Diamond men dole out awards

The seniors shall lead the way.

Coupeville’s two oldest players brought home hardware Friday night, with Scott Hilborn and Jonathan Valenzuela topping the list as Wolf baseball handed out season-ending awards.

Hilborn was tabbed as the team’s Defensive Player of the Year and was honored for playing all four years, while Valenzuela earned Offensive Player of the Year.

They were joined by junior Cole White (Wolf Pack Leader Award), sophomore Jack Porter (Most Improved), and freshman Chase Anderson (Dirtbag Award) in receiving varsity honors.

JV awards went to Johnny Porter (MVP), Aidyn McDermott (Dirtbag Award), Skylar Sand (Most Improved), and Matthew Gilbert (Wolf Pack Leader Award).

Sluggers swing through awards shindig

It was a season of success.

Playing through brutal “spring” weather until the final week, with a non-conference schedule stuffed full of top-level foes, the Coupeville High School softball squad still went 14-6.

And while the Wolves lose five seniors to graduation, their normal starting lineup featured six players who were sophomores, freshmen, or 8th graders.

While that bodes well for the future, Saturday afternoon was all about hailing what had just been accomplished, as Kevin McGranahan and his assistant coaches honored the 2023 squad.

Sophomore Mia Farris claimed the team’s Offensive MVP award, with senior Gwen Gustafson earning Defensive MVP.

They were joined by sophomore Jada Heaton (Most Improved) and 8th grader Haylee Armstrong (Rookie of the Year).

Gustafson, Allie Lucero, Melanie Navarro, Sofia Peters, and Maya Lucero — a group which stayed together even after losing their freshman season to pandemic restrictions — were also honored with four-year awards.

CHS girls shoot, score on awards night

Another season in the books.

Coupeville High School girls’ basketball put a cap on the 2022-2023 campaign Monday night, gathering for the final awards banquet of the winter season.

The Wolf varsity finished 10-11, including a playoff win over Auburn Adventist Academy, while the JV went 8-8 and showed great promise.

Prior to Monday’s shindig, senior Maddie Georges was honored by Northwest 2B/1B League coaches, tabbed as a Second-Team All-Conference pick.

CHS head coach Megan Richter and assistants Kassie O’Neil, Cherie Smith, Lark Gustafson, and Mia Littlejohn handed out the following awards:

Winter cheer hosts awards shindig

The cheers are still lingering in the Coupeville High School gym.

Basketball season is done, with Wolf athletes having moved outdoors for spring sports, but winter teams are putting a cap on things with awards banquets.

CHS cheer held its season-ending shindig Thursday, with coaches handing out awards, letters, and certificates.

Miley Gerber earned Most Spirited for the winter campaign, with Makenna Jonker-Chambers (Wolf Award), Gracie McFarlin (Most Improved), and Isabella Schooley (Coaches Award) also honored.

Hoops squads dole out honors

No more free throws or rebounds, just praise.

The Coupeville High School boys’ basketball teams capped their seasons Tuesday with an awards banquet, honoring players and managers after successful seasons.

The Wolf varsity went 14-9 and won the two-day Cascade Hoops Classic in Leavenworth during the holidays, while the JV squad closed on a 10-game winning streak during an 11-3 campaign.

Two varsity players — junior Logan Downes and senior Alex Murdy — were previously honored with selections to the Northwest 2B/1B League All-Conference team.

Downes, who torched the nets for 554 points, second-best in the 107-year history of Wolf basketball, was a First-Team selection, while Murdy, a two-way star, landed Second-Team honors.

CHS head coach Brad Sherman and assistants Greg White, Hunter Smith, and Randy Bottorff handed out the following awards:
