Spikers honored by league coaches

Call ’em the fab four.

Or fab five, because that works too.

Northwest 2B/1B League volleyball coaches doled out awards recently, with four Coupeville High School spikers (and their coach) honored for a season which saw them return to state.

Junior power hitter Mia Farris and senior middle blocker Grey Peabody notched First-Team All-conference honors, while junior sniper Lyla Stuurmans was tabbed for the Second-Team.

Junior setter Katie Marti, who racked up 500+ assists for a Wolf team which went 12-7, earned Honorable Mention status.

Rounding out the Coupeville honorees was the man with the plan, as Cory Whitmore was named Coach of the Year after crafting the end of La Conner’s 12+ year run as an undefeated league juggernaut.

Orcas Island, which replaced the Braves as NWL champs, got the MVP, with senior Bethany Carter blasting her way to the award.

The Vikings also received the team sportsmanship trophy.

Hoops coaches honor Mad Dog

She made the Wolves go.

Senior point guard Maddie Georges was the primary ballhandler, and a deadly shooter, for the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad.

Also an aggressive, smart defensive player who led the Wolves in drawing offensive charges on rival players, her play drew the attention of Northwest 2B/1B League coaches.

That culminated in a final honor for Georges, who was named as a Second-Team All-Conference player when voting was announced Thursday.

She was the lone Coupeville girl honored, as state tourney heavyweights Mount Vernon Christian (3rd place in 1B) and La Conner (4th in 2B) dominated.

MVC hoops guru Jeff Droog was tabbed as Coach of the Year, while La Conner senior Josie Harper, who knocked down a hair under 19 points a night, earned MVP status.

Concrete and Darrington shared the Team Sportsmanship Award.

Wolf booters notch All-Conference honors

Four for the score.

The Northwest 2B/1B League released All-Conference soccer teams Monday night, with a quartet of Coupeville High School boys earning honors.

Senior forward Aidan Wilson, who led the Wolves in scoring, was tabbed as a First-Team selection, while senior defender Grant Steller landed on the Second-Team roster.

CHS also had a pair of underclassmen notch Honorable Mention status, with junior goaltender Nick Guay and junior midfielder Cole White getting their names called.

Orcas Island senior midfielder Tommy Anderson-Cleveland was named league MVP, with Friday Harbor’s Brett Paul claiming Coach of the Year after leading the Wolverines to a state title.

The Team Sportsmanship Award went to Orcas Island.

League champs dominate All-Conference squads

The Izzinator was a dominator.

Coupeville High School senior pitcher Izzy Wells capped her prep softball career by being tabbed as the Northwest 2B/1B League MVP.

Unhittable while chucking BB’s, and owner of a booming bat when camped out at the plate, she led the Wolves to an 8-0 mark in conference action, 16-3 overall.

Coupeville, despite losing a season-and-a-half to Covid, finished 43-13 during the Age of Izzy.

Wells wasn’t the only Wolf honored by NWL coaches, as the league champs landed six players on All-Conference teams.

Senior Audrianna Shaw joins freshmen Mia Farris and Madison McMillan in collecting First-Team honors.

Making the Second-Team list were freshman Taylor Brotemarkle and junior twin titans Maya and Allie Lucero.

Wolf head man Kevin McGranahan was tabbed as NWL Coach of the Year as well.

Wolf baseball dominates All-League honors

We’ll take all your top awards. All of them, I said!

Coming off of a league title winning season, the Coupeville High School baseball squad finished strong in All-Conference voting.

Senior pitcher/outfielder Hawthorne Wolfe shared Northwest 2B/1B League MVP honors with Mount Vernon Christian hurler Alec Flury, while CHS head man Will Thayer was tabbed Coach of the Year by his colleagues.

Coupeville, which went 11-1 in league play, 13-7 overall, also landed four players on the All-League team.

Senior pitcher Cody Roberts and junior shortstop Scott Hilborn were First-Team honorees, while senior catcher Xavier Murdy and junior third-baseman Jonathan Valenzuela were Second-Team picks.
