Win for Lincoln Kelley or he’ll have to go rip the computer’s heart out with his bare hands. (John Fisken photo)

Dear Coupeville High School football players,

The computers think you stink.

There’s really no other way to look at it, since that’s what “Debbie,” the diabolical and vehemently anti-Whidbey computer at the heart of ScoreCzar.org is burping out right now.

In her latest rankings, she has the Wolves ranked #52 … out of 53 schools playing 1A football.

That’s right. Debbie thinks you could beat Stevenson, a school that has been outscored 91-7 in its first two games, but just about no one else.

Granted, you are 0-2 on the young season, but you were within two points with six minutes to play in your opening game, and lost to a 2A school that had a line comprised almost entirely of 300-pound beasts last week.

So, I think Debbie is underestimating you here, by a lot.

But this? This is what should really sting.

Coupeville’s opponent this Friday, Chimacum, is also 0-2. Oh, but wait, the Cowboys have actually lost 14 consecutive games covering nearly a two-year period.

And yet, Debbie has them ranked 12 slots higher than you at #40.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?

I know. I know.

Debbie’s handlers can, and will, reel off a list of smooth computery talk about ratios this and slide rules that and it’ll sound almost convincing, but don’t listen.

Just stop and realize the computers say a team that hasn’t won since 2013 is somehow 12 slots better than you.

Then go out and drop-kick Chimacum Friday night.

Do it for yourself. Do it for your teammates. Do it for your town.

Tell our computer overlords that Wolves do not go quietly into that good night. Instead, they live to make Debbie cry sweet, sweet tears of regret.

McKayla (John Fisken photo)

A week-and-a-half ago, the Coupeville High School softball squad pulled off a weird, wild, walk-off 22-21 victory over Chimacum.

Monday, a combination of poor hitting and worse defense doomed the Wolves, allowing the host Cowboys to garner some revenge with a 15-2 win.

The two teams will settle the matter May 5, when Chimacum comes back to Whidbey for the finale in the three-game series between the Olympic League rivals.

The first meeting was a back-and-forth affair.

Monday’s rematch, which dropped Coupeville to 4-7 overall, 3-2 in league play, was decidedly more one-sided.

Chimacum scored four in the first, four in the second, took a breather with a two-spot in the third, then put the game on ice with a five-run fourth.

The Wolves were unable to answer, striking out eight times — including five in a row at one point — while scratching out just a handful of hits.

“We had little bats on the ball today and it for sure set the tone,” said CHS coach Deanna Rafferty. “Our offense was nowhere near where it was last time we played Chimacum.”

McKayla Bailey, Katrina McGranahan and Hailey Hammer all collected singles, with McGranahan pilfering a stolen base.

Bailey, trying to get something started, had poor luck with the umps, who twice called her out on close plays.

The first time came on an attempted steal of second, with the other a play at the plate.

Wolf hurlers McGranahan and Bailey combined for four strikeouts, but their defense let them down more than once.

“The game today was riddled with errors and incomplete plays made by our defense and the pitching suffered as a result,” Rafferty said. “Once our defense goes down, our pitchers get stressed and it shows.”

Coupeville will look to rebound Wednesday, when Klahowya visits Whidbey.

It’s the middle game during a week in which the Wolves will play all three of their league foes, with a road game at Port Townsend Friday wrapping a busy schedule.

The action was hoppin’ on the diamonds.

Both the Coupeville High School softball and baseball squads came away with victories against visiting Chimacum Thursday, putting the Wolves alone atop the Olympic League standings in both sports.

Baseball was off the field fairly quickly, as CJ Smith tossed an 8-0 shutout.

Softball took a bit longer, winning a war of attrition 22-21 when freshman Katrina McGranahan delivered a walk-off two-out three-run double in the bottom of the seventh.

John Fisken was in town for most of the activity, and the photos above are courtesy him.

Chimacum seniors Kiersten Snyder (2) and Makenzie Richey join the festivities.

Julia Myers is wise beyond her years.

In her farewell letter to family, friends, fans and teammates Friday night, the Coupeville High School senior wrote the following:

My advice for upcoming players would be to never take one moment for granted. Go out on the court every day and give it all you can because you never know a true value of a moment until it is a memory.

Having overcome two surgeries to return to the hardwood, Myers was pluck and grit personified.

“Elbows,” like her five fellow seniors, earned every memory.

As they walked off their home court for the final time, 8-0 in league and the first Wolf hoops team to put a championship banner on the gym wall since 2002, there were tears.

There were smiles.

There was a family.

Myers, Monica Vidoni, Hailey Hammer, Kacie Kiel, Wynter Thorne and Madeline Strasburg, like any group of athletes, had good moments together and bad moments.

Every family has its fights, but there is not a one among them who wouldn’t have gone to the mat for her sisters if someone else dared to pick on them.

They endured and they triumphed by being wonderful people on, and off, the court.

They are talented athletes, the best core group the Wolves have had since the glory days of the late ’90s and early 2000’s.

But, like that group, they are also amazing young women in all facets of their lives.

That we got to witness a brief slice of their awesomeness, to share in their struggles and their successes, is a blessing.

It’s not over yet.

One more road game, one more win for league perfection. Then, the playoffs and a date with destiny.

Give ’em the rock and sit back. Enjoy the ride and appreciate what you are seeing.

Six young women who have grown before our eyes from tentative freshmen to confident seniors, while never losing their love of life, or each other.

What’s next?

In the words of Kacie “Killer” Kiel — “Now watch me DUNK IT!!”
