If I haven’t said it before, I’ll say it again – the record is kind of deceptive.

The Coupeville High School boys tennis team, which went through the early part of the season without a full varsity roster, is a work in progress.

Which makes it tough when your netters play in the Emerald City League, a cutthroat, private school-dominated conference which has produced most of the 1A state champions in the last decade.

So, while the scrappy public school Wolves are competitive every time out, as they were Tuesday while losing 3-2 to Eastside Prep in Kirkland, they’ve taken a few dings on the ol’ win/loss record this time around.

Coupeville sits at 1-7 in league play, with home matches coming Thursday (University Prep) and Friday (The Bush School).

The first of those opponents is one of the front-runners for the 2019 team state title, while the latter is win-less this season.

Both times CHS played Eastside Prep this season, they fell by the narrowest of margins.

Tuesday the Wolves got wins from Zach Ginnings, sliding up to play singles for the first time this season, and the doubles duo of James Wood and Mason Grove.

Ginnings was the last man on the court, and won his match by coming out on top in a cut-down tiebreaker as the teams raced impending darkness.

Complete Tuesday results:

1st Singles — Drake Borden lost to Amar Kumar 6-1, 6-1

2nd Singles — Zach Ginnings beat Zubin Ooman 6-3, 6-7(6-8), 7-4

1st Doubles — James Wood/Mason Grove beat Steven Pei/Max Goetzman 6-2, 6-4

2nd Doubles — Thane Peterson/Andrew Aparicio lost to Albert Chen/Kaiea Young 6-3, 7-5

3rd Doubles — Miles Davidson/Logan Martin lost 6-3, 6-4

“I must break you.” (Photo property Central Washington University football)

The line got some love.

In a rare move, Central Washington University bucked the football gods, handing out its Offensive Player of the Game award this week not to a quarterback, running back, or receiver, but to the dude holding the line together.

And that man-mountain making the heavens and the Earth tremble, leaving rivals lying in crumpled piles across the field is Coupeville’s own Nick Streubel.

The red-shirt senior was tabbed for the honor for his play Saturday against Western Oregon.

The official, Twitter-approved announcement:

Nick Streubel continues to be dominant at the line of scrimmage opening up running lanes for the RB’s.

A leader on the Offensive Line, the Offensive unit and the team as a whole.

Congrats on being named Offensive Player of the Game!

“The Big Hurt” is wrapping up a stellar gridiron career at CWU, during which time he’s been named an All-League and All-Region pick.

Back in his Coupeville days, Streubel was a three-sport standout, playing football, basketball and track and field.

The only thing dropping from the skies Monday was the occasional lob.

After scattered rain showers postponed their match last week, the Coupeville High School netters were able to make the short trek to South Whidbey, but fell just short of returning with a win.

Sweeping all three doubles matches, the Falcons escaped with a razor-thin 3-2 win, dropping the Wolves to 1-6 in Emerald City League play.

The all-Island rumble kicks off a busy week for Coupeville, which is scheduled to play four times in five days.

The Wolves travel to Kirkland Tuesday to face Eastside Prep, then are home Thursday (University Prep) and Friday (The Bush School).

Complete Monday varsity results:

1st Singles — Drake Borden beat Max Rodriguez 6-3, 6-1

2nd Singles — Mason Grove beat Ian Maddux 6-0, 6-0

1st Doubles — James Wood/Zach Ginnings lost to Ranger Buck/Levi Buck 6-3, 6-1

2nd Doubles — Thane Peterson/Andrew Aparicio lost to Jordan Wu/Ben Roughsedge 6-1, 6-3

3rd Doubles — Miles Davidson/Logan Martin lost to Emmett Layman/Austin Buck 6-4, 6-2

Saturdays are for soccer.

The Coupeville High School girls have run the pitch the past two weekends, offering their best performances of the season.

Along for the ride this past Saturday was paparazzi to the stars John Fisken, who offers up the pics seen above.

They’re young, but dangerous.

The Coupeville High School C-Team volleyball squad continues to tear through opponents.

The Wolves, a scrappy band of freshmen coached by Krimson Rector, are 2-0 in match play, and can now add a strong showing at a tournament in Oak Harbor to their resume.

Playing in a seven-team field Saturday, Coupeville opened by winning five of six sets to capture 1st place in their pool.

The Wolves held off Kent-Meridian 26-24, 22-25, 25-20, then scorched Mount Vernon Christian 25-21, 25-19, 25-9.

“The girls got a lot of good play in,” Rector said.

A lunch break between pool play and entry into the gold bracket cooled the Wolves off a bit, and they fell in their rematch with Kent-Meridian, a large 4A school.

Coupeville walked away with 4th place in the tourney, ready to get back to pounding on opposing squads.

The Wolf C-Team plays twice this coming week, facing South Whidbey at home Tuesday, then traveling Thursday to Granite Falls.

No stats were kept for the Oak Harbor tournament.
