Wolves dominate All-League honors

MVP in the fall, MVP in the spring.

Coupeville’s Scott Hilborn doesn’t play basketball, but he did pretty well in the other seasons.

Coming off a trip to the state tourney, where he pitched the Wolves to their first win at the big dance since 1987, the CHS senior was tabbed for the Northwest 2B/1B League’s top baseball honor.

Hilborn shared MVP status with Mount Vernon Christian junior Nathan Symmank, just as their teams shared the NWL crown with 13-1 league records.

The duo both bounced around the diamond, playing three positions apiece.

Symmank plays first and third base when he’s not pitching, while Hilborn, who was also the league MVP for football, is a pitcher, catcher, and shortstop.

MVC head man John Burmeister was tabbed as Coach of the Year after leading the Hurricanes to a 2nd place finish at the 1B state tourney, while Darrington received the league sportsmanship award.

In addition to Hilborn, Coupeville, which finished 17-6 after splitting two games at state, had six other players honored by league coaches.

Diamond queens nab All-League honors

The future is bright for Coupeville High School softball.

Coming off a strong 14-6 season, seven Wolves were tabbed to All-Conference teams by Northwest 2B/1B League coaches.

Better still, four of those seven, including all three players to land First-Team honors, still have two or more seasons left to play.

Sophomores Madison McMillan (SS) and Mia Farris (OF) were joined by freshman catcher Teagan Calkins in receiving top honors.

Four other Wolves — sophomore Taylor Brotemarkle (2B) and seniors Allie Lucero (P/1B), Gwen Gustafson (3B/OF), and Maya Lucero (P/1B) — were named to the Second Team.

Coupeville’s seven All-League players make for a formidable lineup.

Coach of the Year honors went to a former Wolf assistant coach, with Concrete’s Stephanie Henning honored by her fellow diamond gurus for reviving the Lion program.

“She kept her girls playing all season,” said CHS coach Kevin McGranahan. “Something to be said for her and her coaching.”

Downes, Murdy earn All-League honors

They earned the respect of rival hoops gurus.

Coming off a strong 14-9 season, two Coupeville High School boys’ basketball players were named to the All-Conference team by Northwest 2B/1B League coaches.

Junior Logan Downes, who averaged 23.2 points a night across 10 league contests, with a high of 40 against Orcas Island, was tabbed as a First-Team pick.

The Wolf gunner scored in double digits in every NWL game this season, tossing in 26+ five times against league foes.

Overall, Downes put together the second-best individual season in the 107-year history of CHS basketball, torching the nets for 554 points on his way to averaging 24.1 a game.

After twice scoring 40 in a game as a junior, he’s #15 on the Wolf boys career scoring chart, having splashed home 778 points.

Downes was joined on the 2022-2023 All-League team by senior Alex Murdy, who was tabbed as a Second-Team pick.

Closing his stellar prep career with a bang, Coupeville’s most aggressive defensive player averaged 10.7 points a night in league play, with a high of 17 against La Conner.

Capable of changing the flow of the game on both ends of the floor, Murdy scored 448 points during his time in a Wolf uniform.

Senior Diego Lago, who led Orcas Island to a 6th place finish at the 1B state tourney, was league MVP, while Vikings head man Ed Lago was named Coach of the Year.

Concrete won the Sportsmanship Award.

The Wolves ruled both sides of the ball.

Fresh off winning its first league title in 32 seasons, and just days before opening the state playoffs, the Coupeville High School football team dominated All-League selections.

Northwest 2B/1B League coaches selected CHS seniors Dominic Coffman (offense) and Scott Hilborn (defense) as conference MVPs, while Benett Richter was tabbed as Coach of the Year.

Coupeville finished the regular season 4-0 in NWL play, clinching the program’s first title since 1990, and 7-1 overall.

The Wolves open the 12-team 2B state tourney Saturday in Oak Harbor, when they host Onalaska in a loser-out game.

The winner advances to the state quarterfinals to face Okanogan.

Richter, in his first year as CHS head coach after several seasons as an assistant, offered thanks to everyone involved in the Wolf program.

“Coach of the year was made possible by the hard work of my dedicated and passionate staff and the unbelievable buy in and hard work of the kids who truly do the heavy lifting,” he said.

“Without these guys, I’m just another Joe Schmo with a whistle! Love this team! Love this town!!”

Wolf spikers notch All-League honors

They were honored individually, and as a team.

When Northwest 2B/1B League coaches handed out All-Conference awards, Coupeville High School volleyball players were named six times.

The Wolves shared the league’s Team Sportsmanship honor with Orcas Island, while five CHS spikers were singled out for their play.

Seniors Alita Blouin and Maddie Georges were named First-Team All-League picks, with junior Grey Peabody and senior Ryanne Knoblich landing Second-Team honors.

Jill Prince rounded out the Wolf honorees, earning Honorable Mention for her senior season.

In the year’s biggest non-surprise, La Conner senior Ellie Marble repeated as league MVP, while mom Suzanne Marble was named Coach of the Year in her 30th, and final season, with the Braves.
