They’re being honored, all 74 of them.

Coupeville High School track and field athletes have been tabbed by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association as one of its Team of the Month winners for April.

Each month the WIAA, with the sponsorship of Les Schwab Tire Centers, honors teams, either from athletics or activities, in each of the state’s classifications.

CHS track reps 2B, while fellow Northwest 2B/1B League school Mount Vernon Christian was hailed for its 1B baseball program.

Royal softball (1A), Archbishop Thomas Murphy boys’ golf (2A), Liberty (Issaquah) softball (3A) and Tahoma baseball (4A) round out the April honorees.

The selections are based on “performance, dedication in the classroom, and service to the community.”

Teams receive a trophy and a $100 donation to their program.

How do you replace a living legend?

By staying in-house and handing the reigns to two coaches who have worked closely with the departing guru over the years.

Randy King’s retirement means this spring’s track and field season will be the first one without him at the helm of the Coupeville High School program in almost two decades.

His replacements?

Elizabeth Bitting, who will lead the Wolf girls, and Bob Martin, who will guide the CHS boys.

Their hires, confirmed by Coupeville Athletic Director Willie Smith, will be official after approval from the school board at its next meeting.

Both coaches are putting together their own stellar runs in Cow Town, having led multiple teams.

Bitting has been a Coupeville Middle School track coach, as well as leading both middle school and high school cross country programs.

Martin, whose youngest son Logan is a senior on this year’s CHS team, has coached track, football, and basketball in Coupeville.

Spring sports practice kicks off Monday, Feb. 28, with the first track meet set to go down in La Conner Mar. 17.

Mark your calendars!

The Coupeville Booster Club has three more general meetings scheduled during the 2021-2022 school year, with all open to the public.

This is your chance to see how the sausage is made and offer input on how the boosters can best continue to support athletics at Coupeville High School.

Remember – if you don’t show up, no complaining afterwards.

All three meetings will be in the health room at the CHS gym, which is the first door on your left as you step through the doorway.

Tip-off for each is 6 PM, the meetings go down on Thursdays, and masks are required on school grounds.

Circle the dates on your calendar:

Jan. 20
Mar. 17

They need you!

You, and you, and even you in the back there. All of you.

The Coupeville Booster Club, which provides invaluable support to Wolf athletes, is kicking off its annual membership drive Friday, coinciding with this year’s Homecoming football game.

If you attend said game — 7 PM at Mickey Clark Field, with Cascade (Leavenworth) making the long trek from Eastern Washington to be the foe — there’ll be a booster club tent where you can sign up.

Or, you can get a jump on things and do so from the comfort of your chair, or couch, or wherever you’re currently sprawled as you read this.
