Allison Wenzel was in tune with the hoop.

Dropping a season-high 10 points, one for every day she and her teammates had been off, the Wolf sophomore was a bright, shining star for the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball squad Tuesday night.

And, while she and her teammates eventually fell 32-20 at Vashon Island — victim of a fourth-quarter slump — they came away with a lot of positives for playing in their first game in a week and a half.

Now 2-4, the JV will join the Wolf varsity (5-2) in taking another week off (from games, not practice), as they don’t play again until Dec. 30.

That will give the young guns, and coach Amy King, time to work on things, figuring out what clicked against the Pirates and what didn’t.

“Overall, we need to decide we want to play less passive defense and handle the ball with more strength and confidence,” King said. “Tonight we did run a few of our plays very successfully, and had many rebounds.

“We just need to get better at taking care of the ball after we do get it.”

Coupeville stayed close early, trailing just 9-6 after one quarter.

Sarah Wright and Skyler Lawrence dropped in buckets, while Brittany Powers and Ema Smith added a free throw apiece.

Vashon, having some issues with its man-to-man defense, promptly switched to a more-successful zone.

“We found some holes in the man defense that made them switch over and that gave us some trouble,” King said. “They had a few girls playing the guards fairly aggressively, which accounted for a few of their baskets.”

From the second quarter on, it was the Wenzel Experience on full display, as the swing player went off for 10 of Coupeville’s final 14 points.

She tossed in all four of Coupeville’s points in the second, doubled that in the third and topped the night with a fourth quarter bucket.

The Wolves made a run in the third, sparked by another of its swing players, Kyla Briscoe, who brought high energy and aggressive, steal-orientated defense to the floor.

“We made a little run with the help of Kyla and her defense, which caused a little panic in Vashon,” King said. “Our defense picked up, as did our energy overall.

“We moved the ball on offense better and forced some turnovers,” she added. “It was exciting to win that quarter.”

Any hopes of a successful comeback fell apart in the fourth, however, as a lid went on the basket for the Wolves.

While Coupeville pressed matters on the other end of the court, a lack of buckets killed them in the end.

“Our defense worked hard, but just came up short,” King said.

Wenzel snagged four rebounds and a steal to go with her team-high 10 points, while Lawrence (three points, four rebounds, three steals), Smith (three points, two boards) and Wright (two points on “a great drive to the basket” and three caroms) all chipped in to the group effort.

Briscoe and Powers rounded out the scorers with a point apiece, with Powers a whirlwind on defense with a season-high five steals, including one she turned into a breakaway.

Ashlie Shank (five rebounds, two steals) and Maddy Hilkey (four rebounds) sparked the defense, while Lauren Rose and Lindsey Laxton snagged a board apiece.

King also credited Brisa Herrera and Nicole Lester for their “hustle and solid court play,” while praising Laxton for her “nice passes.”

No prisoners.

Putting their pedal through the metal from the opening tip, both of the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squads thrashed visiting Orcas Island Wednesday.

The Wolf varsity did it with long-range bombs from every angle, while the JV squad went lock-down on defense, beatin’ the ever-lovin’ snot out of the Vikings.

Along for the ride was travelin’ photo man John Fisken, who escaped with the photos above.

Wenzel

Up on her toes and ready to attack like a panther, Allison Wenzel shows the form that made her a defensive dynamo last season.

Now we see who wants it most.

The first day of high school basketball kicked off Monday, and when the Coupeville girls’ hoops squad hit the floor, they opened what should be an intriguing season.

The Wolves are the defending 1A Olympic League champs (both the varsity and JV went 9-0 last year), but only return three varsity vets in Makana Stone, Mia Littlejohn and Kailey Kellner.

Stone was a slam-dunk league MVP as a junior, when her 367 points in 22 games was the sixth-best single season performance in program history.

But, after the top three, it’s a wide open battle for positions, as the cream of last year’s JV squad faces off with a talented pack of freshmen.

Toss in a couple of complete newcomers, and every practice will count as Wolf coaches David and Amy King figure out their roster.

As the Wolves stretched and ran, and then stretched and ran some more, travelin’ photo man John Fisken came in from the stormy weather outside and clicked away, snagging us the pics that reside above.

No quit in them.

Missing two of its best players Tuesday, with just seven spikers on call, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad came amazingly close to knocking off a talented foe.

Bellevue Christian eventually escaped with a 25-17, 25-23, 25-19 non-conference win, dropping the Wolves to 3-4, but the host Vikings had to dig deep to pull it off.

“Even without two of our biggest weapons the girls were close to handing BC a major upset,” said CHS coach Heidi Wyman. “The blocking and aggressive jousting/net play was exciting to watch.

“They are starting to get hungry out there; time to eat!”

The young Wolves were playing without Maddy Hilkey, who moved up to cover for a missing starter in the varsity match, and Kameryn St Onge, who was out sick.

In their places, Coupeville got strong work from the rest of its roster.

Sarah Wright “came alive in the third set,” recording five service aces and five kills, while Allison Wenzel “had the play of the night with a massive solo block that had the whole crowd going.”

“She (Wenzel) was consistent all night playing both the middle and opposite positions well,” Wyman said.

Wenzel (three kills) and Kenzi LaRue (four) combined to pick up some of the slack with the big-hitting St Onge being sidelined, while Maggie Crimmins “was on fire in the back row, digging balls that had no business being passed, frustrating the BC hitters.”

Coupeville notched 15 kills and nine aces, with six perfect serving sets.

Crimmins and Wright tallied two apiece, while LaRue and Nicole Lester each had one.

Tonight, we’re going to talk about the JV first.

And why not? It’s the easier story to write, because, if one thing went perfectly Thursday, it was the performance laid down by Coupeville High School’s young volleyball spikers.

Hitting on every cylinder, the Wolf JV routed visiting Chimacum in straight sets, and it got progressively easier the further into the match they went.

The 25-16, 25-14, 25-9 win, the third in the last four matches for the squad, lifted Coupeville to 3-3.

Other than a brief dry spell at the very start of the match, this was one of those nights where everything went in favor of the women wearing red and black.

Battling back from an early mini-deficit, the Wolves claimed the lead for good at 9-8 in the first set on a nice tip for a winner from Kenzi LaRue.

Coupeville took immediate advantage, with Allison Wenzel striding to the service stripe and crushing the first ball she saw for a blistering ace.

Staying hot on serve, the Wolves got aces from LaRue, Ashley Menges and Maddy Hilkey as they began to roll to victory, then really stepped up the assault in the second set.

That was when Sarah Wright went off, reeling off eight straight points on serve at one point.

She got some help, with Kameryn St Onge and Maggie Crimmins each dropping in winners off of perfectly-placed tips.

Coupeville thoroughly controlled play, with Chimacum getting its points mainly off of errors and not off of anything special the Cowboys could come up with.

When the Wolves went for winners, they sent the Cowboys reeling, never more so than when Menges went airborne, virtually scraping the gym ceiling for the prettiest tip of the match.

The third set was a stroll in the park for Coupeville, with St Onge controlling all the action at the net in a performance that earned her a promotion later in the night.

The hard-hitting Wolf sophomore took her killer hops to the night’s second match, where she made her varsity debut in the third set.
