Bouncing through Facebook I go, plucking photos left and right.

Here a grad, there a grad, everywhere a grad.

Coupeville High School’s Class of 2020 may have had a unique ceremony Saturday, thanks to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but, in the end, one thing matters – they’re done.

Off to the real world they go, diploma in hand.

Everyone loves a parade, but they’ll have to do without one this graduation season in Coupeville.

Normally, the CHS seniors pile into cars and trucks and take a tour of downtown in the buildup to diploma day, but the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic will prevent that this spring.

“The town, in compliance with state and county guidelines, has asked us not to hold any parades to avoid gatherings,” said Coupeville Schools Superintendent Steve King.

“We are doing a modified in-person graduation on the 13th instead.”

Graduation is different, but not erased.

As Coupeville High School deals with the COVID-19 pandemic, it will honor the 79 members of the Class of 2020 next week, but with some restrictions in place.

Graduation, set to go down in the CHS gym Saturday, June 13, will be limited to family members who live in the graduate’s house.

All who enter the gym for the 5 PM event are required to wear a mask, and the school is providing seniors with commemorative decorated masks.

The school district also asks anyone in a high-risk health category, including those over age 60, to stay home.

Gone, but not forgotten.

Senior athletes at Coupeville High School, like those all across the state, lost their spring sports seasons when the COVID-19 pandemic shut things down.

Friday night, for 20 minutes and 20 seconds, the Class of 2020 was reminded that their sacrifices are not going unnoticed.

CHS coaches lined the parking lot in front of the elementary school, while keeping proper distance from each other.

Then the lights of the stadium behind them blazed on, lighting up the night from 8:20 to 8:40, as cars drove by amid much honking and some hootin’ and hollerin’.

It was part of a state-wide effort, spurred by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and athletic directors.

Ja’Tarya Hoskins (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

With Washington state schools closed due to the spread of COVID-19, we’re offering all Whidbey Island students a chance to be heard and stay connected.

Ja’Tarya Hoskins, who wrote the following poem, is a senior at Coupeville High School.

Dear COVID-19,

Before you came,
The sun shone a little bit brighter
The air was soft and sweet
The moon congratulated us on a new day
The night was always bright and filled with life

Graduation was drawing close
Seniors got anxious but excited
They had waited their entire life for this one moment
One last season to compete for; one last hurrah

During your vacation,
The sun was clouded with dark clouds
The air was harsh and hostile
The moon insults us with the sorrow of another day
The night grew darker and mysterious filled with anguish

One by one rescissions of senior year
School was forced closed
Spring sports came to a halt
Senior activities were discontinued

After your demolition,
The sun peeked through the clouds
The air was blowing away the fog
The moon broke through the sorrow
The night regained the motion of life

Class of 2020 gathered together
Friends hugged and cried at the mess
The mess that destroyed everything
But everything happened for a reason

Once again, dear COVID-19
But remember
There was a life before you
And there will be a life after you

Signed,
The Class of 2020
