The finale is coming 24 hours earlier than expected.

Coupeville High School is moving its Senior Night for volleyball from Tuesday, Nov. 5 to Monday, Nov. 4.

The move was made to accommodate Sultan’s potential playoff schedule and ensure the Turks wouldn’t have to pull out of the trip to Cow Town.

“If we kept it on the 5th, there was a potential they were going to have to cancel, and with it being Senior Night, we needed to find a “for sure” night,” said CHS Athletic Director Brad Sherman.

JV is set for 5:00 PM, varsity for 6:30, with festivities before the second match.

Coupeville’s varsity, which is a program-best 11-0 heading into a trip Saturday to Neah Bay, features a team heavy in seniors.

They make sure the scorebook keepers stay busy.

As both Coupeville High School volleyball squads continue to burn through spectacular seasons, the Wolves also keep on filling up the stat sheet.

Which makes sense, as wins and positive numbers sort of go together.

Prepping for a long road trip to Neah Bay this Saturday, the Wolf varsity is a pristine 11-0 on the season, while the JV is a nearly perfect 9-1.

Rockin’, rollin’, and winnin’. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

They’re peaking at just the right time.

Having long ago rebounded from its only loss of the season, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad has now won seven straight.

The latest victim of the Wolves?

Concrete, which fell 25-16, 25-10, 25-17 Thursday night.

With the road victory, Ashley Menges and her kill-happy spikers get to 8-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 9-1 overall.

The JV has three matches left on the schedule, starting with a non-conference trip Saturday to far-off Neah Bay.

After that comes a journey to Orcas Island, and a home finale against Sultan.

As the season has played out, Menges has seen her team gel more and more, with improvement each time the young Wolves take the floor.

That was evident deep on the road in Concrete.

“We did a good job tonight of not letting teams go back and forth with us,” Menges said. “We took leads and kept with them.

“We’ve been working on fine details during practice that we’re trying to implement in games, but tonight was a good start to that.”

The team is getting stronger, but so are the players themselves.

“Lots of really good things from individuals and their own separate goals, which we love to see, especially since some of them have been working really hard on them in recent practices,” Menges said.

“Still time to get better this season, so in these last few games we have, I hope they really take advantage of that.”

Thursday stats:

Capri Anter — 3 kills, 1 dig, 1 ace
Haylee Armstrong — 9 digs
Ari Cunningham — 5 kills, 7 digs, 2 aces
Lexis Drake — 5 kills, 5 aces
Willow Leedy-Bonifas — 4 digs, 5 assists
Adeline Maynes — 1 dig, 12 assists, 10 aces
Isa Mc Fetridge — 1 ace
Chelsi Stevens — 1 kill
Dakota Strong — 3 kills
Sydney Van Dyke — 3 digs

It wasn’t flawless, but they stayed perfect.

Concrete, playing on its Senior Night Thursday, became only the second team to take a set from the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball team this season.

But in the end, the high-flying Wolves were too much for the plucky Lions, rebounding for a 17-25, 25-22, 25-4, 25-12 win to clinch the Northwest 2B/1B League crown.

With the victory, the Wolves get to 9-0 in conference action, 11-0 overall, and the second mark is the best start in CHS volleyball history.

The 2024 net crew, which has three regular season matches left to play, starting with a non-conference rumble Saturday at Neah Bay, breaks a tie with the 2004 Wolves, who started 10-0 and finished 14-3.

Thursday’s match started with a stumble, as a fired-up Concrete squad seized control early.

The Lions are the first NWL team to take a set from Coupeville in regular match play this season, with non-conference foe Okanogan the only other school to ding the Wolves.

CHS, which is a senior-dominated team, pulled together, however, and reasserted its dominance.

“We struggled to focus on remembering ourselves today, but when we did, we played like I would’ve expected,” said Wolf coach Cory Whitmore.

“The first set was full of errors that then became errors in other skills. We definitely need to work on that.”

The Wolves got a big boost from “The Red Dragon,” as junior Teagan Calkins came flying in from the right side to decimate Concrete, pounding away for a team-best 19 kills.

Teagan had a great night and Katie (Marti) got her the ball whenever we needed a point or a string of them,” Whitmore said.

Teagan was very fluid and a good mix of power and precision.”

Madison McMillan, also known as Miss Dependable.

Whitmore also praised the steady play of senior jack of all trades Madison McMillan.

Madison had a great game, especially from the service line,” he said.

“She gamed tonight – she would grab the ball, run back to the line, and had that look in her eye of confidence and a desire to take control of things.”

While the first set was a bump in the road, Whitmore has confidence in his veterans rising to the occasion and working things out on the floor while the storm rages around them.

Once again, they did not fail him.

“They had to find a way to settle in and do it together,” he said. “So, I’m glad that they made enough changes to get it done.”

Thursday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle – 4 digs
Teagan Calkins – 19 kills, 1 ace
Mia Farris – 8 kills, 2 digs, 2 block assists, 1 ace
Jada Heaton – 4 kills, 1 dig, 1 solo block
Katie Marti – 4 digs, 34 assists, 3 aces
Madison McMillan – 5 kills, 8 digs, 2 assists, 8 aces

They ran in the sun and had some fun.

The Coupeville High School cross country squad placed six runners in the top 10 Thursday at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships.

Freshman Mikayla Wagner led the way with a 5th place performance at Mount Vernon Christian, helping the Wolf girls earn 3rd in the team standings behind MVC and Friday Harbor.

The Coupeville boys, who’s top three finished within a span of 1.2 seconds, earned 2nd place, narrowly edged by their hosts in the team standings.

MVC juniors Evangeline Fikkert and Peyton Smith copped the individual crowns on the 5,000-meter course.

Things get increasingly tenser for everyone involved, with the next meet on the schedule the Tri-District meet.

That event, which brings together 21 schools from across Districts 1, 2, and 3, and is the qualifier for the state meet, is set to go down at Ft. Steilacoom in Lakewood Wednesday, Oct. 30.
