This time they put the hammer down. Again, and again.

Bouncing back from a frustrating loss in which they let a prospective win slip away in the late going, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad delivered a stellar team-wide performance Tuesday night.

Getting something positive from all 10 players, the Wolves thunked host La Conner 25-17, 25-14, 27-25 to get to 5-4 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-8 overall.

Alita Blouin’s young, rapidly improving squad has won five of its last eight contests, with two left on the schedule.

CHS closes with home matches against Forks this Friday, October 23, before Friday Harbor visits Cow Town October 27.

Tuesday’s royal rumble showcased the Wolves at their scrappiest, as they fought from behind several times to polish off the Braves.

Coupeville trailed in the early going of the opening set, finally forcing the first tie at 7-7 before claiming its first lead at 12-11 as Emily Rains peppered her foes with a nasty service winner.

Once the Wolves had the advantage they didn’t give it back, with Cassandra Powers, Addison Jacobson, and Rains connecting on winners at the net, while Olivia Martin and Emma Leavitt got scalding hot at the service stripe.

Set #2 was all Coupeville, all the time, with Leavitt twice going off on torrid runs on her serve, while Scarlett Spencer joined in the ace-ace-in-your-face good times.

Powers was busy flexing and destroying, making the net deeply unfriendly for La Conner, with Sabrina Judnich and Jacobson providing able support.

While the third set was just for practice, with the Wolves already having sealed the win, the two teams went toe-to-toe and pushed the frame to extra time.

Both teams held the lead, but not for long, and there were 10 ties with CHS holding off a set point as it closed with three straight points.

The final go-ahead and winning scores were set up by strong serves from Spencer, who whirled and twirled the ball, then flicked deep bombs, while it was an artful tip from Annabelle Cundiff that provided the night’s final point.

The biggest reaction came when Hannah Roberts sprang off the bench and came in to nail her first service ace of the season, earning a joyous hug from Cundiff and much hootin’ and hollerin’ from her teammates.

Tuesday stats:

Annabelle Cundiff — 1 kill
Addison Jacobson — 1 kill, 1 ace
Sabrina Judnich — 1 kill
Emma Leavitt— 13 assists, 9 aces
Olivia Martin — 1 kill, 9 digs
Cassandra Powers — 10 kills
Emily Rains — 2 kills, 1 dig
Hannah Roberts — 1 ace
Scarlett Spencer — 2 aces

The playoff dream lives for at least another week.

Holding off pesky La Conner 3-2 Tuesday, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad picked up a key road win and kept its postseason chances in play.

With the victory, their third in their last four contests, the Wolf booters get to 5-4-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 6-5-2 overall.

Jasmine Ader’s pitch warriors sit in fourth place in the seven-team league, with the top three advancing to the playoffs.

Mount Vernon Christian (10-0 for 30 points) has clinched the regular season title, while Friday Harbor (7-3 for 21 points) and Lopez Island (6-3-2 for 20 points) currently hold down the other two slots.

Coupeville has 17 points and needs Lopez to lose to La Conner October 27, followed by the Wolves beating Friday Harbor at Mickey Clark Field October 29 to force a tie for third place.

Tuesday’s tilt sent the Wolves up against a La Conner team which “stole” a late 4-4 tie the first time around, so the win was sweet payback.

Sophomore sniper Tamsin Ward, who missed the first meeting while rehabbing an injury, played her third game of the season and netted two goals to spark CHS.

With the offensive burst, she gets to 18 career goals, passing Lindsey Roberts (17) for #4 on the all-time Wolf girls’ soccer scoring chart.

Up next is Genna Wright (20), followed by Kalia Littlejohn (33) and Mia Littlejohn (35).

Coupeville’s other goal came from 8th grader Lucy Schisel, who banged home her team-leading fifth score of the campaign.

The Wolf defense made it stand up, with freshman goaltender Finley Helm denying the Braves on a penalty kick and the back line refusing to buckle in the game’s final moments.

Coming off the win, Coupeville closes regular season play with a non-conference road game October 24 in Port Townsend against East Jefferson before the home finale with Friday Harbor.

“Are you not entertained??” (Julie Wheat photos)

We’re going back in time, to a moment when they were all so young.

OK, they’re still fairly young, but they are veterans of the cheer world now, so there’s that.

The pics above and below, which come to us from the camera of Wolf legend Julie Wheat, take us back a couple of weeks to when 100+ Coupeville Elementary School students participated in a junior cheer performance at halftime of a CHS football game.

The night was a tribute to the memory of Dolly Parton, with the young spirit team stars receiving a thunderous ovation.

They’re getting ready to make their final stand.

The Coupeville High School football team travels to Friday Harbor this Friday for the regular season finale, with their postseason dreams up for grabs.

KO the host Wolverines and Bennett Richter’s squad earns a season split with their Northwest 2B/1B League rivals and forces a mini game tiebreaker for entry to the playoffs.

Don’t, and Friday Harbor is off to the next round.

As the Wolves grind through practices in preparation, here’s a collection of gridiron pics from photographers Jackie Saia, Jacob Lujan, and Julie Wheat.

Chelsi Stevens crushed the softball and earned MVP status while playing in Canada. (Photos courtesy Kristi Stevens)

The Wolves (and Wolverines) were on the prowl in Canada.

Coupeville High School junior Chelsi Stevens spent the weekend in Abbotsford along with her Whatcom Wolverines travel softball squad, competing in the Outlaws Fall Classic.

The only American team in play, Whatcom finished fourth in the 19U division, with their Whidbey import snagging MVP honors in one of the games after crunching a ball to the fence in deepest, darkest center field.

Stevens was a busy bee, playing first base and outfield and moving around in the lineup, including being her team’s leadoff hitter at times.

Plus, along with her time on the field, the CHS student got to enjoy a taste of the Great White North, with ketchup chips, poutine, and Timbits donut holes from Tim Hortons on the menu.

Stevens prepares to thump the softball to kingdom come.
