X’s and O’s and snaps.

Coupeville Middle School basketball coaches are in the spotlight on a Friday morning.

Wanderin’ photographer John Fisken moves at his own Diet Coke-fueled rhythm, so you never quite know what you’re going to get from his camera.

This time out, it’s the men (and the woman) who make the CMS hoops program hum.

They shoot, he shoots, everyone scores.

Jaylen Nitta intently watches action unfold.

Alex Evans is back, leading a program he played for back in the day.

Ratcliff directs traffic.

Nitta, a former Wolf player himself, now calls the shots.

He’s still wheelin’ and dealin’ on the hardwood.

Coupeville High School grad Caleb Meyer is in his second season of playing basketball at Skagit Valley College, with the Cardinals off to a perfect start.

SVC sits at 5-0 after shredding Big Bend 90-56 Sunday afternoon.

Next up is a home game Nov. 30 against Douglas College of British Columbia, then a trip to Port Angeles Dec. 2-3 for the Pirate Classic.

Meyer has played in all five games for Skagit, racking up four points, four assists, three steals, a rebound and six tooth-rattling fouls.

During his time in Coupeville, McKenzie’s younger brother helped lead Wolf boys’ basketball to its best season in three decades-plus during his senior campaign.

CHS, a 2B school, went 16-0 during the regular season, stunned 3A Oak Harbor to rule Whidbey, won a league title, and played two games at the state tourney.

Caleb Meyer also earned a 2nd place medal in the 4 x 100 at the state track and field championships.

Are you ready for the sprøytenarkoman video?

If we believe Google Translate, that’s the Norwegian word for hype, and no one lays down the hype quite like Makana Stone.

The Coupeville High School grad, now playing her third season of professional basketball overseas, went off for a game-high 32 points and 13 rebounds in her most recent game for Ammerud.

Now, highlights of that performance can be found on the Instagram account for ShowTimeNorge, which bills itself as “Scandinavia’s biggest basketball entertainment page.”

Let the sprøytenarkoman flow!

Along with playing professional basketball in Norway, Makana Stone also coaches the next generation of hoops stars.

She continues to fire on all cylinders, even if her team does not.

Coupeville grad Makana Stone filled up the stat sheet in a big way Sunday in Norway, but her pro hoops team stumbled in the second half.

The former Wolf ace went off for a game-high 32 points and 13 rebounds, while also pilfering four steals, but Ammerud fell 78-55 to host Asker.

The loss, the third straight for Stone and her associates, drops them to 2-4 on the season.

Ammerud, which returned to action this season after several years of inactivity, sits in fifth place in the six-team Kvinneligaen.

The Queens are off now for the holidays, returning with back-to-back games Dec. 2-3 against Bergen (0-6) and Ulriken (4-1).

Sunday’s clash with Asker was a barn burner during the first half, with the teams going to the break tied 27-27.

Down 18-16 after one quarter of play, Ammerud used an 11-9 surge in the second frame to knot things up.

After the break, though, Asker made its move.

A 24-9 run in the third quarter pushed the lead to 15 points, before the hosts closed things with a 27-19 advantage across the final 10 minutes.

Stone put up a fierce fight, hitting her high in an Ammerud uniform and scoring from every angle.

She knocked down nine regular baskets, drilled the bottom out of the net on a trio of three-balls and went 5-7 at the free throw line.

But the rest of the Ammerud lineup was 9-39 from the floor in the game, with no one else topping seven points.

Stone, who is in her third year of pro ball, has racked up 127 points, 74 rebounds, 21 assists, 18 steals, and six blocks this season.

The American was red-hot, but she could have used a little more help from the locals.

Despite filling up the stat sheet Sunday in Norway, Coupeville grad Makana Stone wasn’t quite able to carry her pro basketball team to a win against her former franchise.

Baerum rode a 27-10 first-quarter explosion to a 67-55 victory over host Ammerud, dropping the Queens to 2-3 on the young season.

The loss came despite Stone throwing down a game-high 25 points, snatching a team-best 14 rebounds, and adding four assists, five steals and a blocked shot to her superb all-around performance.

This was the second time the former Wolf ace squared off with the franchise she played for last season, though she and Ammerud came out on top in that first meeting.

Not quite the same result in the rematch, as Baerum controlled the game from start to finish.

That 27-10 lead after one quarter of play blossomed into a 45-23 margin by the half.

And while Ammerud was able to trim down things a bit in the second half, the Queens struggled from the field, with only Stone and 36-year-old teammate Alexandra Polishchuk topping three points on the day.

Coupeville’s dynamo, now in her third season of pro hoops, has racked up 95 points, 61 rebounds, 21 assists, 14 steals, and six blocks through the first five games.

Ammerud returns to action next Sunday, Nov. 19 when it squares off with Asker (3-3).

After that, Stone and Co. get the holidays off, not playing again until early December.
