Hanging out with lil’ sis Mattea.

All cheerleaders smile.

Few radiate the warmth that Coupeville High School senior Ashlyn Miller does, however.

Through rain, wind or fog on the football sideline, her spirit never flagged.

Her voice never wavered, her spirit never broke, and, most of all, she sent a genuine sense of happiness out to everyone who surrounded her.

That’s a personality trait that carries over in her non-cheer life, as well.

As part of a dynamic duo with younger sister Mattea, Ashlyn is one of the best and brightest the Wolves have to offer the world.

Alaska’s loss is Coupeville’s gain.

As she celebrates her 18th birthday today, a week away from what I anticipate will be the start of her final high school track season (she was a sprinter/thrower/relay whiz as a junior), here’s best wishes to a truly talented, radiant young woman.

Happy birthday, Miss Miller! Never stop being awesome.

Oscar Liquidano and friends.

Oscar Liquidano and friends.

He couldn’t stay away.

A family move to Vegas threatened to break up the love affair between Oscar Liquidano and Cow Town, but things eventually came back around and Big O was returned to the town he was meant to be in.

His return to Whidbey, in time to join his teammates on the Wolf football squad in the early days of practice, was cause for universal joy.

A big, bad man on the gridiron who anchored the CHS line while also acting as a team captain, Oscar crushed hapless foes while always sporting the biggest smile in all the land.

The dude is that rare combination of a guy who has the imposing build of an enforcer, while being the first one to reach out to others with a smile and a joke.

He’s as rock solid as they come, and it’s great to see him getting the chance to finish his high school career where it started.

Whether competing — a three-sport athlete, he’s brought his power game to basketball and soccer in the past — or showing up for every game with girlfriend Ashlyn Miller to support his classmates, Mr. Liquidano is a class act.

He might have spent a bit of time away from The Rock, but we will always claim his as one of our own.

As he celebrates a birthday today, all the best, man. Good to see you home.

Want to play a game?

Coupeville High School did Friday, as its Homecoming floats all revolved around famous board games.

Clue, Operation, Candyland and Monopoly all got shout-outs as the various classes floated by at halftime, accompanied by a group of royalty headed up by Queen Ashlyn Miller and King Lucas Etzell.

Joining them in snagging sashes and such:

Senior Prince and Princesses — Josh Bayne, Oscar Liquidano, Aaron Wright, Kacie Kiel, Julia Myers and Wynter Thorne.

Junior Prince and Princess — Brenden Gilbert and Jazmine Franklin.

Sophomore Prince and Princess — Mitchell Carroll and Mattea Miller.

Freshman Prince and Princess — Jesse Hester and Abby Parker.

Duke and Duchess — Kyle Nelson and Catherine Berg.

Ashlyn (left) and Mattea, a bit older but still just as devoted to each other.

To appreciate the end of the journey, some times you need to take a moment to look back at where it began.

These days, sisters Ashlyn and Mattea Miller are a senior and sophomore, respectively, at Coupeville High School.

Both are strong athletes (Ashlyn juggles cheer and track while Mattea stays busy with soccer, basketball and track) and superb people who remain very devoted to each other.

In the classic photo above Ashlyn is about to head out the door for her first day in her journey through the school life.

Jump forward a decade-plus and when she heads out the door this Tuesday, it will be to start her final year of high school.

But, one thing remains the same.

Regardless of their ages, their fashion choices or which school they’re attending, the Miller girls can always count on their biggest fan — each other.
