“That’s my baby girl!!”

The Cascade Conference spoke. Then Makana Stone overruled them.

When All-Conference teams were announced for track and field, Stone was the lone Wolf to make the squad, being tabbed as a Second-Team pick in the 400.

Which is nice, but the speedy sophomore then went out and beat the girl who was ranked ahead of her in the biggest race of the season.

Anna Parker of King’s earned First-Team All-Conference honors for the regular season, but Stone bested her in Cheney at the 1A state meet, finishing second to Maya Jackson of Northwest.

Parker coasted across the line in third, more than a second off of Stone.

Jumping sports, let’s just say … game, set, match, Miss Stone.

another birdie for me!!"

“First Team All-Conference, baby!!”

Was there any doubt?

After crushing foes left and right in the regular season, then romping to a 5th place finish at the 1A state girls’ golf tournament, Coupeville High School junior Christine Fields was a lock to notch another All-Conference honor.

And so it came to pass, as Cascade Conference coaches tabbed her as a First Team selection, where she joined a pair of duffers apiece from King’s and South Whidbey.

Cedarcrest was the only 2A school to have a First Team pick, as 1A schools grabbed five of the six slots.

Fields was joined on the First Team by Rosie Portillo and Tara Moore of South Whidbey, Hannah Roh and Charis Tsai of King’s and Amanda Fairbanks of Cedarcrest.

Simonette Sanchez of King’s was picked as the coach of the year.

Two sophomores led the team in scoring, but it was a plucky senior who was at the center of things.

Sean Donley was the heart and grit of the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad, and he capped his final season as a Wolf by being honored as the Player of the Year at a team banquet Wednesday.

Donley also was named a Second-Team All-Conference midfielder by Cascade Conference coaches, an honor he shared with senior defender Brett Arnold and sophomore scoring sensation Abraham Leyva.

Leyva, who rained down a team-high 11 goals in his first season with CHS, was named the team’s Rookie of the Year. Arnold won Most Inspirational and junior Aaron Wright took home Most Improved.

JV awards went to Ryan Freeman (Player of the Year), Josh Datin (Most Inspirational) and Jeremiah Pace (Most Improved).
