CMS 7th grade coach Randy King is not putting up with any shenanigans today.

They dropped the hammer.

Scoring in big bunches Thursday, both of the Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball squads rolled to blowout wins at Chimacum.

The 8th graders rode a season-high 27 points from gunner Daniel Olson to capture a 71-50 victory, while the 7th graders were brutally efficient on defense en route to a 44-18 romp.

The wins lift the Wolf 7th graders to 5-3 and the 8th graders to 2-6 on the season.

The young guns jumped out to a 13-8 lead after one quarter, then held Chimacum to four or less points in every period after that.

Spreading their offense out between eight players, the 7th graders were led by Hawthorne Wolfe (12 points) and Connor Barton (11), who combined to outscore the Cowboys on their own.

Grady Rickner tossed in six, while Joseph Starr and Xavier Murdy both knocked down four points apiece.

Caleb Meyer (3), Gabe Shaw (2) and Logan Martin (2) rounded out the scoring, while Cody Roberts, Tony Garcia, Logan Wertz and Aiden Burdge also saw floor time for CMS.

When Coupeville’s 8th grade unit took the floor in the nightcap, they matched the 7th grade, grabbing a 13-8 lead after one quarter.

But then they ramped up the offense, big time, raining down 22 in the second and another 23 in the third to put the game on ice.

Olson and Sage Downes took turns raining down pain on the Cowboys, combining for 49 points on the afternoon.

Downes got all 22 of his points in the first three quarters, capped by a 10-point explosion in the third, while Olson scored in every quarter.

After starting with just a quiet bucket in the first, Olson threw down nine in the second, another six in the third, then wrapped things with 10 in the fourth.

Jake Mitten gave the Wolves three players in double digits, banging home 14 in support of his team’s long range gunners, while Ben Smith and Alex Jimenez dropped in four apiece.

With just five of their normal seven players available, the 8th graders called up Roberts, Rickner and Meyer for a quarter apiece to give the starters a brief blow.

The beat-downs keep coming.

Even playing without leading scorer Chelsea Prescott, the Coupeville 7th grade SWISH girls’ basketball squad pounded Mount Vernon 34-13 Saturday.

“We played a great all-around game,” said coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh. “All 10 girls that played, played with enthusiasm.”

Coupeville pressed the entire day, thoroughly frustrating their foes.

“We have a motto. Compete at such a level that we piss the other team off,” Van Velkinburgh said with a laugh. “Mission complete today.”

While everyone chipped in, three Wolves earned special praise from their coach.

Ja’Kenya Hoskins “had a big day. She was everywhere and scored the ball efficiently,” Izzy Wells “stood out” and Kiara Contreras “played solid defense and hit a three.”

No baskets. Ever.

Employing a blistering man-to-man defense Thursday, the Coupeville Middle School 7th grade varsity boys’ basketball squad froze out host Forks.

Holding the Spartans to a measly five points over the game’s first 24 minutes, the Wolves ran away with a 23-16 win in their first game in three weeks.

The victory lifts Randy King’s team to 4-2 on the season, and was the highlight on a day when Forks won two of three games.

Coupeville was nipped 46-38 in the 7th grade JV game while the 8th grade varsity fell 67-25.

Kicking off the second half of its 10-game season, CMS made its longest trek of the year, braving the snow (and alleged twinkly vampires).

The 7th grade varsity was on point from the opening tip.

“Defense. How’s about that 7th grade defense?,” King said. “Gave up one in the first and two in the second. And they were good!

“We didn’t shoot great but the “D” was incredible,” he added. “We are figuring it out!”

After combining for just 18 points in the first three quarters (the Wolves led 13-5), the two squads threw down 21 in the fourth.

Connor Barton paced CMS with 12 points, pouring in buckets in all four quarters.

He scored four in the final quarter, teaming with Hawthorne Wolfe, who knocked down all four of his points down the stretch, to keep Forks at bay.

Grady Rickner swished both of Coupeville’s free throw attempts in the fourth, as well, allowing the Spartans no hopes of launching a comeback.

Xavier Murdy rounded out the Wolf offense, dropping in five on the afternoon, while Caleb Meyer, Cody Roberts and Logan Martin also saw floor time.

7th grade JV nipped:

Coupeville had only six players, making for a lonely bench, but actually got stronger as the game went on.

Toss out a 20-8 Forks run in the first quarter, and the Wolves were the better team over the final three quarters to a 30-26 tune.

Gabe Shaw was a one-man wrecking crew, hammering home 14, while Martin added seven of his 10 in the fourth.

Logan Wertz (5), Roberts (5), Aiden Burdge (4, including a three-ball) and Jonathan Carroll rounded out the roster.

8th grade falls:

A slow start and a rough finish doomed the Wolves.

Jake Mitten banked home 11, while Daniel Olson chipped in with 10 to provide most of Coupeville’s offense.

Alex Jimenez and Dakota Eck each added a bucket, with Sage Downes and Ben Smith providing defense and hustle.
