High school basketball tipped off Saturday, as the Coupeville High School girls’ hoops squads played in the Sedro-Woolley Jamboree.

Making the trip in addition to the Wolf players, coaches and fans was fast-clicking paparazzi John Fisken, who delivers us the glossy pics found above.

Ja'Kenya Hoskins (John Fisken photo)

It’s getting brutal out there.

But that’s a good thing, when it’s your town’s team that’s inflicting the beat-downs.

Proving the pipeline is sending a flood of talented players in the direction of Coupeville High School, the young Wolves are busy feasting on foes every time they step foot on the hard-court.

Coupeville’s 7th/8th grade SWISH girls’ basketball squad rolled to 7-0 on the season with another pair of lopsided wins Saturday afternoon.

After opening with a 19-9 thumping of Burlington, the Wolves shredded Mount Vernon Christian 31-17.

Chelsea Prescott had the hot hand in the opener, popping for nine, while Izzy Wells scorched the nets for a game-high 14 in the nightcap.

Wells led the Wolves with 16 points over the two games, while Prescott (14) and Anya Leavell (12) both broke double digits as well.

Abby Mulholland, Ja’Kenya Hoskins, Samantha Streitler and Kiara Contreras all chipped in with a bucket apiece.

While they didn’t score, the trio of Kylie Van Velkinburgh, Audrianna Shaw and Adair Dejesus-Ramirez also saw valuable playing time.

Kalia Littlejohn (John Fisken photo)

CHS coach David King hailed sophomore Kalia Littlejohn for the play of the night, on which she made off with a steal, went behind her back on the dribble, then nailed a jumper. (John Fisken photo)

Now the real games begin.

High school hoops semi-officially tipped off Saturday night, as the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad played in a eight-team jamboree at Sedro-Woolley.

The 1A Wolves faced a pair of 2A squads in the host Cubs and Bellingham.

CHS round-ball guru David King returns to the Coaches Corner to assess the jamboree, and look towards the start of the regular season Tuesday night.

Three important things came out of the jamboree.

One, we got out and played against someone else and got our first game nerves out of the way.

Two, we now know what we need to work on to improve.

Three, defensively and offensively, if we execute, good things will happen.

We played nervous, rushed and at times panicked. This led to wild shots, high passes and turnovers.

I’m looking for us to settle down and play our game on Tuesday.

At times we ran our offense, but other times we had three or four players running it and one or two not on the same page.

This is something we have talked about as a team that we need to improve from last year.

We forced some things on our dribble drives. Just need to be smarter with our movement.

As a team, our court awareness and passing to an open teammate needs to improve. We do that and we get in-rhythm shots.

We took some poor shots. And the good shots we did take, just didn’t fall (overshot due to nerves, I believe).

We didn’t block out well and we need to have better communication overall.

We have been implementing a few things defensively this year, the team executed these and it led to some turnovers.

Throughout we did a great job of getting out and running the floor and looking ahead.

When we did have the players on the floor and when they all ran the plays, it was something we can build on to get good looks at the basket.

Hustle? We hustled the whole time on the court.

We also had many offensive rebounds, we just couldn’t get the put-backs in.

In a nutshell, we need to keep improving.

Did we do some things well? Yes. Were we pleased with our play? No.

One thing with this team is the competitive drive they have as players.

I’m looking forward to getting back in the gym on Monday, then seeing how we do against Blaine on Tuesday.

Say hello to the random number generator.

With the start of actual basketball games roaring down on us, here’s a look at some of the Wolves who will be running the hard-court this season.

Not all of them, mind you.

I’m not running upwards of 50 portraits in a single story that stretches across the internet from coast to coast.

So, I took the head shots, which come to us courtesy John Fisken, and dropped them into a random number generator and out popped the four girls and boys who get to hit the internet today.

As the season plays out, I’m sure I’ll use all the CHS hoops stars portraits I have, but, for today, we’re going to eight.

“Old school” and new school, together again.

Now, I’m not really sure we can call someone “old school” if they graduated five months ago.

Call them what you will, but a batch of Wolf boys basketball alumni from the past couple of seasons returned to the CHS gym Wednesday to wage war with the current occupants.

The score remains top secret (at least for now), but John Fisken was on hand to snap pics as the action went down.
