“I love America!”

German foreign exchange student Sophie Fürtjes is still settling in to her new home in Coupeville, but the 16-year-old who hails from near Düsseldorf, is already embracing her surroundings.

“It’s way bigger than my country but the people are all so nice that it is easy to get used to it,” Fürtjes said.

“It was kinda what I expected,” she added. “Of course there are a few surprises, but these are just little and that doesn’t really matter to me.”

Fürtjes, who has an older sister, has long wanted to visit the USA. She just didn’t know she would be doing so in this manner.

“I always wanted to go to America or live in America one time but I actually never wanted to be an foreign exchange student,” she said. “But then last year in August I was thinking about what to do after school and because I want to see the world I started the process to be a foreign exchange student.

“And I knew this year will be an experience for my life.”

The year-long trip offers her a chance to “learn the language better, to live in a different culture and, of course, to meet new people and make new friends.”

Landing in a small town on a rock in the middle of the water was a bit unexpected.

“Coupeville was definitely a surprise for me, but I love it,” Fürtjes said. “It reminds me at my home because it’s so small and everybody knows everybody. So it’s easy for me to live here.”

A swimmer and dancer in her homeland, Fürtjes jumped at the chance to join the high school cheer squad.

“I’ve never been a cheerleader before, but I danced for eight years when I was younger, so it’s not totally new for me,” she said. “When I was thinking about doing a sport at school I directly decided to be a cheerleader.

“I missed the dancing so much and now I can do it again,” Fürtjes added. “Also I knew I can do all the other sports in Germany too and I wanted to try something different what I can’t do in my country.

“And I love my cheer team!”

After her American adventure ends, Fürtjes plans to return to school, with plans of becoming a cosmetician.

“I want to be a make-up artist and to work all over the world,” she said. “I’m really interested in makeup and fashion.

“I spend a lot of time trying new makeups and designing new outfits.”

A big Beyoncé fan, Fürtjes enjoys “spending evenings with my friends and just to talk about random things.”

Through it all, she knows that, near or far, she can always turn to those closest to her for support.

“Definitely my family made me to the young woman I am today,” Fürtjes said. “They always supported me in everything I wanted to do.

“I am so thankful for my family that they are always there for me and that they support and love me in everything I do.”

New experiences, new challenges.

That’s what Fanny Deprelle was seeking when she joined the foreign exchange student program.

A year later, she finds herself in small-town America, a world away from her hometown of Brussels in Belgium, and on a soccer pitch for the first time.

Deprelle made her debut Tuesday for the Wolves in a game against Sequim, something she couldn’t have foreseen a short while ago.

“I never played soccer before,” Deprelle said. “I never thought that I would one day play soccer!!

“But I’m very happy to be on the soccer team,” she added. “I chose soccer because it’s a physical sport; it’s the sport I preferred amongst other proposals and also to meet new people.”

At home, she plays tennis, runs track and swims, and Deprelle plans to join the CHS tennis squad in the spring.

The 18-year-old, who has a 14-year-old sister, decided to leave Belgium (for a bit) and find her way in the world.

“I decided to be an exchange student on September 2015,” Deprelle said. “I wanted to move to the US for the experience, to meet new people, to discover another culture and new places and of course, to learn English.”

Like all foreign exchange students, she had no idea where she would be placed, and landing in a small town on a rock in the middle of the water was unexpected.

“It was a real surprise,” Deprelle said. “On the beginning of September I had a real culture shock.

“I come from a city where there are a lot of shops, it’s easy to use transit and I’m very independent in my country,” she added. “Here, Coupeville is a small town and everything is quiet. It’s very different from my country.”

A month-and-a-half into her American tour, she’s begun to adjust, however.

“Even it was difficult on the beginning, I’m happy to be here in Coupeville,” Deprelle said. “People are very friendly due it’s a small town and it’s very relaxing. I met new people as expected.”

When she’s not playing soccer, Deprelle enjoys spending time with friends and her musical tastes run a wide gamut, with Coldplay, Beyoncé and Flume particular favorites.

After her year in Coupeville, she plans to return home, where she will attend college and study law in both French and English.

However the rest of her American adventure plays out, Deprelle is confident her time abroad will help shape her life in a positive way.

“I think it will be this experience. I will come back changed and stronger.”

Destiny Bitting shares at least two things with Beyoncé.

They have the same birthday — Sept. 4 — though the singer is a few years older than the Coupeville High School senior. And also, both are larger-than-life showmen.

Or, more appropriately, show-women.

Destiny has channeled her entertainment energy into the world of cheer-leading and it has paid off nicely.

A Wolf captain this year, she’ll be easy to spot, as she’s usually out front through football and basketball seasons.

Loud ‘n proud, Bitting is a vital part of Wolf Nation, one who has learned to deal with a serious heart condition without letting it slow her down.

She may not get the huge headlines and 24/7 media coverage that her birthday mate does, but Destiny makes an impact on her town every day, through her actions, her words and her sublime grace.

Happy birthday, Miss Bitting.

The rest of the world may spend the day ranting and raving about Beyoncé, but you’re the real superstar here.

Did Beyonce’s world tour come through Coupeville?

At the very least, Coupeville High School tennis practice was put on hold for a bit Wednesday while auditions for a sequel to “Single Ladies” was held.

Don’t hide behind those sunglasses, Wolf coach Ken Stange. Everyone knows you have moves like Swayze.
