The day was hot, while the Wolves were scorching.

It was 89 degrees on the turf in Marysville Tuesday, but the heat never bothered the visiting Coupeville High School boys’ soccer team.

Banging home their first scores of the young season, the Wolves slipped past host Grace Academy 2-1 in a nail biter, raising their record to 1-2.

Coupeville controlled the pace of play most of the way, with their private school foes netting their lone goal off of a penalty kick late in the going.

Other than that, it was all Wolves, all the time.

“We put some changes and plays in action,” said Coupeville coach Jim Kunz. “They came out strong from the beginning. Communication and passing was much better.”

The Wolves kept the Grace goalie jumping all day, with Edmund Wilson finding the back of the net off of a pass from Sawyer Rudat, before picking up the assist on a score by Liam Lawson.

It was the first high school goal for both Wolves, with Wilson becoming the third member of his family to score in a CHS uniform.

His older brothers, Aidan and Cael, finished their prep pitch careers with 13 goals apiece, tying them for 7th best in program history.

Lawson, a freshman whiz kid, is part of a legendary prairie family which includes athletic standouts such as grandpa Dale Sherman, aunt Katie Smith, and mom “Killer” Kassie (Lawson) O’Neil.

The Wolves get back at it Friday, Sept. 19, with a home soccer doubleheader at Mickey Clark Field.

Pitch powerhouse Mount Vernon Christian is the foe, with the girls game at 4:00 PM and the boys kicking off at 6:00. Admission is free.

Defend the crown.

Coming out sharp and focused Tuesday, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad opened defense of its Northwest 2B/1B League title in style.

Rolling to a 25-15, 25-14, 25-21 win over visiting Friday Harbor, the Wolves improved to 2-1 overall, 1-0 in conference action.

While Coupeville went undefeated in league play a year ago, CHS has a new head coach and an almost all-new starting lineup this time around.

But while the names may change, the flow continues.

“We hustled and scrambled really well,” said Wolf coach Scout Smith. “We played with a lot of excitement, but also a lot of composure.”

Everyone chipped in to the effort, with senior Teagan Calkins leading the way on the day she celebrated her 17th birthday.

“The Red Dragon” launched lasers instead of cupcakes, slicing ‘n dicing the Wolverine defense.

Teagan had a great night,” Smith said. “The opposition didn’t have an answer for her once she got rolling.”

Calkins got plenty of help, with junior slammer Haylee Armstrong peppering Friday Harbor at the net, and sophomore Tenley Stuurmans doing a little bit of everything.

Haylee also had a great night,” Smith said. “We have been preaching a lot lately that we need to take care of the ball and she absolutely did that.

“She placed the ball really well and chose great spots to take advantage of the opposition’s defense.”

Stuurmans, who nuked Friday Harbor at the service stripe, ripping off winner after winner, also went cartwheeling into the bench to make a one-handed save, spinning the ball back over the net to catch her rivals flat-footed.

Tuesday’s win kicked off a busy week of action for the Wolves, who will play three days in a row.

Coupeville is headed to Forks at the crack of dawn Wednesday for a non-conference tilt rescheduled from Friday, then hosts Mount Vernon Christian in a key NWL rumble Thursday night.

As she prepared for a day of bouncing on the bus, Smith marinated for a moment in the win, while already looking ahead to the next challenge.

“Overall a good night for our first league matchup,” she said. “Lots of positives and lots of areas we can continue to improve.

“Excited to get back on the court today.”

No JV Tuesday:

With Friday Harbor having to catch a ferry, the varsity played first Tuesday, with the JV match eventually called off.

Tuesday stats:

Capri Anter — 2 digs, 1 ace
Haylee Armstrong — 7 kills, 3 digs
Ari Cunningham — 3 kills, 4 aces
Teagan Calkins — 11 kills, 1 dig, 1 ace
Lexis Drake — 1 ace
Dakota Strong — 2 kills
Tenley Stuurmans — 2 kills, 21 assists, 10 aces

They’ll have to wait a bit.

Friday’s road trip to Granite Falls has been bumped by a day for the Coupeville High School football team.

Now the Wolves and Tigers will clash at 4 PM Saturday, and not 7 PM the night before, as originally planned.

The game pits an 0-2 CHS squad against a 2-0 Granite team which has yet to be scored upon.

The Tigers have opened with 47-0 and 42-0 wins over East Jefferson and Sultan, respectively.

Coupeville fell 25-7 on the road at Annie Wright to open the season, then were nipped 30-19 by Cascade (Leavenworth) in last Friday’s home opener.

The eternal dance begins anew. (Julie Wheat photo)

Youth will have its day.

With only one senior playing soccer at Coupeville High School this fall, both the girls and boys pitch squads have plenty of field time to offer their 8th and 9th graders.

But that also means both Wolf teams are largely comprised of players learning on the job, which means there may be some struggles against veteran-heavy foes.

That was evident Friday and Saturday, respectively, as the CHS girls fell 8-0 in a road trip to La Conner, before their male counterparts were bounced 9-0 at home by defending state champ Orcas Island.

The losses drop the boys to 0-2 on the season, while the girls, who are returning after a two-year absence, slip to 0-3.

Boys play a man down:

A game after having only two subs, the Wolves had none Saturday in their home opener.

In fact, they were actually a man down, with just 10 players in uniform as the team deals with illness and injury.

Orcas pulled one of its players after securing a solid lead, and played even for the remainder of the match, while the Wolves on the pitch never backed down.

“Our goalie, Sam Richards, played strong, making some fantastic saves,” said CHS coach Jim Kunz. “Some shots were too well placed to stop.

“Defense also did very well with veteran player Shiloh Sandlin having a couple shot-stopping slide tackles.”

Facing an Orcas team aiming to make a run at a third state title, the Wolves found few cracks in the defense.

“Our offense struggled to drive the ball to the goal during the first half,” Kunz said.

“But they came out strong in the second half with multiple shot attempts by the Edmunds (Wilson and Kunz).”

Girls hit the road:

Coupeville’s female booters have a home-centric schedule in their return to action, with only one road trip in their first eight games.

That came Friday with the trek to La Conner to square off with a Northwest 2B/1B League rival.

The Wolves last win, which came in the finale of the 2022 season, was against the Braves.

CHS was unable to field a full girls team in either 2023 or 2024, but has revived the program this fall thanks to an influx of young players.

Back to the grind:

Both Wolf squads return to action Tuesday, Sept. 16, with the girls hosting Orcas Island at 4:00 PM, and the boys traveling to Marysville to play Grace Academy.

George Spear flies to the finish line. (Shaloma Allen photos)

The path was packed.

Runners from 46 schools, including Coupeville High School, participated in the 15th annual GearUp Northwest Cross Country Preview Saturday in Bellingham.

Things went down at Civic Stadium, and with so many harriers in attendance, the field was broken down into multiple races.

Coupeville sent 21 runners to the line across nine events, with senior George Spear netting the fastest time of any Wolf.

Sophomore Mikayla Wagner posted the quickest run for the CHS girls, with everyone in red and black bringing a smile to coach Elizabeth Bitting’s face.

“Today went AMAZING!!” she said.

“It is so fun to see how they do and where they place. I now know where we stand and what we have to do.

“Each team is coming along but now is the time to push a little harder and run a little further.”

Coupeville will be back on the course, but a little closer to home, next Saturday, Sept. 20, when it competes at the 46th annual Carl Westling Invitational, hosted by South Whidbey High School.
