Splitting his available players into two teams, Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson had a chance to see his players prosper in a different environment.

“A decent day. Back to more typical soccer weather,” he said. “It was a good day to get everyone some time out on the field.”

Both of Coupeville’s teams split a pair of games in group play, then advanced to face each other in the knockout round.

After the “red” team won the inter-team tussle, the winning Wolves faced off with top-seeded Mount Vernon Christian in the semifinals.

While CHS fell 5-2 in that game, “they gave MVC a competitive game,” Nelson said.

Coupeville’s “red” team consisted of Lily Leedy, Ava Mitten, Sophie Martin, Audrianna Shaw, and Camryn Clark.

The Wolves (1-1 on the season) return to regular game play next week, traveling back to Mount Vernon Wednesday, April 28 to face off with the Hurricanes, who sit atop the NWL standings.

It’s the hoops life for us!!

So, more than a few teams showed up, is what they’re saying.

No rest for the basketball mom.

Mere seconds after returning from a four-day trip to Ocean Shores, where she helped CHS coaches David and Amy King at a summer hoops camp, Sherry Roberts was right back behind the wheel.

This time, she trucked official daughter Lindsey, as well as “adopted” daughters Kailey Kellner, Ema Smith and Avalon Renninger to Spokane.

The quartet invaded the blazing heatscape of Eastern Washington to play at Hoopfest, the largest outdoor three-on-three basketball tourney “on the Earth.”

Playing as the C-Town Hoopers, the Wolves stormed back Sunday to win the consolation bracket in their division.

After opening with narrow losses to LAWPI (14-13) and Bouncer’s (14-8), Coupeville’s best drilled the Trailer Park Girls (18-7) and the Bounty Hunters (11-3).

And they weren’t the only players with a Coupeville connection, as 1991 CHS grad Sean Dillon brought his three-point shooting skills and family to the event.

Playing as Chillin Like Dillons, that squad featured Sean’s wife Becca, son Ethan and Dalton Palkovitz.

By the time things were done, Sherry Roberts had fetched drinks and food, held phones, chauffeured, hollered and screamed to support her girls and snapped a ton of pics.

“Heat was BRUTAL; so were the roads they played on,” she said. “But Hoopfest was a blast.”

They took the heat and dished it back out.

Fleeing Whidbey Island during a hectic weekend when arts and crafts festivals, barbecues, hydroplane races and car shows clogged everything in sight, a group of Coupeville athletes took to the scorching-hot mainland.

Once there, the Wolves put in work at basketball and soccer tourneys, with several of them coming back home bearing championship glory.

Four young Coupeville hoopsters — Izzy Wells, Kylie Van Velkinburgh, Ja’Kenya Hoskins and Audrianna Shaw — ended up in Arlington, playing in 90+ degree weather at an outdoor 3 v 3 showdown.

While they didn’t win any trophies, the Wolf stars of the future acquitted themselves nicely and earned their shaved ice treats.

“Those four are good athletes,” said coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh. “Girls played hard and gained valuable experience.”

Meanwhile, off in Bellingham, three Coupeville booters, playing on two separate teams, all won titles at the Phillips 66 Rimland Challenge.

CMS 8th grader Matthew Kelley and his Northwest United FC squad romped to four straight wins, outscoring their foes 14-3 en route to winning the BU15 COPA flight.

Kelley punched in a pair of goals and dealt out three assists as he added to his stash of soccer awards from a busy summer schedule.

Sisters Mia and Kalia Littlejohn, who will be a junior and sophomore at CHS respectively, were just as successful.

Rampaging across the turf, the duo helped spark Northwest United G’00 Black to a championship win in GU17-19.

They and their select teammates won four of five over the course of the weekend, avenging their lone loss in the championship tilt.

Northwest United nipped Blackhills FC in penalty kicks after battling to a 1-1 tie through regulation and overtime.
